Just an ambiguous but related thought, maybe happiness in life can be attained by the pursuit of the simple and ostensibly deemed unexceptional. But let us be honest here. It is genuinely human nature to seek the duly ordained “best” and most extravagant, for we have been conditioned to believe that is where true greatness can be found. Putting this application into the perspective of we pipe smokers, it is the insatiable chase for that coveted unobtainable Penzance, as we overlook the field of potential gems that lie glistening at our steadied feet.

By chance encounter, however, a curious step forward is met with a sensible nudge from one of these acquirable nuggets, Blend 00. Looking down at the specimen of note, its apparent surface is plainly cut by facets of seemingly common construction. Being merely composed of basic unflavored Burley tobaccos, a minimized opinion begins to form of a foreseeably unassuming nature. But let us look with more discernment at this jewel mined from the brick-and-mortar operation, the Uhle Tobacco Company.

Before I get too officially underway, allow me to share a related exchange encountered in the early phase of my trial assessment. Being just a few bowls in, a credible source informed me that the illustrious blender Bob Runowski of C&D Burley fame personally declared that this simple offering is, in fact, the finest Burley specimen in existence. Just process that statement for a rational moment. This qualified viewpoint is hugely significant on all accounts, make no mistakes. Taking that personal disclosure under advisement, my excitable curiosity to vet out the reputable proof in the pudding naturally magnified as consequence.

Tendered as an exclusive White Burley offering, the bulk Blend 00 reveals a standard facing that is unimaginably decorative. With that, a lavish assemblage of quality prepared tobaccos form an expert configuration of rich ribbon-cut strands of varying features and extensive girth. Under the lens of magnification, evidence of the progression found in a pressed flake is discoverable as a showing of barbed, semi-distressed pieces fill the colorful bounds of the imaging. A seductive palette of autumn schemed hues greets the eye in a tincture of fainted tans, golden orange, complex variegated browns, rich dark chocolate, and affectionate drips of somber espresso. And the very feel of the tobacco itself is indicative of rested moisture given the credible suppleness of its physical texture.

Respectfully the blend’s pouched aroma evokes receivable sentiments that extend beyond the confines of a simple Burley. In particular, the characterized fragrance swells with earthen soured spices leaning upon a vivid meshing of herbal provoked wood and a bracken vegetal quality. Coming forth a movement of latent vinegar bundles itself with a modest inference of pungency, as the combination smartly envelops the blend’s primed footing of sweetened nuttiness. Clearly, the sheer fullness of branded character experienced is remarkably intricate. Therefore, fairly stated, Blend 00’s aroma is suggestive of an enriched tobacco destined to impart more grandeur than perhaps originally anticipated.

With the basal equity of Blend 00’s essential recipe, it is truly a moot point to deny its elemental modesty. Truthfully it does not take an Einstein to reasonably deduce that, in theory and in practice, this tobacco has limited facets with respect to the mains of its component ingredients. Largely, Burley is what Burley is after all, and in this case that would seem to draw down the synopsis quite concisely. Well think again, for in actuality, one single bowl immediately discloses impressions that are of a most contradictory nature. And that is where it begins but is most definitely not where it ends, my friends.

Incontestably, Uhle has unfurled a proficiently elevated specimen for the given genre. Depicting the common experience, Blend 00 stands forthright as a rudimentary Burley production all be it, yet the magnetism of the delightful character that is bestowed defies mere native simplicity. In terms of generalities, this blend engenders a milder intensity but sheds considerable depth and fullness to its celebrated flavor. Much to my chagrin, I cannot elaborate on the subtleties of the specific art or science deployed here, but the attained results in this particular blending are quite idyllic and extraordinary.

As experienced, the tobacco delivers a consistently polished representation of essential Burley. There is an impressive degree of stately smokiness and tasteful seasonality that creatively tantalizes the senses. And as the bowl progresses, the registration of flavor expands with the darkened resonance of engaging spice and earthy vigor. Ultimately, in smoking this blend, the common piper shall experience a mellowed and a charismatic digression in the undeniable savor that can be achieved through the usurped complexity and layers of elegant Burley nuance.

A warming push of toasty sweet-natured pecan generously primes the main band of registerable flavor. Spiraling beautifully forward, the nuttiness pulls with it a balancing complement of darker zestfulness trimmed by modest carbonized spicing which renders the sensation of smoky, oily dark roasted coffee. Supporting amid the bottom reaches of the profile, the comforting occurrence of spicy robust wood circulates accented by eased tartness, a progressed ginger herbal quality, and a lower mocking of dried fruits colorfully reminiscent of raisin and apricot actually.

