Wilke Pipe Tobacco Wilke No. 5

(3.43)
Our exclusive Royal Scot is added to a mixture of medium cut Burley, rich Virginias and just enough Latakia to create a pleasant aromatic English blend. A nice change of pace.

For those who enjoy aromatic English blends, this one is a treat. Jar note of Latakia combined with that unique sweetness that can only be the Royal Scot. The aromatic English category is a difficult one. How to harmonize the blend without sacrificing the unique characteristics of the constituent tobaccos? Carole Burns nails this one.

Takes a match easily and burns evenly if it's allotted some drying time. The Latakia is seamlessly interwoven with the soft sweetness of the Royal Scot, the sweet and savory notes perfectly balanced. Neither vies for dominance here. Smooth, smooth, smooth.

The flavors are consistent through to the end. Again, this is a difficult style to pull off, with many offerings goopy with black Cavendish or overly dominant in Latakia or flavoring agent. The mixtures often go awry with weird flavor profiles and a hot burn. There is none of that here. An excellent all-day blend with plenty of flavor that is also generous to those around you. For best results, I strongly recommend packing this one loosely.

This is a masterpiece of the English Aromatic style, an aromatic for those who dislike aromatics.

(Edit 2016: Three years later and I'm really surprised this wonderful blend has only five reviews. This one's worth a taste and a big recommendation to those who enjoy aromatic English blends.)

Very nice blend. Just enough Latakia for me.... Not overpowering....... For me this is an all day smoke that leaves your taste buds able to function when the food arrives. Very high quality tobacco in Pipeworks blends, and this is no exception. Packs well, stays lit, and does not leave an after taste.

The Cavendish pulls the different components together and combines into a lovely smooth and sensual smoke. Not as exotic as number 10 but a lovely way to spend the afternoon. Totally without bite and almost hypnotic. Much smoother than the Frogs.
