Lots of virtual ink has been spilled in determining if this is the same as Escudo, with strong believers on both sides. Since I haven't smoked Escudo in some time and none since Stokkebye took it over, I can't say. I guess I'd believe either side if the truth came out. This one does look a lot like Escudo in the tin, smells a lot like my memory of it, and does remind me of it when smoked. Beyond that, only the blender knows for sure. This tin was gifted to me and I smoked about half of it, and will save the other half for later.

This one lands firmly on the fruity side of perique rather than the peppery, salty side. The Virginias are pretty tasty and sweet and the perique adds a plummy or perhaps figgy note. It all melds together in a nicely sweet and very mildly spicy flavor. Having never smoked this before, I can't comment on how closely the new blender replicated it, and it was very good, but not anything to get me too pumped. Certainly not like the first time I smoked Cope's Escudo, and nothing like my current vaper rotation. In fact, I actually preferred the Comoy #4 I smoked recently. But this is a very worthy blend that has a lot of fans for good reason. I just find it a little too sweet for my rotation. Try it if you prefer the sweet side of vapers.

I bought this bc I read a bunch of great reviews about it. I loved it for some time, but have moved on. This tobacco is nearly perfect in every way. I don't say that often, but I do believe it to be true.

The tin presentation is outstanding. Even for dunhill, who puts their presentation standards above the vast majority of others. Cool little coins of tobacco, spiraled in gold and darkish brown. Set slightly askew to for one large spiral inside the tin.

When you open it, it smells heavenly. Not too sweet, not ketchupy, not overl like raisins either. More like dates you might buy to make fruitcake. The coins are fun to prepare, in any way you may like. And the burn well pretty much any way you pack them. I liked to stuff one in the bottom of a group a pipe and then rub one out to stuff in the top personally.

The taste is light and sweet and the bowl finishes nice and dry. The smell doesn't upset the ladies either. It builds in intensity as it works down. And depending on how much I would rub them out, the flavor would build.

I would recommend this to most pipe smokers, as I believe it is nearly perfect. A must try for anyone. Only downside is if you try to hold onto them too long, they dry out a bit and then fall apart. Not very tasty dry either, so smoke up if you do get them.

These sure do look like Escudo coins, but the tin notes seem to differ. Escudo is much more fig/raisiny, while the Dunhill DNRs smell more like black tea. This is based on just one tin of each produced at different times, so who knows?

I find the Escudo to be a bit more in your face and, when pushed hard, to smoke a bit harshly. Haven't experienced that with DNR--it's pure pleasure all the way through a bowl. Definitely softer and mellower than Escudo, imo.

If you like your VaPers on the beefy side, this might not be your cup of tea. But if you're looking for a mellow one that would make a nice all-day companion, DNR is a formidable candidate.

A sweet and slightly fruity mild aromatic consisting of virginia and perique. It is cased/topped with various sugars, PG, plum juice, licorice, and unknown flavoring as per the German BMEL website: https://service.bmel.de/tabakerzeugnisse/index2.php?detail_id=100565&site_key=153&stichw_suche=dunhill&zeilenzahl_zaehler=47

The smoke is smooth and sweet. The virginias have a full flavor. The perique has a good amount of spice and perhaps adds some extra depth to the taste. Mild/medium nicotine. The casing/topping adds a noticeable sweetness and flavor dimension. A very tasty and satisfying smoke.

Id not smoked this blend for a while, since before the change in production. The old Murray's blend was sublime. But darn if this isn't close. In the great pantheon of Virginia/Perique blends.. Va/pers....this is near the top. Rattray's Hal O the Wynd is in that group (with some kentucky), Reiners Long Golden Flake (with burley) is also there, and the perhaps ultimate gold standard, Gawith's St James Flake. In a sense this is like the Gawith in that it is purely virginia and perique. And I see it as a smoother less earthy version of St James Flake. Its not as bright or spicy as the Reiner or as pungent or strong as the gawith, but its got a great natural sweetness and it does best if puffed slowly. Macbaren's HH Acadian Perique is another very fine blend, in ribbon form, but that is one with a bit of oriental in it and hence darker in flavor. This is just a wonderful sweet smooth blend. The nic hit is medium, if that, and it never bites. Its simply a top notch vaper if thats what you like. Easy to pack and light, too. The disks break up nicely and it affords a long-ish cool wonderful smoke. Three and a half. Its just not QUITE as good as the originial.

Peterson Navy Rolls, much beloved amongst the community, but I beg to differ. There is no doubt that this is a fine quality tobacco, but I find the perique to be a bit lacking. The predominant flavour in this blend comes from the grassy Virginias. I was expecting a bit more spice out of it, as it is classified as a Va/Per.

I'll keep an extra tin around to age, and see if it makes a difference for me. Updates coming in the future, but for now I found this blend lackluster considering the hype. There are better Va/Pers and better quality Virginias. However, this is an all around good tobacco - 3/4

When I smoked Dunhill - De Luxe Navy Rolls, it was a little strong for me. Even though, I enjoyed the sweetnes of the Virginias and peppery echoes of Perique. Recommended for the experienced pipe smoker. P.S.: the cut is very interesting and not easy for preparing, but it is a challenge for adventurous pipe smokers.

This review is for a 11 year tin of DNR. The tin note it's quite fruity and tangy from the Virginias with a musty odor from the perique. I find it to be similar to escudo but, less sweet and more earthy. Overall very good quality VaPer as expected but, I prefer Escudo.

This is a review of the STG-produced version of this blend. I have not tried any other versions.

The presentation is beautiful and neat. The coins are large and laid out neatly overlapping each other in line with the outer edges of the tin. This is equally as neat as Escudo is presented.

smell in the tin is citrusy and maybe grassy, kind of sour, like sour candy, musty, and somewhat fruity. It smells like fresh tobacco, but not like burley.

I have smoked this rubbed out, as well as slightly broken and stuffed. Both methods smoked well. The flavor is rich with cereal notes, molasses, plum, raisin, citrus, some red fruit, maybe dates. There is a musty darkness, and sometimes you get a hit of caramelized grain-like tastes. Maybe some honey notes in there. There is a nuttiness that can develop in the smoke.

The strength is about medium, and the nicotine is about the same. It's higher than Escudo, in my opinion. This is an incredibly refined blend.

This is often compared to Escudo, rightly so. They are produced by the same company. I personally think the blend is the same, meaning blended in the same proportions, but the Virginias are sourced (as indicated on the tin) are sourced from different places, with different terroir, producing a slightly different flavor. To me, Navy Rolls is darker and richer. That doesn't necessarily mean better. It's just different. I advise you to smoke a fresh tin of each and I think you will be able to decide which you like more. Unfortunately, Navy Rolls is no longer available, so anything you acquire now will have some age on it, which isn't such a bad thing. It's just bad for comparing this with Escudo.

This blend ages well. Any amount of aging over a year and you will get something even more special. The same could be said about Escudo.

I recommend this to the Virginia Perique-lover, the navy flake lover, the Virginia-lover. I would recommend it to anyone really. It's just a great blend. That being said, I would not say it's "highly recommended", or that you have to chase it on the market, because it's not available anymore. You can experience the same joy in some other blends out there.

A classic tobacco. Beautiful rolls consisting of virginia and perique. Quite pleasing to the eye. Nice tin and room note, very natural, grassy/vinegar like. Not too strong nor light tastewise and in the nic department. Ideal I would say. If you still have the chance to find it, try it!