As this well-rounded sphere of tiered flavor tapers to its tasteful close, the trailing comments endow an exceptionally delicate and smooth allusion of baked clove honey sugars. This sugary factor is so well remarked that it made me wonder in fact if there is a subtle but definite coating present within. And to further annotate the grand projection, embellishing accents of light anise and an exceptionally passive cocoa effuse through the mélange of noteworthy flavor.

Exceptionally profuse clouds of silky silver-gray plumes is a further hallmark to Blend 00’s innate attributes. Texturally, the smoke manifests a full-bodied creamy complexion with each enticing drawl. A calmed scent of spiced smoky nutwood met with perky sweetish sourness permeates to form its standard persona. Distinctly, there is an herbal aura sheathing the crest of essence, which is as pastoral in mood as the fragrant winds rolling off a settled country field. Still, a lightness in weight is observed and a common determination to dissipate with a promise of lingering attentiveness.

When all is said and done, the tobacco’s mechanical properties corroborate the manners of its inspiring substance. Principally, at the eased dropping of its optimally moist fibers within an array of pipes, of which I rather favored the companion Pot briar as pictured, Blend 00 demonstrates consistently moderate temperatures and an evenly founded cone. Additionally, the uniform pace of its burn facilitates an extended session of undeniable enjoyment. Being a solid Burley, what comes from the contribution of nicotine is plausibly of medium intensity for most takers I suspect.

In closing, within our modern, advanced society, time and time again we are reminded of the gaps in our collective awareness. In the moment, these circumstances can and often do unveil themselves as contradictions. Yet, with each incident we come to learn, and therefore we evolve to embrace what is so. Maybe this speaks to the pre-destined journey of man? Regardless of that eternal mystery, we can readily conclude that happiness in a life of piping can be secured in the quest of that which is obviously simple. Quite unexpectedly what is often discovered is a wealth of contentment and the elegance of true sophistication, which Blend 00 superbly exemplifies.

Objective Scoring: (basis: flavor, standard genre/leaf attributes & mechanicals): 112/130 ? 3.1 WAVG.

Subjective Rating: (factored for likeability & cost): 3.7 Pipes.

The burleys sport a mild toasty dryness, along with a bit of nuttiness, a fair amount of earth, a little wood, and hint of dry sharpness. The small amount of sweetness of burley gets a slight upward nudge from a topping to smooth out the experience. The strength is just past the center of mild to medium, and taste level barely reaches medium. The nic-hit is a step past the mild mark. Won’t bite, but has a sliver of roughness. Burns cool, clean, and a tad slow with a very consistent, lightly sweet, lightly savory flavor from beginning to end. Leaves very little moisture in the bowl, and has a very pleasing after taste. Needs a average number of relights. It doesn't have a cigarette or an ashy taste at all. It can be an all day smoke if you choose or a mixer, too.

Like Uhle's Perfection Plug Burley, I would hesitate to call this one a "pure" burley. There is a definite sweetening agent included as a topping - very light but very noticeable. Aside from various OTC's, the only really pure uncased burley I've ever smoked is C&D's Burley Straight. This one is not as "pure" as that one, but is the better for it. The cut here is a string cut (but not shag) as opposed to the plug of the C&D (and Perfection Plug).

This is probably the best tasting burley out there, to my tastebuds. The topping adds to the mix, and there is even a smidge of complexity to this one! I'm not used to that with tobaccos that are all burley. But complexity is not the point here... flavor is, and this one has all the flavor you could want. I can imagine non-burleyphiles enjoying this one, as it has a kind of Virginia tobacco feel. The taste is more robust than VA but the added sweetener helps level the playing field.

If you love Grape Nuts cereal, go with the C&D above. If you like a hint of sugar on your Grape Nuts and you like to add a nice bagel or toast with the meal, go with this one.

Simply stated; the best pure Burley I've ever smoked, period. This is remarkable weed that is cool, biteless, a tad sweet and has a little punch to it. Nothing like many of the Burley blends on your local drug store's shelf. Additionally, this one does not grow bitter near the bottom of the bowl. Instead, the strength picks up a bit and once all leaf is consumed, leaves your palate feeling refreshed and satisfied.

An all-day smoke and new discovery for this long-time pipe puffing cowboy. If you enjoy Burley tobacco with no extras, please give Uhle's 00 a try.

I was really impressed with this from the first bowl. This is a solid burley smoke that is mild and tasty. I am not getting complex notes or subtle flavors. I am getting tobacco, and it is very satisfying.

If you need a fancier review, I will direct you to DK or JimInks.

I have smoked up about 6 oz of this so far. It is just a great burley smoke that you have to try if you a fan of this type of tobacco. It is up there with Aged Burley Flake, and it comes at a better price point.

