Uhle's Blend 00

All righty, then! Some say this Burley is mildly flavored, some say there is no flavoring detected. I don't know for sure... not a well trained palate, you see & basically still a novice piper but am going to use the extremely mild choice. This double ought has an ever so slight sweetness about it that caught my attention, regardless. I wouldn't have guessed a burley could taste this sweet without a light flavoring but what do I know?... haven't really tried that many burleys in a few years. The Pipestud recommended this to me & I'm glad he did... I love it & it can be an all day smoke for sure. It takes a good while to finally dry enough to stoke a bowl. After a few tokes, I set my pipe down, let it cool & then came back about twenty minutes later & it was even better. It doesn't bite & has a good burn rate & produces little moisture when properly prepared. This will be a mainstay in my rotation.

I would also like to take this opportunity to thank all the experienced pipers on this site that have helped me to obtain some of the best tobaccos I've ever smoked. I never even knew there was such a thing as Balkan Sobranie OM, Royal Yacht, Bells Three Nuns, etc., until around ten years ago. I only knew of drug store/grocery blends or the Tinder Box blends in the big glass jars, you see. Somehow, I stumbled upon Pipestud's website while surfing one evening & things started happening... he became my mentor in the hobby. Then I joined TR & began shopping for tinned tobaccos online. Where have I been all my life? I love this hobby & it helped me kick the cigarette habit. I prefer the stronger blends, have an occasional strong, Cuban seed, Dominican cigar, smoke outside or under a vent & don't inhale anything. Life is good!

I found this to be very pleasing. Perfect moisture level. It provides a nice sweetness on my pallet. It burns well and never bites. This is probably one of the best burleys I have ever smoked. I will buy a 14 oz. bag on my next purchase. Love this tobacco! The flavor profinle is nutty and chocolately. How can you beat that.

Uhle's 00 presents as a mixture of light and medium brown ribbon. Jar note is semi-sweet and bready with no chemical or otherwise unnatural, non-tobacco notes. Double Aught arrives at optimal moisture level, takes a match well, and burns very cool and clean. The charring light brings a very brief waft of cotton candy sugar, which quickly settles down into an incredibly smooth burley balance of lightly salted nut, brown sugar and parchment. There is an underlying breadiness to this blend and a very nice balance of sugar, basswood, parchment and nut. Flavored are consistent down to the bottom of the bowl. 00 if off the charts in smokability for a burley blend: smooth with no bite, and an exceptionally cool, clean burn. There is a very small amount of natural flavoring agent applied here, with subtle hints of maple, brown sugar and perhaps a tiny pinch of aniseed.

This is a truly superior burley blend, on the sweet side of the genre, but as smooth and naturally flavored as one could desire. As a lover of the few great burley blends out there, I am very fortunate to have discovered it.

Update 2020: I love this tin note!

Like burley? Need an everday/all day smoke? This could be it. This particular burley is well-rounded and smokes easily. There is no cigarette taste, but it does have quite a light and almost sweet nuttiness to it.

They sell their tobaccos at Uhle's pre-packaged into 3.5 and 7oz. bags, and the moisture level for this one is just right, although drying it out or packing it an hour ahead of time isn't a bad option.

I have found this one works best for me in a cob, but doesn't lose anything in translation if you go to a briar.

Full disclosure...I love burleys, good ones, anyway, and this one is as fine as you'll find straight up. Be wary of any review on this site that starts off with "I smoke predominately English blends, but I gave this one a try..." If you don't like burley, then stay away and don't knock it. For those that enjoy it, pack a bowl.

This is the burley against which all others must be judged. It is the pinnacle of it's genre. Smooth and delicious with a slight natural sweetness. No bitterness from start to finish. Very satisfying and lively. Cool and refreshing. All confirmed pipesters should try this gem at least once. I applaud Uhle's, for maintaining a quality that is becoming harder to find in today's world. Please support their efforts.

This is the greatest burley blend I have ever smoked.

