I bought around 11 of the 1.5 oz boxed thermo sealed pouches around 1999 from a drug store that had them in a clearance basket for a dime each. These were made by Brown and Williamson. Wow, twenty years ago and I am opening one of these up. When I took the thermo sealed pouch out of the box it was hard as a brick. Upon opening the thermo sealed pouch I was met with a sweet and yet acrid tin note. After it aired out for a few minutes I inhaled again and detected what smelled like a faint Black Strap Molasses. I broke some of this course cut tobacco and put it in a cob and fired her up. It smokes cool, mild, and with a faint top note. Not a strong aromatic if you know what I mean. So, this is all Burley? I have smoked this for a few days with my morning coffee and you know something? For an OTC this is really good stuff. I don’t think aging this probably really matters and for the record I did not set out to do so. Time just has a way of accelerating. I mentioned thermo sealed pouch because I find humor in the oddest things and to me it looks and feels like aluminum foil but what sounds better? Not sure what the new stuff tastes like and since I have ten more of these, I won’t be buying any but give this one a try especially if you are fond of the OTCs. Over the Counter.

I hadn't smoked SWR in more than twenty years. I decided to revisit today. I believe something has changed for the better. A couple of decades ago I would have given Sir Walter two stars at best. I think the mixture now deserves four. Either my taste has changed drastically or Scandinavian Tobacco has up graded this product 100%! I love it. Good clean tobacco taste with a hint of brown sugar. What's not to like? Excellent burn rate,no souring toward the bottom, and no bite. I've been smoking this stuff like a madman all day so I feel secure in saying it ain't gonna bite you! I rate this a fire and forget smoke as it requires no more than two lights per setting. Paired with a hot cup of coffee it is truly one of life's simple pleasures. Go for it!

It feels so odd, after all these years of smoking the so-called aromatics, and eschewing the "codger" blends, that I've come down to Carter Hall and now Sir Walter Raleigh Regular, and also Lane Limited Ready Rubbed as my three go-to smokes, with SWRR a slight edge over the other two. This review is for the pouch, but on the strength of two pouches, so far, I've just ordered a full tub from P&C.

What is even more odd to me, is that the pouch note of SWRR was not all that impressive..less so than the SWRA, CH, or LRR, and I prepared myself to be disappointed. However, upon lighting (and it doesn't require too many re-lights), I was rewarded with a sort of woodsy, almost earthy, sweet molasses taste, that stayed consistent throughout the bowl...if anything, growing slightly sweeter toward the end. I didn't get too much cocoa taste, but didn't miss it at all. The molasses is sweet, gentle, never overpowering...just a delightful aroma that filled my senses with contentment. What a delightful experience, one that goes so well with anything in the Brandy, Marsala, Sherry families

As I've mentioned elsewhere, if you are chasing good taste and an all-day smoke that will wear very well, but if you are put off by the unfortunate description as a "codger" blend, then you owe it to yourself to try SWRR. I've found that while my tastes for the aromatics has not really diminished, I get all the sweet aromas I was looking for, coupled with gentle tobacco taste, wrapped up in a smoke that won't bite or burn hot. Top of my list so far, and 4 stars for a room-friendly smoke that will lead you back again and again.

I recently finished a pouch of this and I found it enjoyable but in a watchful kind of way. It’s easy to mess this one up. The first few times I smoked it, I made the mistake of chasing the phantom, puffing too hard trying to find flavor that was never really going to materialize.

For what it’s worth, I got the most out of Sir Walter Raleigh by setting it out to dry for at least 30 minutes and doing everything in my power to keep it from smoking hot. My best efforts were pleasurable smokes and my worst attempts, about three altogether, were not.

The granola cut is a mixture of course ribbon-like pieces and dense chunky bits. The flavor is quite subtle, a bit nutty and grassy, a touch of chocolate and a hint of booze. Altogether, I found this to be more earthy tasting than sweet.

Sir Walter Raleigh is mild and meant to be smoked slowly. Like others have mentioned, keep it burning on the cool side and a bit more flavor will appear. A decent enough mixture, it certainly has its charm.

This was the only tobacco my father smoked when I was young. That familiar black and orange can was next to his favorite chair always. I remember well the aroma in the house when he smoked it. I don't know what took me so long to try it myself but I finally did and I enjoyed it. Maybe not as much as my dad did but it is an enjoyable smoke, a no brainer so to speak. The tin note had a strong licorice smell and was mildly sweet. Packed easily with the dip and scoop method I watched dad use many times and it lit well but did need a few relights along the way. The burley was nutty and smooth but very mild. To me it was a little lacking in the flavor department. It wasn't bad but there are so many good burley blends nowadays it kind of pales in comparison. I guess the lack of alternatives available to dad years ago is what kept him loyal to SWR for so long. Now, with the Internet we have so many more choices I think I will leave SWR with a fond place in my memory banks and move on. Two stars for the tobacco with one more added on for dad.

For years I have been a tobacco snob ignoring any and all drug store tobaccos. However, SWR was cool, creamy, nutty and an absolute pleasure to smoke. In trying Sir Walter Raleigh I am forced to reevaluate my bias and conclude that some drug store blends are just darn good.

Soli Deo gloria!

Burley goodness, classic American. Very nice, an awesome choice for burley lovers. I can't believe it took me so long to try this little jewel, it's so delicious.

The pouch note is of nice pungent classic tobacco. First light doesn't show much, but it quickly develops a nuttiness and sweetness that I have not found in any other blend. I've been smoking this non stop since I discovered it and intend to do so for a while.

Don't listen to the negative reviews; they either don't like burley or were expecting the complexity of the tinned blends that cost an arm and a leg. If you are a tobacco snob then don't bother telling us what you think of it, we already know. If you want a nice, straight forward and enjoyable smoke and are a burley fan then give it an honest shot, it won't disappoint.

I'm going to give this 3 stars for being what it advertises to be - a true and mild burly. Want strength? Then you should never have bought this. That is not what its made for. For the price, its a winner if you like a mild burly that's not looking for a pretentious soul-searching experience. Its a rather uncomplicated, genuine, widely available, and affordable smoke that I don't have to pay $8.95 shipping for and wait a week to get. Also, it NEVER makes my pipe taste bitter. In fact, I use this stuff to neutralize some of the terrible after effects of some of the high-priced snooty brands I have mistakenly bought in the past.
