Watch City Cigar Persian Slipper

(3.27)
This is a beautiful mild Oriental blend of the highest quality. Fine Turkish and Middle Eastern tobaccos lightly spice a bed of the highest quality crumb cut burley and stoved cavendish. A dash of bright Virginia rounds off this blend.
Notes: Website states, "Not dry and strong like the tobacco Holmes kept in the toe of a Persian slipper but more like the slipper itself, soft and comfortable! This is a blend in the Scottish tradition which leans toward the Oriental. Izmir Turkish, Green River Black Cavendish, Crumb-Cut Burley, Latakia, a touch of Perique and a bit of Carolina ribbon for a nutty sweetness."

The burley is toasty, nutty, woody, earthy, molasses sweet with a touch of cocoa and takes a light lead over the other tobaccos. The Izmir is smoky, woody, earth, herbal, slightly buttery sweet and rather sour with mild floral dry and spice notes as a very competitive supporting player. Enough so that it’s virtually a team mate of the burley. The smoky, woody, earthy, musty sweet Cyprian Latakia is in the background. The spicy, raisiny, plumy perique is a condiment. The grassy, citrusy bright Virginia is is a condiment, too. The unsweetened Green River black cavendish tempers potential rough edges, adding a little creamy brown sugar to round out this blend. While it is fairly well balanced for the most part, some of the ingredients show up a little more in some spots than others and then recede for a few puffs. The strength is a couple of steps past the center of mild to medium, while the taste is a rung past that mark. The nic-hit is in the center of mild to medium. Won't bite or get harsh, but does have a small rough edge. Burns at a moderate pace, clean and cool and leaves little moisture in the bowl. Requires few relights. Has a pleasant, lightly lingering after taste. An all day smoke.

Persian Slipper is a very light blend due to the heavy dose of Orientals, but the flavor was full - mainly thanks to the added Virginia and unflavored Cavendish. The experience with this tobacco was very tasty for me, but I found that I needed to beef up the blend with more Burley (I chose Five Brother), to really enjoy it. So, if you gravitate toward a fullness of flavor but very light nicotine presence, this could be your manna from Heaven.

Watch City Cigar Co. is my local B&M and last time I was there I grabbed a 2oz bag of this on a whim.

Turned out to be a good choice; Persian Slipper to me conjured up images of Sherlock Holmes and his "strong" tobacco (which he stored in the toe of a Persian Slipper) but PS isn't strong at all. It's a good mild English type blend with the burley and cavendish at the front but with the supporting players adding enough of their character (sweet, spicy and smokey) to keep this blend interesting. Burns well and produces a good bit of creamy smoke.

This would be a good candidate for an all day tobacco if you like light to mild English blends.

Persian Slipper's name conjures up the spices of the Middle East. This is a mild to medium bodied tobacco with enough complexity to keep it from being bland. The pouch scent would have led me to believe that PS is a full on aromatic. Fortunately, that isn't the case in the smoke. The unflavored Cavendish adds a bit of body and at first light; the burley leads the show followed closely by the Orientals. The Latakia really is taking more of a back seat on this one. The flavoring provides a nice, steady backdrop to the tobacco flavor. Persian Slipper doesn't offer the sweetness that would often be associated with a spiced blend. It didn't leave a ghost in my pipe and while a purist would call this an aromatic, I don't find the needle moves over to that realm for me. One of the things that I like about Watch City is their fearless pursuit of pushing out the boundaries and Persian Slipper is no exception. Recommended.

Lightly smoky aroma. At times, I seem to detect a faint vanilla top dressing, but that could arise naturally from the many types of leaf in this blend.

Gave it about 10-15 mins drying time per other reviewers which was perfect. Burned evenly and cleanly. Really nice flavor to this one. Smooth, buttery, and steady-but-somewhat-subdued woodsy notes all the way through.

Only reason I'm giving three stars is because there are richer, more interesting blends in the world. But for a mild English, you can't go wrong with the Slipper. Very nicely done.

This is not exactly what I expected from the description, but it's still a very good blend. The Orientals and the unsweetened Black Cavendish are very much in evidence to the detriment of the Virginias and whatever Burley there might be. This makes PS a very smooth smoke, with a slightly sweet edge, leaving the Virginias and the Turkish cautiously on the background.

Mild but flavoursome, PS has perhaps more of an American character than an English or Eastern mixture. I see very little resemblance to Dunhill's Early Morning, but taken in its own terms it's a palatable introduction to Virginia/Oriental blends. Room aroma is tolerable. In the pouch there's a leathery-sweet note that differentiates it from most English Oriental blends. It comes at the right moisture level, but the Cavendish does make it slightly difficult to light. A nice experience but I won't be ordering more. I much prefer Justice Mixture.

This's just one a those blends that you need to buy just for it's packaging.(it's got a caricture of the former Iraqi information minister displayed prominately) This is one high quality blend! The oriental and turkish leaf are simply sublime and the burley and cavendish play off them perfectly!Unlike similar blends,Bob's flavor remains true all the way to the bottom of the bowl and never becomes harsh no matter how hard it's pushed. It's similar in character to Samuel Gawith's "Squadron Leader" minus S.L.'S occasional tongue bite.I believe it would also appeal to those who enjoy Dunhill's "EMP" and Pease's "Piccadilly".I would classify this as an english "breakfast blend" and whole heartilly recommend it to lovers of oriental leaf... * * * * prep

* * * * UPDATE 12-2-05 * * * * This has fast become my "go to" morning smoke at least five days a week! I strongly encourage others to try it, as it's 'far and away' the best tobacco of it's type availabe anywhere!..