Just an ambiguous but related thought, maybe happiness in life can be attained by the pursuit of the simple and ostensibly deemed unexceptional. But let us be honest here. It is genuinely human nature to seek the duly ordained “best” and most extravagant, for we have been conditioned to believe that is where true greatness can be found. Putting this application into the perspective of we pipe smokers, it is the insatiable chase for that coveted unobtainable Penzance, as we overlook the field of potential gems that lie glistening at our steadied feet.

By chance encounter, however, a curious step forward is met with a sensible nudge from one of these acquirable nuggets, Blend 00. Looking down at the specimen of note, its apparent surface is plainly cut by facets of seemingly common construction. Being merely composed of basic unflavored Burley tobaccos, a minimized opinion begins to form of a foreseeably unassuming nature. But let us look with more discernment at this jewel mined from the brick-and-mortar operation, the Uhle Tobacco Company.

Before I get too officially underway, allow me to share a related exchange encountered in the early phase of my trial assessment. Being just a few bowls in, a credible source informed me that the illustrious blender Bob Runowski of C&D Burley fame personally declared that this simple offering is, in fact, the finest Burley specimen in existence. Just process that statement for a rational moment. This qualified viewpoint is hugely significant on all accounts, make no mistakes. Taking that personal disclosure under advisement, my excitable curiosity to vet out the reputable proof in the pudding naturally magnified as consequence.

Tendered as an exclusive White Burley offering, the bulk Blend 00 reveals a standard facing that is unimaginably decorative. With that, a lavish assemblage of quality prepared tobaccos form an expert configuration of rich ribbon-cut strands of varying features and extensive girth. In terms of generalities, this blend engenders a milder intensity but sheds considerable depth and fullness to its celebrated flavor. Much to my chagrin, I cannot elaborate on the subtleties of the specific art or science deployed here, but the attained results in this particular blending are quite idyllic and extraordinary.

As experienced, the tobacco delivers a consistently polished representation of essential Burley. There is an impressive degree of stately smokiness and tasteful seasonality that creatively tantalizes the senses. And as the bowl progresses, the registration of flavor expands with the darkened resonance of engaging spice and earthy vigor. Ultimately, in smoking this blend, the common piper shall experience a mellowed and a charismatic digression in the undeniable savor that can be achieved through the usurped complexity and layers of elegant Burley nuance.

A warming push of toasty sweet-natured pecan generously primes the main band of registerable flavor. Spiraling beautifully forward, the nuttiness pulls with it a balancing complement of darker zestfulness trimmed by modest carbonized spicing which renders the sensation of smoky, oily dark roasted coffee. Exceptionally profuse clouds of silky silver-gray plumes is a further hallmark to Blend 00’s innate attributes. Texturally, the smoke manifests a full-bodied creamy complexion with each enticing drawl. A calmed scent of spiced smoky nutwood met with perky sweetish sourness permeates to form its standard persona. Distinctly, there is an herbal aura sheathing the crest of essence, which is as pastoral in mood as the fragrant winds rolling off a settled country field. Still, a lightness in weight is observed and a common determination to dissipate with a promise of lingering attentiveness.

When all is said and done, the tobacco’s mechanical properties corroborate the manners of its inspiring substance. Principally, at the eased dropping of its optimally moist fibers within an array of pipes, of which I rather favored the companion Pot briar as pictured, Blend 00 demonstrates consistently moderate temperatures and an evenly founded cone. Additionally, the uniform pace of its burn facilitates an extended session of undeniable enjoyment. Being a solid Burley, what comes from the contribution of nicotine is plausibly of medium intensity for most takers I suspect.

In closing, within our modern, advanced society, time and time again we are reminded of the gaps in our collective awareness. In the moment, these circumstances can and often do unveil themselves as contradictions. Yet, with each incident we come to learn, and therefore we evolve to embrace what is so. Maybe this speaks to the pre-destined journey of man? Regardless of that eternal mystery, we can readily conclude that happiness in a life of piping can be secured in the quest of that which is obviously simple. Quite unexpectedly what is often discovered is a wealth of contentment and the elegance of true sophistication, which Blend 00 superbly exemplifies.
