I recently purchased some Carter Hall to reminisce on the old days when this and Captain Black were the only tobacco's I could afford. CH has not changed at all..just your basic, pleasant, no frills Burley which is much more agreeable on the tongue than Prince Albert..which in my opinion is a step down from CH. I will keep this around for my corncob pipes...which I feel CH smokes best out of....also my advice on this tobacco is to avoid large bowls because it does tend to get bitter towards the bottom...the only resemblence to Prince Albert, fortunately.

Well, it?s pretty much been said: Carter Hall is an inexpensive, prosaic drug store burley ?fishin? tobacco? that is mild, one-dimensional, with excellent burning qualities that provides a cool smoke, tastes OK and is ideal for breaking in new pipes. In summary, I like this stuff.

A cigarette is to be smoked. A cigar is to be enjoyed. A pipe is to be savored.

I rate this tobacco 8.4 out of 10.

This is an OK tobacco. Its a rather mild burley blend with a somewhat nutty flavor as one would expect. There seems to possibly be some kind of topping, although I'm not entirely sure, and it is pretty light whatever it is, if in fact there is any.

This stuff is a bit too mild for me, and I prefer its competitor Prince Albert slightly over this, although either would do in a pinch if I was out of tobacco and could only find these blends.

Carter Hall seems to me to be an honestly good smoke. It definately isn't disagreeable, but its not particularly outstanding either. Bite factor is about zero with this, so you can puff like an infernal smokestack with impunity with this blend.

I have found that this stuff works well as a blending ingredient more than anything else. A bit of this added to a straight virginia will impart some nutty flavors and cool down the virginia somewhat. If you have a really bitey virginia that is giving you problems, try adding some of this or the prince to it to modify its smoking characteristics.

This tobacco isn't bad, and its allright to have some around in case you are in the mood for some easy puffing. Its a nice blending ingredient for modifying stronger tobaccos. For a couple bucks a pouch, I buy this once in a while if the spirit moves me.

For a long time, Prince Albert was my favorite maintenance blend for breaking in new pipes and smoking when busy doing stuff outside or around the house. Carter Hall was always my second choice because I preferred the flavor of PA more, but CH burned slower and seemed smoother. It packs easy, lights easy and burns clean all the way to the bottom of the bowl. Like PA, Carter Hall is a simple no frills burley with a very consistant flavor.

So, it seemed like a no brainer to mix them together. For sometime now, I have mixed Carter Hall and Prince Albert together in equal portions and thouroughly enjoy it. It makes a wonderful, simple, no frills all burley blend thats a great all day smoke. It burns so even and clean that there is virtually no pipe maintenance other than using the occasional pipe cleaner.

First of all I am tired of seeing manure references to various tobaccos. I would challenge any reviewer to try a pipefull of any tobacco vs. smoking various types of manures or other overused comparisons to bodily excretions. Carter Hall tobacco: A very tasty mild Burley tobacco. Make sure you put the pipe down when it gets too hot. I don't smoke this to the bottom as it gets a little bitter.

Carter Hall advertises itself as "A Distinguished Tobacco Mixture." I have smoked this on occasion with a certain amount of pleasure, but it has never been something I would seek out. For lovers of plain burley, it's certainly better than Prince Albert. For those with more refined palates, it has little to offer.

Ive been smoking a few "DS" brands lately and CH was one of the first. I too think this weighs in at the top of the heap for this style of blend. The ash burned right to the bottom with little effort in a variety of pipes. I have smoked about half of the pouch and will most likely pick up a can of this when I get a chance.

Nuttin' but Burley. Easy to pack and light. I rated this "smoke this on occasion", because this is exactly what I do. I use Carter Hall to build a cake in new or cleaned pipes. I guess you could say that it is my "maintenance tobacco". Nothing special about the blend, just a healthy smoke. You do get marvelous clouds of white smoke out of this blend. CH remains lit whether you smoke fast or slow. Fast will get you some tongue bite. I keep a large tub of Carter Hall around all of the time; it isn't fancy, but it can fix lingering tastes from trial runs of other tobacco in my favorite pipes. I also use CH in a Falcon for bass fishing at night. You don't really care if either the pipe or the tobacco is lost overboard. I would have to rate this 3 out of 4 stars. It really is my workhorse choice.

This is a nice all day smoke and great for beginners. I will smoke all of what I have, but will probably not get anymore anytime soon. It has hardly any taste, but what it does have is a nice, slightly sweet, tobacco flavor. Hardly any tongue bit at all. You really have to get this one going to get it to sting. Lots of compliments on the aroma. Started a long converstation on pipes. Not a bad tobacco, but not complicated in any way. Just a decent smoke that I wouldn't hesitate to get if nothing else was available. Smokes the pants off other OTC brands. Burns clean and a good cake builder.

UPDATE: I have been told that this smells like cigars. I noticed it too, but always thought iw was someone elses cigar I was smelling. I keep it around to build cake in a pipe. Doesnt take long at all to do that with this blend. Decent, reliable, cheep. Nothing fancy, but sometimes, you just dont want fancy.

I would not say that this is a smoke I have daily but almost. It is a wonderful inexpensive (but not "cheap") tobacco. It seems to be naturally flavored. I love the nuttyness flavor with the very slight sour touch. The aroma is pleasant to other as well. The first time I ever saw anyone actually smoking this was during the late summer/early fall while we played a round of golf. He smoke it during all 18 holes - non stop. Since then I have enjoyed it mainly during the colder months. But I guess it would also make a great all day summer smoke as well. I guess I'll have to wait several months to find out.

Everyone should try this stuff. It's inexpensive and very tasty. And best of all it come in an attractive "luxury pouch" as John Middleton, Inc calls it. If your a tobacco snobb just put it in one of your dunhill tins.
