Wilke Pipe Tobacco Gotham Court
(3.44)
A spicy aroma along with a subtle Oriental flavor. Orientals (other than latakia) and a rich Virginia base along with two cavendish tobaccos make up this special blend. Lightly aromatic!

The dark fruity, earthy, woody Virginias also offer a little citrus and grass as the base of the blend, and they are team players. They have a touch of fermentation and the slightest hint of “vinegar” which doesn’t last long at all. The woody, earthy, spicy, leathery, mildly floral, dry and lightly nutty, buttery sweet and sour Orientals provide a fair amount of support. Due to the confluence of ingredients, the tingly spice seems to have the attributes of nutmeg though none is present. There’s a little sugar from the black cavendish, which is a condiment. The mildly applied sweet vanilla topping lightly sublimates the tobaccos. The strength is just past the center of mild to medium while the taste just reaches the medium threshold. The nic-hit is just past the mild level. Won’t bite or get harsh. Burns cool and clean at a reasonable pace with very consistent sweet, lightly savory and spicy flavor from top to bottom. Leaves little moisture in the bowl and requires an average number of relights. Has a pleasant, short lived after taste. Can be an all day smoke.

When I put down my English blends and Vaper's and smoke an aromatic blend, I am looking for two things. The first being tobaccos of high quality as many aromatics are soaked in such a way that they mask the quality of the underlying tobacco. The second thing I look for are scents that don't taste artificial or leave a metallic taste. Gotham Court wins big on both counts. There is a complexity to this tobacco, so much so that I think it would be a good smoke without any aromatic flavor. The Orientals really stand out for me. Like many of the P&W blends it arrives a bit moist and does need ample time to dry. The wait is worth it if you enjoy a little spice with your sweet. Highly Recommended

Extremely similar to the McClelland's Townsman Cavendish series of blends, Gotham Court provides a wonderful Oriental/Virginia base with a little added flavoring that enhances the overall presentation in a way that provides for a little sweeter smoke and allows the leaf to play peekaboo with the enhancements. The Virginia in this one is ample and offers a little backbone and strength and the overall presentation is also very cool and bite free.

A kind of Dutch cavendish, similar to, say, SAIL, and very good indeed. The flavouring is not overdone at all, and certainly has a luxurious undertone. I rarely like an aromatic, but I love this one.
Try it with a glass of sherry!

This is a scrumptious mild aromatic, with a sweet Virginia base, spiced with a bit of Turkish.
The topping reminds me of buttery raisin cinnamon toast, and is very deftly applied. You can still taste the tobacco.
I first smoked this in a small clay cutty. It packed and lit very easily, and it is a low maintenance smoke. I prefer it in a smaller bowl, as it intensifies the taste.
I puffed on this like a steam engine, but received absolutely no bite. It smokes quite dry, but it will leave a slight sticky residue in the pipe. It will wipe out fairly easily however.
An excellent blend for any time of day. It would make an excellent blend for the novice as well, due to its mild qualities. Definitely worth a try if you like aromatics at all.

I have never smoked an aromatic that didn't bite just a little bit...until now. This blend offers a very mild & tasty smoke with a pleasing aroma. You can really pull on this stuff & it still doesn't bite. I would liked to have found this blend on my first attempt at pipe smoking forty years ago. Then, I would have stayed with the hobby. Mostly, all I was aware of back then were the few, harsh aromatic blends available at your local grocery or pharmacy store. I can't discern the flavoring/topping...maybe ginger &/or clove. Whatever it is, it works for me. Another outstanding offering from Pipeworks & Wilke. Therefore, IMHO, Gotham Court merits four ****s!

I love the sophisticated spice of good orientals. Not everyone does, and the flavor absent the smokey Latakia might not be your cup of tea. But, if you do recognize the complexity and nuances of those same orientals, then do yourself the favor of trying this.
Smooth and bite free to the bottom of the bowl with no waste or goop left behind. Just the craving for more and more.

Tin Note- This is spicy and just a little sweet smelling, I detect a hint of Nutmeg. This almost makes me think of arabic coffee when I smell it.
First light - This one took a little effort to get it going just right, but boy was it worth it, very much like the the bag note, spicy with a nice undercurrent of sweet. I really like the room note with this one.
Mid bowl- taste wise this pretty much stays the same, some of the sweetnes starts to come through nicely, but the spicy note really continues to carry this. I will note that I did get a little tongue bite with this, but that may have been my smoking more then the blend.
End- This stayed very tasty almost to the end, at the bottom, it started to get a little ashy, and rough, but the flavor stayed well in with it. On the downside it did start petering out a bit at the end and took several light to keep it going, which may account for some of the rough note. Grey ash, and hard dottle at the bottom

An absolutely wonderful tobacco! A very rich non-aromatic.It has a definite character that can be appreciated by both the aromatic and English blend smoker. There is nothing like it on the market. A very nutty and deep flavor, very staight forward. You either will love this, or not truly understand what is going on in the bowl as you smoke it.Bursting with rich virginias and a pronounced oriental aroma this blend is for the English smoker wanting something sweet for a change or, the aromatic smoker wanting something with more depth and flavor while still retaining that no latakia taste. I give it 3 stars!!.A must try for everyone!
