The tin needs drying after opening, but other than that, this is a very good smoke, really. I am not sure whether I'd choose this one over Elisabethan Mixture, which is another Dunhill's in this range, but I have thoroughly enjoyed it anyway. These rolls do crumble quite nicely and they fill easily in your pipe. The perique bit is not as predominant as it is in the Elisabethan Mixture, but it is still in there in the background to keep you wondering every now and again. I'd class this as a medium/strong blend in terms of its nicotine content and it burns easily in your bowl if let to dry. If packed properly, this tobacco will leave a white ash with very little dottle residue at the end of it. I haven't been able to detect any flavouring apart from the perique, but, like I am saying, it is not very predominant anyway. This is a really good VaPer, I suppose, but I'm not sure I'd keep it in my rotation. Another good property of this tobacco is that it smokes really cool in your bowl and it does not seem to condensate that much, so I guess you could smoke it in any pipe. Also, I found it quite plain right through the whole bowl as it does not seem to evolve into something else. The only thing I'd mention about this is that you start getting the most out of it as you go past the first quarter of your bowl, but after this, it feels quite plain giving you the same smoking experience until the very end of it. This tobacco does not bite at all, it is somewhat sweet at times and not overtly spicy as any Virginia would suggest. I find these rolls quite mild, really, so give it a go and see how you get on with it. I am not sure whether these features could justify its price tag, but it is something worth trying anyway.

Edit1: I usually need to smoke a tobacco more than once to be able to fully appreciate it. Not that I'd not keep this tobacco in my rotation, but I have other blends I like more. This is not because I did not enjoy this blend, but due to the fact I always come to a point where I miss my old blends. Honestly, this tobacco is quite remarkable, so don't take my words in a negative way. These rolls are gorgeous, and the tin note is superb. Also, I said above that this tobacco does not evolve into something else and that it starts yielding after you go past the first quarter of the bowl, but this is not the case any more. The problem though is that I packed my first bowl right after the tin was open, and these rolls need drying a bit, so you need to let your tin breath a bit before filling up your bowl. I still think the perique in it is not overwhelmingly present, but the Virginia helps you forget all about this. Sometimes, as I was smoking this blend, it gave me the impression I was flavouring a straight Virginia (so sweet at times), so I can hardly complain about this. As a matter of fact, this blend does actually evolve every quarter of your bowl. At the very beginning it is quite mellow (I'd say quite Virginia), but then it evolves into flavours I can't even describe. And like I said before, you end up with very little dottle. I have thoroughly enjoyed every quarter of my bowls and it never gets sour in the end. Because of this, I am going to change this tobacco to 4 stars.

Edit2: I am starting to think this is a quite remarkable tobacco. As you go into the last quarter of your bowl, it develops into something that I can only describe as roast nuts/chestnuts. And the slower you smoke this blend, the more you get out of it. I particularly like its creaminess and the sort of piquant flavour you start with as you light up your pipe. I cannot see any reason why I should not keep this tobacco in my rotation.

This blend may have the single best visual presentation I've had the pleasure to witness. A perfectly designed product from the tin to the coin. The red circle around the label continues in the perfectly shaped coins with its Virginias and Periques harmonizing in a spiral to form a real pleasure to look at. This perfection of the circle is supplemented by the glorious smell of fig, plum, fresh bread and mowed hay emanating from within the tin. Two folds and a light rub of two delicious coins fills out a medium sized bowl and after a light, a tamp and a true light leads to a full, creamy sweet smoke. The word that lingers in my mind is still "round", because in the German language, which is my native tongue, that word is used for all things that are, not yet flawless, but unify all their qualities in a singular harmony. These Navy Rolls do just that in their taste and smoking qualities. Puffed carefully it is perfectly cool and smooth with a sweet and spicy taste of a bit of plum, fresh Virginia and subtle sugar. It gets your attention with a stronger nicotine punch but lets the mind wander and relax. In the last third of the bowl the spices get the upper hand. It turns darker and more complex. The fresh hay disappears and dark fruits arise without turning into roasted nuts like many other Vapers do. Whats left is grey ash and in my case a few curved baccy flakes since I seldom smoke til the very, very end, sparing my pipe the needed relights.

Each bowl leaves me satisfied but looking forward to the next. A truly rounded out experience and one of my all time favorites. Every pipe smoker should at least try it once. A true classic that has to be experienced.

The tin note hits you with straw. Yes its got Virginias what did I expect? Well I didn't expect to be tranported to my childhood laying straw down after mucking out stables. In fact I've even picked up a bit of a "cow country" smell, weirdly wonderful all the same.

The Virginias are what you'd hope but doubled. Sweet, citrus and clean. The Perique adds spice to the mix as is its job. A white pepper taste is what sprung to mind. Towards the end I worried for my pipe as the taste was so delicious that I was greedily toking like a child trying their first milkshake.

This is a wonderful clean, smooth tobacco taste that offers no tongue bite but pure joy.

A sweet and slightly fruity mild aromatic consisting of virginia and perique. It is cased/topped with various sugars, PG, plum juice, licorice, and unknown flavoring as per the German BMEL website: https://service.bmel.de/tabakerzeugnisse/index2.php?detail_id=100565&site_key=153&stichw_suche=dunhill&zeilenzahl_zaehler=47

The smoke is smooth and sweet. The virginias have a full flavor. The perique has a good amount of spice and perhaps adds some extra depth to the taste. Mild/medium nicotine. The casing/topping adds a noticeable sweetness and flavor dimension. A very tasty and satisfying smoke.

