Low Country Pipe & Cigar Waccamaw

(3.53)
The Waccamaw River meanders through the eastern Carolinas, part of the Pee Dee River basin, a region intertwined with the history of tobacco for three centuries. What finer homage to this heritage than a rich, hearty Virginia flake? Bright leaf serving as the base is typical of the tobaccos grown in this region, while beautiful red Virginias lend it sweetness and structure. Perique and a dash of exotic Izmir leaf complete this complex, satisfying flake.
Notes: Named for the Native American tribe and part of the Pee Dee River Basin, the Waccamaw River begins in North Carolina and flows southwest into South Carolina before entering Winyah Bay near Georgetown. It offers extensive wetlands for local wildlife and has become an iconic symbol for Horry County, where Smokingpipes and Low Country Pipe and Cigar are located.

The red and bright Virginias provide a fair amount of tangy dark fruit, earth, wood, bread, sugar, mild tart and tangy citrus, grass, floralness, vegetation, light sour lemon, and a pinch of spice. The red Va. almost dominates the bright Virginia, which provides a little evenness to the overall Virginia taste. The earthy, woody perique has as much plums, figs and raisins as it has pepper as a supporting player. The dry, lightly buttery and more sour, smoky, woody, floral, spicy, herbal Izmir is right behind the perique in terms of effect. The strength is medium. The taste is a couple of notches past that mark. The nic-hit is almost medium. No chance of bite, harshness, or dullness. Has a few small rough notes. It's a broken flake that burns slowly, cool, clean and even, requiring fewer relights than many other blends of this cut do. Has a fruity, spicy, floral, mildly sour flavor. Leaves little dampness in the bowl. Has a lightly lingering, pleasant after taste. The room note is stronger. Not an all day smoke, but it’s repeatable. Three stars.

The Izmar leaf was readily detected at the match and I liked it a lot. But, since Izmar is one of the heavier Orientals it can overwhelm at times and it did with Waccamaw. The descriptive says Waccamaw contains "a dash of Izmar." Well, it was a big dash.

The flake crumbled up easily when rubbed and burned very easily and evenly throughout the smoke. It may be awhile before I try a second bowl but for those who enjoy regular wallops of Oriental leaf, this one is sure to please.

Nicely prepared flakes of yellow to dark brown that were too moist right from the tin but quickly dried and without rubout, lit easily and didn't require relights. No bite or condesation and a cool smoke. I missed the expected Va sweetness and the Perique + Izmir were dominant thruout the smoke. For this reason, I wouldn't chose to smoke this regularly or as an all day blend. However, it's a interesting change of pace and if you enjoy those tobaccos, you should give it a try.

A friend recommended this to me after hearing my preference for a little Turkish/oriental with my Vas and VaPers. The tin I was working with was a little over two years old. I took a gamble on this blend because I knew it was made for the fine folks at C&D for the equally fine folks at SmokingPipes.com. I have to say, I was pleasantly surprised.

The flakes are typical C&D; not uniform like MacBaren, slightly separated and in various sizes. I would recommend a little bit of dry time before packing but it doesn’t need too much. They were mostly dark brown with flecks of lighter areas. The tin note was nothing to write home about but just good ole fashioned tobacco smell.

I don’t know the ratio of Perique to the Va and oriental, but I would imagine it’s a decent amount. This blend in my pipes seems to display a great dynamic between the sweet and earthy Vas and the dusty fragrant orientals. Both of these work well with the spicy pepper notes from the dominant condimental tobacco.

I’ve smoked this in several pipes but I found that a wider bowl lets the components expand their flavors more while small conical bowls tend to just taste spicy and salty. I’m usually a fold and stuffer but I recommend rubbing this blend out to get maximum flavor profiles.

Despite only being two years old, there was a lot of plume on the flakes and it tasted very well. I can only imagine what another 5 years or so would do to mellow out the spice and enhance the VA. Almost a four star blend but I think 3.5 would be my actual score if possible. If you like Regents Flake but want a little more kick, this is the blend to try.

Nice Vaper with a Izmir kick to it. Flakes are nice and juicy and rub out well. The tin armoa is very musty. Kind of like wet grass and hay. Need to be dried out a bit to avoid the bite.

Its lights up well after a bit of drying and produces nice white smoke. It's quite tasty.

In the tin there's lots of pleasant back cherry aroma. The flake is lovely and easy to rub out. Slightly moist, I let this sit for a few moments. Despite this it still burned a bit wet. Next time I will let it sit longer.

I packed this using the Frank method and was pleased to taste the subtle flavorings this method affords the smoker. It burned evenly and fairly cool. I have to mention this is a great way to smoke certain tobacs. Big puffs of cool smoke with hardly a touch of bite even from virginas.

This blend is so well balanced I couldn't distinguish between individual tobacs. Just a good heady blend that I believe would be well worth investing in for the cellar.

Sykes,Follodor & co. at Low Country (smokingpipes.com) have certainly come up with a winner. They were kind enough to send a sample of Waccamaw with my most recent order. This offering is rich with VA. The Perique and Orientals play their roles as the supporting cast. I have not ventured into the straight VAs much. However, I would think, if you are a straight VA smoker this would be a marvelous way to introduce yourself to VA/Perique blends. Forgive me, if this imagery does not work for you, but the aroma reminded me of a rainy day in Winston-Salem, NC. i REALLY enjoyed the times I have been there and look forward to my next rainy day there. The reason I am giving this three stars instead of four is that I am not fond of Izmir leaf.

I picked up a tin on recommendation of a couple of friends of mine.

I found this to be an interesting blend where the addition of the orientals helps add to the VaPer some spice. The flakes are standard C&D style fare, broken up and easy to either stuff or dice/tear into smaller pieces. Lighting was easy as it took quickly and didn't seem to be too moist from the new tin.

I enjoyed the smoke but think the oriental might be a little heavy as in my experience it didn't allow much of the sweetness of the VA to come through. The Perique was more noticeable towards the end of the bowl and was the stewed fruit taste that I really enjoy.

Its an interesting blend but I'm not sure if it will penetrate the normal rotation or not.

Fine mixture based on Virginia - not surprise from where it comes. Only, in my opinion, it needs a little more aging. However, it is great tobacco for morning since it is enough mild.