A fantastic burley. If I were requested for a good burley in ribbon form, I would no doubt recommend this blend. The only burley that has exceeded this to my tastes is Solani's ABF. But the two are so dissimilar that there is room for both in a cellar.

It is earthy and it is nutty sweet, but not too sweet. It burns well and also mixes well to tone down some overly sweet aromatics. there is not too much more that I can add to this. Buy some.

Despite the warning a few posts below... I'm primarily a smoker of English blends because I have a very dull sense of taste, but I wanted to try this out, never having smoked a straight burley, why not go to the top of heap right away.

It was a very cool smoke and had a light flavor of, I don't know hard to id, something like sweet, green, and almost a fragrance, perfume note... Not unpleasant at all. I did not detect any cigarette taste or smell. The room note was better than my english blends (according to my wife).

I liked it, and will put it into my rotation. It left no bite and I could see smoking this all day. Because of its clean and simple taste I think I will use it as like a palate cleanser between the heavier stuff I like.

If you have not tried this, it is worth a go.

This "00 Burley" has changed my mind about straight Burley tobacco as this offering from Uhle's is simply outstanding! I only keep a couple of different Burley tobacco's in the cellar and this one goes to the top of the taste chart. Wonderful flavor, and underlying sweetness make this well cut tobacco a MUST for any Burley smoker and for those that have stayed away from Burley (like me!), "00" is a reason to come back for another try. IMHO its the champaign of Burley! Highly recommended!

Before opining on Blend 00, I just want to echo what everyone else has said about the customer service at Uhle's. I have been dealing with them, off and on, since 1981, and NEVER have I had a moment's dissatisfaction. Just great people, in all respects.

Now, to the tobacco. For some reason, I had never tried this blend by itself, and I am primarily a Burley smoker. All of what's been said in praise of its many merits is true and earned. There cannot possibly a smoother or purer Burley anywhere. And as to whether it is cased, I'd have to say it is. But the casing is probably no more than sugar water, just to take any edges off the Burley. It does not seem to alter the taste or room note. That taste is the defition of nutty. There is virtually no earthiness to it at all, and what slight cocoa notes one detects in the pouch aroma do not seem to translate into taste.

Blend 00 was not at all what I was expecting. The cut is a thick ribbon, with something close to broken flake popping up now and then. And the biggest surprise of all was the smell of Dark Fired Kentucky, faint but there, in the pouch aroma. DFK is, of course, Burley, and could therefore be in a blend proclaimed to be 100% Burley. But Jeff Steinbock, president of Uhle's, denied it's in the mix, and I believe him. Still, it was interesting.

Taste is subjective, and despite its superb quality, Uhle's 00 just doesn't do it for me. It's flavors are not the ones I seek in a Burley. Uhle's Crushed White Burley is far more to my liking. Here in Kentucky, we're proud of our Burley and our Bourbon, and the two make a great combination. But just as some Bourbons are well-beyond my wallet, Uhle's tobaccos are stratosherically priced. As a group, that's the only fault I can find with them.

An outstanding ready-rubbed straight burley from the gentlemen at Uhle’s. Blend 00 is a wholesome, daily smoke kind of tobacco with a subtle sweetness and a faint toasted oat-like flavor. I taste a delicate topping on this, perhaps a light dressing of honey or maybe even maple or brown sugar. When packed as is and not dried or rubbed out any further, Blend 00 burns slow, stays lit and produces very little moisture but a good volume of smoke. The finish is clean and leaves a gentle, somewhat grassy taste on the palate. The room note is sweet and pleasant. Surely there’s an awful lot to like about this modest offering. I am somewhat fussy about straight burley blends and for the most part there are only a handful that I smoke with any regularity. I must admit that when I first tried Blend 00 I didn’t get it; my tastes have changed over the last couple years and now I do. No doubt, this is very good burley leaf.

I started pipe smoking in 1976 and after all this time I would say I generally gravitate toward a good burley smoke. I've enjoyed Uhle's Cut Plug Burley in the past and recently ordered their Blend 00. No aroma detected from the pouch nor taste from the pre draw light once I filled a bowl. No issues with lighting or keeping it lit. No chemical taste either. A nice comforting smoke, mildly sweet (perhaps only sugar water used here), and an old timey room note. Other than a slight nip to the tongue, there was no bite per se, and similar to their cut plug burley. This is a set it and forget it type of smoke. Would a tad of flavor (cocoa or molasses) improve it? Perhaps, but this is very good as is. With a pure tobacco presence and nicotene that is not over the top, it is a nice codger burley and way better than the likes of Lane Ltd RR, Sir Walter Raleigh, etc. An all day, every day smoke for sure, and If you like burley, a solid winner. 5 stars.