I like this blend very much. For me it provides a full, tasty, Virginia smoke, and the Perique is just right. My 50gm tin was purchased after reading some favourable reviews on this website (well done, guys, it's fantastic). I'd been after a good VaPer experience for some time, and this blend delivers. I was expecting some bite, but there was none at all. Being currently a casual (albeit reasonably experienced) pipester I found it a bit strong at around 1.5 coins worth. Oddly, it started out rather hot as you might expect for Virginia blends but actually seemed to cool down as the smoke progressed. I'd rubbed the coins out somewhat and left the baccy in my pipe overnight after about 30min air-drying and filling up. I won't go into detail about the flavours (fruit, figs, etc) as there are many reviewers on this site that do. Will just say this is a tasty, well-behaved VaPer that deserves four solid stars in spite of the relatively high price. Highly recommended.

many say this is exactly the same product as escudo. i thought these were better. deeper, i guess. stayed lit better. seemed to have the same level of perique though. but if someone told me smoke them blindfolded i dont think i would know the difference. so given the price tag, i will probably just keep buying escudo.

Placing their Navy Rolls in the luxury (deluxe) segment of products, Dunhill took an ambitious aim - and hit it flawlessly.

The mixture is indeed of deluxe quality in every aspect, from visual to olfactory to gustatory. A tin of neatly cut and neatly laid coins looks like a little treasure from a sunken pirate wreck. It's a pleasure to handle and rub these curls. And what a burst of deep aromas comes out of the fresh-opened tin! De Luxe Navy Rolls burn slowly, giving a cool and rich smoke redolent of rare luxury sorts of wood. What's important as well, the mixture is not shy in regard of Nicotine (which I welcome in any blend, as Nicotine is essentially what tobacco is grown and smoked for).

With all my respect to this refined aristocratic mixture, I must admit that what I not just respect but really LOVE in the world of VaPers is not this marvel of tobacco-spinning but SG's St. James, be that in Flake or Plug form: outright plebeian but much richer, way sweeter and noticeably bolder than this dry (as in wine) woodsy blend.

Four stars, anyway. Taste and flavour are of course the most important qualities in any pipe tobacco, yet style and presentation weigh something too. And here in De Luxe Navy Rolls style and presentation are just impeccable.

My benchmark VaPer. I truly love this blend, though, because of its relative high cost i only rarely indulge. It really is worth every penny, and im reminded of that every time i open a new tin.

Im not a hardcore vaper fan, because i have a mixed relationship with perique. I love the nicotine it imparts, but the flavor is one im tempermental with. Sharper, more peppery perique is not my bag. Dunhill navy rolls are exemplary of the sweeter, pungent plummy sort of perique that i enjoy. There is pepper here too. And the integration with the first class virginas is superb. The whole thing is on the sweeter side of the spectrum, and smokes extraordinarily coolly. It also takes a darker turn midbowl, and becomes a spectacularly deep, brooding thing of perfection. It is most certainly not the same product as Escudo. It is laughable to me to hear some describe ot as such. Highly recommended

Tin note is a slightly sweet & sour, fruity tobacco smell. I thought the tin aroma was awesome but like the Escudo scent better. Contents were a little moist, so, dry these coins out fairly well & you won't have to relight... smolders for a good while and a puff or two will get you going again. The taste is similar to other quality Va/Pers which are my favorite blends.

The silver dollar size coins are mostly dark with minimal yellow Virginia strands... counted about 26 coins in the tin. It crumbles easily even when a little damp which facilitates packing & provides an even burn. There are a minimal amount of small stems embedded within some of the coins but nothing to arouse concern... can be quickly separated. After four or five tokes, the vitamin N seemed to kick in pretty quick and provided a welcomed nicotine lift.

Escudo & Marlin Flake have been my regular selection when it comes to Va/Pers. Vintage Three Nuns was also a favorite of mine. I enjoy interchanging occasionally to employ a variety of slightly different flavors. I didn't like St. James Woods or Davidoff Medallions as well but they are also pretty good Perique blends... just a matter of taste. I'll be trying a sample of Stokkebye Bullseye Flakes on my next tobacco run to satisfy my curiosity with the additional Cavendish target. It might be a winner for me. I go for strength in a blend as well as flavor and this delivers.

This doesn't bite, tastes good to me & gets slightly stronger as you approach the finish. It leaves a light gray & white dottle & doesn't create a lot of moisture if properly prepared... a coin & a half will fill a #2 bowl & will provide more than enough smoke to satisfy any craving... unless one has become accustomed to something like Five Brothers or Picayune. The strength & burn rate is the same as Escudo, so, for the price differential, will stay with Escudo. Therefore, IMHO, I feel these Dunhill, Deluxe Navy Rolls merit four stars.

Tin note is heavenly, with notes of raisins and other dried fruit. I rub this out, after a brief drying time. I smoked a tin purchased from my B&M that had some age on it, based on some rust on the tin and the ridiculously low price. This older tin was wonderful, extremely rich, and fruity in a pure virginia/perique sense. The fresh tin was also great, but slightly disappointing based on my experience with the older sample. This indicates to me this blend will only get better with age, so I stocked up with 10 tins (on a rare sale) and continue to purchase as budget allows.

I can't comment on similarity to Escudo as I last smoked that weed 10+ yrs ago. At that time, early in my pipe smoking career, I found Escudo way too strong for me. I would rate Dunhill DNR's strength as slightly below medium, I assume due to my increased nicotine tolerance. I am puzzled by the range of strengths listed in these TR reviews that vary from mild to strong.

I would definitely recommend this to VA/Per lovers with a few years of pipe smoking under their belts. It has subtle VA sweetness but to me the savory wins out. It is much more refined than PS LBF, which I find too strong, harsh and slightly salty (Comoy's Cask No. 7 is a much better version of LBF, IMHO). I don't smoke DDNR daily but rather as a treat when the mood strikes. It will always be in my cellar. Give it a try.
