Despite the warning a few posts below... I'm primarily a smoker of English blends because I have a very dull sense of taste, but I wanted to try this out, never having smoked a straight burley, why not go to the top of heap right away.

It was a very cool smoke and had a light flavor of, I don't know hard to id, something like sweet, green, and almost a fragrance, perfume note... Not unpleasant at all. I did not detect any cigarette taste or smell. The room note was better than my english blends (according to my wife).

I liked it, and will put it into my rotation. It left no bite and I could see smoking this all day. Because of its clean and simple taste I think I will use it as like a palate cleanser between the heavier stuff I like.

If you have not tried this, it is worth a go.

Before opining on Blend 00, I just want to echo what everyone else has said about the customer service at Uhle's. I have been dealing with them, off and on, since 1981, and NEVER have I had a moment's dissatisfaction. Just great people, in all respects.

Now, to the tobacco. For some reason, I had never tried this blend by itself, and I am primarily a Burley smoker. All of what's been said in praise of its many merits is true and earned. There cannot possibly a smoother or purer Burley anywhere. And as to whether it is cased, I'd have to say it is. But the casing is probably no more than sugar water, just to take any edges off the Burley. It does not seem to alter the taste or room note. That taste is the defition of nutty. There is virtually no earthiness to it at all, and what slight cocoa notes one detects in the pouch aroma do not seem to translate into taste.

Blend 00 was not at all what I was expecting. The cut is a thick ribbon, with something close to broken flake popping up now and then. And the biggest surprise of all was the smell of Dark Fired Kentucky, faint but there, in the pouch aroma. DFK is, of course, Burley, and could therefore be in a blend proclaimed to be 100% Burley. But Jeff Steinbock, president of Uhle's, denied it's in the mix, and I believe him. Still, it was interesting.

Taste is subjective, and despite its superb quality, Uhle's 00 just doesn't do it for me. It's flavors are not the ones I seek in a Burley. Uhle's Crushed White Burley is far more to my liking. Here in Kentucky, we're proud of our Burley and our Bourbon, and the two make a great combination. But just as some Bourbons are well-beyond my wallet, Uhle's tobaccos are stratosherically priced. As a group, that's the only fault I can find with them.

I'll gloss over most of what I've tried (or re-tried), I've been very happy with the Stokkebye Cube Cut and pleasantly surprised by Prince Albert. Then I came across a sealed bag of Uhle's OO that I had set aside some time ago.

I can't remember what I paid for the 14oz. bag, I recall it was quite inexpensive, less than the drugstore name-brands, more than the "Super Value" types.

To come to the point. Uhle's OO is a superb medium strength, medium tasting burley tobacco. It looks like PA, tastes quite a bit like PA, with the addition of a very slight cigar note, like Carter Hall perhaps? But better, so much better. Very natural, and no gooey fingers before or after a smoke...something that's always turned me off. This is the kind of product one can get when it's produced by a handful of people who care about what they do. At the moment it's not listed on the Uhle's web site, but I'd bet it's still available; do give it a try.
