Wilke Pipe Tobacco Gotham Court

(3.44)
A spicy aroma along with a subtle Oriental flavor. Orientals (other than latakia) and a rich Virginia base along with two cavendish tobaccos make up this special blend. Lightly aromatic!

This is manufacturered by a one woman operation in Vermont that does not even smoke a pipe herself, she just inherited the business and you can tell. I was sent samples of this and another by a friend to try and had the following results. in the bag, it did have a nice sweet smelling aroma, kind of like cherries or blackberries. It is in mostly a long ribbon but with brown and black tobaccos interspersed. It pack easy and well, and lit up like a pro. At first, I was drawn back to the days Borkum Riff was king. Lots of smoke and aroma but nothing on the tongue but hot. And it grew hotter as it burned down. While it smelled good and sweet, I never was able to taste tobacco taste just the subtle berry taste. About three quarters down, I could tell it was going to scorch my tongue and ruin my smoking the rest of the day. I don't like this one at all and will give it away. Don't care to try it again. Stay away!

This is a very interesting blend for someone like myself who likes aromatics, but wishes for a little something more substantial in terms of making the transition to a mild English.

The aroma from the pouch is incredible with spices, and smokiness. I am not sure what if any toppings are here, but the taste is very rich, while being mild in the nicotine department. The room note is pleasing with a warm baked cinnamon toast smell. The orientals come through very nicely giving it a zesty taste, but not overwhelmingly so.

This blend is very high quality tobacco, as is all of Carol's offerings. This is similar to a Frog Morton type of taste.

Tin Note- This is spicy and just a little sweet smelling, I detect a hint of Nutmeg. This almost makes me think of arabic coffee when I smell it.

First light - This one took a little effort to get it going just right, but boy was it worth it, very much like the the bag note, spicy with a nice undercurrent of sweet. I really like the room note with this one.

Mid bowl- taste wise this pretty much stays the same, some of the sweetnes starts to come through nicely, but the spicy note really continues to carry this. I will note that I did get a little tongue bite with this, but that may have been my smoking more then the blend.

End- This stayed very tasty almost to the end, at the bottom, it started to get a little ashy, and rough, but the flavor stayed well in with it. On the downside it did start petering out a bit at the end and took several light to keep it going, which may account for some of the rough note. Grey ash, and hard dottle at the bottom

Another P&W aromatic similar to Dummerston and Bohemian Mixture. Again I am drawn to the rich spices, this one is very clove-y. I'm not sure I can distinguish orientals here, but the taste and aroma are wonderful. Incense-like, in a way. It makes me think of a Drew Estate Ambrosia cigar, without the cigarry nature. Wonderful stuff. Puff it hard for a blitz of non-biting flavor. Cool and savory.

An absolutely wonderful tobacco! A very rich non-aromatic.It has a definite character that can be appreciated by both the aromatic and English blend smoker. There is nothing like it on the market. A very nutty and deep flavor, very staight forward. You either will love this, or not truly understand what is going on in the bowl as you smoke it.Bursting with rich virginias and a pronounced oriental aroma this blend is for the English smoker wanting something sweet for a change or, the aromatic smoker wanting something with more depth and flavor while still retaining that no latakia taste. I give it 3 stars!!.A must try for everyone!

Really good aromatic stuff. Good taste and clean pipe grades it at least at three stars. Cold and cool smoke, no dirty after smoke - that is what I need for a real pleasure.

My first impression for that tobacco by Carole was full 3*, but Tobacco Jar makes it fantastic.

As most other tobaccos I have, a little wait gives a lot. It is not ageing, give it little pause before use. So was with Gotham Court. 4 month in Tobacco Jar's prison and Gotham Court wins 1 star more.

4 stars on today.

I agree with previous reviews. I, for a long time, was strictly english blend smoker. A while ago I tried some virginia blends and was pleasantly suprised at how full bodied and tasty they were. I then tried Gotham Court. Pouch aroma is wonderful and zesty. Room note is great(may remind you of your grandpa or dad's pipe tobacco). Taste is spicey but well balanced. I do not miss the latakia at all. White ash to the bottom of the bowl. I smoked a bowl just yesterday with the temp. outside at 90 degrees. The tobacco proved to be a good hot weather smoke as it is flavorful but not heavy. Two tips - when you open the pouch spread out the tobacco and let it sit out for at least 2 hours, 4 or 5 if you have the time as the tobacco comes a little to moist. When smoking a bowl smoke it slow and easy(as pipes should be smoked). If you puff to hard or rapidly you will feel the heat on the tounge.

Purchased as part of a quest to find an acceptable room-note. Gotham Ct. is sweet but not cloying, with the distinctive gingerbread flavor of P&W?s Cavendish, cut by the Orientals. It?s lighter and less sugary than Grammercy Park, a crisp cookie as opposed to a fudge brownie. It burns cool, with no bite -- and I puff a lot. As aromatics go, it?s definitely superior. I tired of it quickly, which is only to say that it didn't convert me from Esoterica blends. Although the room-note is pleasant enough while you are actually smoking, it takes days or weeks to dissipate, during which time the aroma loses its charm. So it failed the Wife?s Nose Test, which is why I?d bought it in the first place.

If you like high-end aromatics, Gotham Ct. is definitely for you. Just don?t buy it for the smell.
