Wilke Pipe Tobacco Gotham Court

(3.44)
A spicy aroma along with a subtle Oriental flavor. Orientals (other than latakia) and a rich Virginia base along with two cavendish tobaccos make up this special blend. Lightly aromatic!

I normally shy away from any blends with black Cavendish, but reviews here convinced me to go ahead and give this one a chance. I'm glad I did. There is sweet VA, to be sure, but it is countered by the Orientals, which add a perfect amount of spice. The interplay between these two dominant flavors is delightful. I tend to be a moody smoker, yet Gotham Court offers a smoking experience that manages to always fit my mood.

Some of the Wilke aromatics have a spicy, nutmeg-clove-ginger quality to them and in Gotham Court, this is quite apparent. Nice, broad ribbon-cut tobacco with no humectant that I can detect.

A very pleasant change of pace from the usual vanilla style blends. This might make a nice holiday treat but also works for me on a crisp autumn evening. Another unique, excellent Wilke aromatic.

This is a delicious and mild aromatic. A quality VA base with orientals. The flavor and aroma is of buttery cinnamon toast, yet the tobacco flavor is always present. Another great Wilke Aromatic.

Cut/Appearance: Cube chunks and ribbon cut strands of what appears to be Cavendish with hints of Orientals. No detection of Perique or Latakia as with their venerable Pipemaker?s Choice. Casing/Aromatics: Gorgeously characteristic Wilkian aroma with a light top dressing. All Wilkes have a baked, cookie/spiced bread quality.

Pouch notes: Aromatic and inviting, but never sickeningly so. Again, I detect a similar undertone in the more aromatic, sweeter Wilke Bohemian Blend with hints of nuttiness ala Nut Brown Burley.

Room/Burn notes: Sweet, rich taste with a beautiful aroma. There are scents and complexities I am not familiar with. First rate, unique stuff for which Wilke is known. Leaves a great scent in the room.

Taste: Like all Wilkes I?ve tried, they leave the tongue hungry for more. If you?re not addicted to pipe tobacco, you will be after you smoke this and comparable blends. A little hot on the tongue. Needs to be smoked slowly, but like a delicious morsel of food, I tend to gobble this stuff up; it?s that good. Almost impossible to take the pipe out of my mouth when I am smoking this or Bohemian. Makes my mouth water.

Comments: Easy to pack and keep lit. Like all Wilkes, there is attention to detail and great thought of preparation. There are the pronounced spices with hints of berry and liquor. Though I am a professed lover of English non-aromatics, especially traditional blends like Dunhill, Wilke makes it easy to love laced aromatics because they do it so well. This is a great winter tobacco, perfect for dessert, though I happen to be smoking a bowl right now before dinner.

Four of five stars
