Peterson Sweet Killarney

(2.24)
A unique mixture of selected tobaccos including golden Virginia and black cavendish, topped with a cream caramel flavor. To make this wonderful tobacco even more attractive, it is blended with hand-rubbed Virginia flake which results in a fantastic aroma.
Notes: Due to EU regulations, this is now renamed and sold in those countries as "Killarney".

My first Peterson blend, a gift to my father which I've ended up sharing. First Impressions were very good, the seal was broken to reveal a lovely sweet aroma with a hint of caramel as promised. Lights easily when dried slightly and burns fairly evenly, although if anything a touch on the fast side. The smoke is slightly different to what an initial sniff would have you believe, with a lot of the caramel unfortunately lost in transit. The room note is fairly pleasant, akin to many other sweet aromatics without any dominant flavoring. The tongue burn which seems to bother many other reviewers is avoidable if the tobacco is smoked gently and slowly. Overall a nice tobacco and an enjoyable introduction the Petersons' range of tobaccos. It has certainly sparked a curiosity in me which will no doubt lead to a deeper dabble into the ptersons range. Reccomended for lovers of sweet aromatics such as Mac Baron Cube.

I know some people just want straight tobacco flavour and so no matter the quality of the tobacco, if it is ‘aromatic’ they will not like it. This tobacco is not for you. This review may not be for you either! I am very fond of unflavoured tobacco – about 2/3 of my all-time ‘favourites’ list and an even greater proportion of my current rotation is non-aromatic. But for some of us, sometimes it is nice to have a little extra flavour in your tobacco. On these occasions, Peterson’s Killarney hits the spot for me. It is a lovely and quite unusual mixture of ribbon cut and broken flake – you can really see the quality as well as taste it. In terms of flavour, Peterson definitely have a house style and this fits into that category – there is no doubt you are smoking a Peterson blend and a quality one at that.

In some parts of the world this is simply called Killarney and I think adding the term ‘Sweet’ to the name doesn’t do it any favours as it can lead to preconceptions. Yes, there is a sweetness to the blend but it is not like any of the ‘American’ style syrupy, goopy aromatics. Killarney tastes of tobacco – tangy and mature Virginias mellowed by the Cavendish and it is this that marries so well with the rounded Demerara sugar and gentle vanilla flavours added to this blend which run to a distinct creaminess in the last quarter of a small bowl; in a larger bowl I find the last quarter has an almost incense-like, slightly spicy quality to it. Very different and quite delicious.

The only drawback I have found is that the smoke can be often not quite as cool as I would prefer, however I have never experienced any bite. Ultimately, I find very little dottle and a fairly dry bowl at the end, most unlike most ‘sweet’ aromatics. You will be hard pressed to find anything finer if a light aromatic with a proper tobacco taste is what you are looking for.

Latelly i am in an aromatic blend mood.Peterson aromatic blends usually are heavilly cased and this one is no exception.once the tin breaks a wonderfull smell of cream and caramel comes out.a deeper smell adds some citruses and nuts.the blend has nice texture with some broken flakes included, high moisture and some drying time is needed because it can't be smoked as it is.after dried it packs and lights easy with some relights needed through smoking.while smoking i expected a taste consisted only from the flavouring but thats not true.virginias stand equally with the cavendish leading to a nice combination.the virginias are mostly citrusy and lemony working great with that cream caramel taste.i also got some alcohol notes.the burleys add some nice nuts and cocoa notes making the overall taste nice.generally the flavours combine well and natural leading to a nice smoking taste.burns at medium speed and hot to ash with some moisture being created at the filter.nicotine level is medium and the after taste pleasant.no tongue bite but if you puff fast there might be some harsh spots.the room note is very pleasant.generally i enjoyed this blend though it might ghost a pipe easilly.not an all day smoke unless you prefer highly aromatin blends.

One of my Saturday favorites! This sweet aromatic is my candy, I do have a sweet tooth and I enjoy the mild caramel taste and the light body of this tobacco. Must be smoked light and slow or it will give you some toungebite, but in my Jima pipe it works perfect.

Again Peterson hits the mark albeit mildly with a very pleasing aromatic blend. The tin note is frankly out of this world. You get caramel you get honey you even get a fudge smell. Light up was fine and first puff or two were really tasty. Things settled down a bit and the flavors started becoming very mild. Hints of honey and caramel and something that seemed like perhaps chocolate but these flavors are only hints. Peterson has developed some nice blends and this is another one. These are all very mild blends ment to be sipped not puffed. I find smoking with a P-lip stem makes the flavor and taste last a bit longer and remain cooler. This is a very pleasing aromatic blend that just about anyone can enjoy. By the way the smoke smells delicious so the wife may accept this blend in the house!!!!

Sweet Killarney? Uh-uh, Sweet Lord! What is this mixture of nastiness? Can't be tobacco?...can it? The pseudo caramel casing inundated my senses and it was like a vomitus coating of saccharine had plated my palate. I found nothing redeeming about this horrible mess. This is the worst aromatic I have ever encountered and it may very well have ruined my pipe. Time to break out the everclear, brush and about a dozen pipe cleaners. Blecky poo, Peterson, ewww! Nice tin aroma. Fruity and perhaps a bit nutty [burley?]. Always a hot burn. Lacks depth although a 'woody' taste becomes apparent as the bowl heats up. With little character, and a tendency to become a little 'bitey' I set this blend aside for some months and came back to it again tonight several hours after a pipe of Gawith Hoggarth Ennerdale Flake and confirm that Sweet Killarney is a nondescript aromatic that is no longer going to find space in my tobacco stocks. Try something else!!

A delightful tin note masks what is otherwise a flat, one-dimensional tobacco. Good for potpourri and tongue-bite. Peterson makes some fine blends. Unfortunately this is not among them.

I am very disgruntled by the common reviews on this blend.

I took these reviews in mind before smoking this blend and had low expectations. The tin greeted with a definite creamy vanilla aroma with the virginia being the other component. Translated exactly as such when smoked. The creamy vanilla being well balanced with the virginia and cavendish made for a mild aromatic that could be smoked all day. While being mildly flavoured, the sweetness purely relies on that of the cavendish.

A comforting smoke for a winters day best enjoyed on the porch with a cup of tea spectating the rising sun.

I should have learned from my experience with their Sherlock Holmes blend, but oh well. This tobacco has a wonderful caramel tin note. Other than that, it's pretty useless. The worst tobacco that I have ever tried by far. The first puff isn't so bad. After that, your taste buds become so steamed that you cannot taste anything. The room note was barely noticeable and nothing to write home about. I gave this tin away too (although it would have been a great potpourri just to leave out on the nightstand). No more Peterson blends for me. Lesson learned this time.
