Peterson De Luxe Navy Rolls
(3.56)
De Luxe Navy Rolls are made in Denmark using hand-stripped Virginia tobaccos from Brazil and Africa, married with perique from Louisiana. This recipe produces an aromatic smoke with natural tobacco flavors and lovely sweet notes.
Notes: Formerly known as Dunhill Deluxe Navy Rolls, STG has changed the brand name from "Dunhill" to "Peterson".

This is fine tobacco. I write this review as a twenty-one year old who has enjoyed the pipe for about four years, so perhaps my comments included will be more helpful to the newly initiated. Leaf such as Navy Rolls and McClelland's Dark Star (although very different) were some of the first to show me that Virginia of itself is capable of great nuance and complexity of flavor.
Tin notes upon opening resemble freshly cut hay and raked leaves in the fall-time, an appropriate smoke for the harvest season. The coins rub out easily, and the texture of the leaf is pleasing to the fingers. The leaf packs into the pipe quite nicely and should burn evenly with two or three lights. Grassy notes seem to take center stage, while brighter citrus notes can be detected on the top, and subtler raisin and spice notes round things off nicely. Over half-way through, the flavors seem to unify and become more mellow. Perique seems to play a more subtle role, and decorates the Virginia. The bowl generally finishes cleanly with a few relights throughout, and leaves little or no dottle left in the bottom. The nicotine content is satisfying and not overwhelming, but I would recommend placing the smoke after a meal, rather than before.
In my experience, this tobacco ought to be rubbed out and let to settle for a day or two before being smoked. Freshly out of the tin, it tends to clog up and restrict the airflow of the pipe, possibly yielding a wet and spicy smoke. But then again, I generally prefer all my tobacco on the dryer side. As is known about Virginia leaf, if you begin to let the smoke get too hot, it can be difficult to get rid of the bite.
This is certainly a tin to be sought after, especially if you haven't tried it before, a worthy purchase and very rewarding smoke.

My second best VaPer. (after old gowrie) Full, complex and creamy. Fragrant with raisins, plums. I feel also hint of butter/cinnamon - like in wines matured in new american barrels. Round. Burns well to the very end, with a little spiciness only
It is medium to strong, N is pretty high for my taste. Easy burner, one of the easiest flake I ever burnt, smoke is creamy but dry, white ash at the end.

De Luxe Navy Rolls is a bit pricier than Escudo, and in many ways similarly great. The extra money buys you a creamier, fuller smoke, a slightly sweeter and enjoyable flavor out of the Virginias, raisin innuendos in addition to plum, and the same excellent Perique notes.
Splurge every once in a while. You'll love it.

As an addict of Escudo and Davidoff Flake Medallions, I just had to try this. Freshly opened tin has notes of plums, raisins and figs. Slight sour note, which I absolutely love in my Va's. Beautiful tin presentation looks like a stack of half dollars laid overlapped, in a perfect circle. Preparation was easy, rubs out just fine. No need to dry this blend, smokes perfect out of the tin. Initial lighting may take some time, but don't rush it. Get this too hot you will loose the subtle nuances this VaPer has to offer. This does seem to be a touch sweeter than Escudo, but unlike Escudo, the Perique spiciness tones down just after the first 1/4 of the bowl. However, you will always know it's there.
I truly enjoy this blend, but Escudo is better, and 5 bucks cheaper.

Wow, there are so many more eloquent and wordy reviewers than I would be able. I'll skip to my conclusion: I started trying VA's last year, bought several dozen brands/types. Two weeks ago I finally tried a tin of D-DNR. I'll agree with 90% of the others' perceptions. I totally enjoyed this, though I do agree it's WAY PRICEY. Easy to smoke all day, just really good ( plain ) tobacco flavor. Easy to fire-up and a joy to smoke. It will be in my steady rotation. I LIKE pure tobacco flavors and am not into condiments so I'll not go there. I do recommend.

Like a previous reviewer stated, this is not an in your face Virginia blend, but it certainly does not lack character. Either stuff and fold, or rubbed out, it burns rather nice and cool. From mid bowl to the finish, this one is real nice. Be patient and you will be rewarded. I'm certain this one will grow on me in time.

This review is of a Orlik-produced tin and I have not had the pleasure of a Murray's tin for comparison.
In my view the Dunhill blends made by Orlik are generally fine and well- rounded. DNR is no exception. As I work my way through the world of Virginia Perique blends, I am starting to detect the fine differences. DNR are cool coins and the tin note is fruity. The coins dry out nicely and bur well, whether rubbed out or folded. The Perique note is fairly subtle and the overall taste is of fine Virginia with Louisiana spice. Fine fine VaPer experience to be savored. Recommended.

This is the third tin of rolled navy cut flakes, with Davidoff's Medallions and Escudo being the other two, that I have enjoyed.
Dunhill's presentation in its Navy Rolls is spot on, well-arranged discs, crisp fruity fig scent, highest quality Toby. It is in its flavor profile smoky and sweet, in the same category as Escudo's Rolls.
In fact, I believe De Luxe Navy Rolls to be the SAME in every way as its less aggressively priced counter-part! That's why I'm stocking up on Escudo while the price difference remains in place [Pipes&Cigars recents raised Escudo's price-still below that of Dunhill's offering.
If your a fan of VaPers, treat yourself to either this blend or Escudo, and with either brand you'll be sampling quality-with a variance in pricing.

Opening a tin of this is always a pleasure. The presentation is second to none. The discs are beautiful and handling a treat. It burns well and evenly. A bit of tar serves as an axle on which other flavors revolve. This is a VaPer that should not be missed. I do wish that more curlies were produced, and mourn the passing of Dobie's 4 Square version, which is still the benchmark for this smoker. Recommended.

Had a job discerning what this smelled of when I first opened the packet, faint whiffs of something but couldn't quite place it, so I thought I would get stuck in quick sharp.
Considering this is almost flake like, packing and lighting are relatively easy. The flavour of the smoke is suprisingly mild and a little sweet, giving hints of lemons and golden syrup. The room note is equally mild and pleasant enough.
On the whole then, a nice pleasant smoke, nothing terribly exciting but won't let you down.
