Cornell & Diehl Vieux Carré

(3.00)
Whether you're visiting Jackson Square or walking down colorful Bourbon Street, the charm of old New Orleans is all around you, in Vieux Carre. Commonly known as the French Quarter, it is the oldest district in New Orleans, as well as the inspiration behind this Cellar Series blend, first introduced in July, 2016 — a traditional English tobacco with a flavor every bit as complex as the Quarter's own diverse atmosphere.

I am going to review this blend for what it is, NOT what it isn't. First off, it ISN'T a replacement for Frog Morton Cellar. So people who are looking for a substitute need to look somewhere else. It IS however a mild English style blend with an Islay Whiskey topping. The broken flakes rub out nicely, and packs with ease. The tin note is of peat from the Islay single malt, light smoke (from the Latakia) a little citrus/grassy notes from the Virginias, and to my nose, cherries, red wine or sweet vermouth, and of course whiskey. They could of easily have called this a Manhattan blend and served it in martini glasses! This blend smokes nicely with a room note of English smoke and sweet cherries. Even the wife commented that it smelled pretty good! Overall I really like this blend! The light cherry aroma works nicely with the smokey light latakia. The virginias balance the blend out and it is presented very nicely in the tin. I would recommend this to anyone looking for a mild english/aromatic as the topping gracefully fades away mid bowl. Very few re lights, and hasn't left any moisture in my pipe. Could be an all day smoke, however I tend to enjoy this blend on cool nights with two fingers of scotch.

I live in Baton Rouge, about an hour away from New Orleans. Saw the name and was curious if it would be possible to capture the spirit of the French Quarter in a tobacco blend? Really from the very start, I'd have to say that this actually does. Found it odd that there was no perique in the blend, as St. James Parish is not far from New Orleans and also, this contains English, Scottish, Turkish and Orientals, so where is the indigenous flavor? Even the whiskey is not Bourbon! I guess it lives in the deep subtleties and master blending of these ingredients into something that captures the spirit of a place that is itself as diverse and has layers of interesting qualities. Vieux Carre' is a wonderful looking product, delicate and fragrant slices that are so easy to pack and light. Behaves exceedingly well, and I have nicknamed it the "Big Easy"! I can't keep enough of this around, and I wish I could cellar some but I always end up smoking it! This is my personal favorite blend.

Awesome blend, I'm really curious to see how it ages. It's not extremely complex but it is solid in what it is. Whiskey flavor is barely noticeable nor is the Latakia but the Virginias shine and so do the Orientals. Stays lit well, smokes cool with no bite. The flavor is unusual with quite a bit of grass notes. I could see where some people might not like it but I certainly do.

I've decided to review to cellar series blends from C&D upon purchase (or thereabout) and after the recommended amount of aging to see the changes. I intend to update the review after that period of time has elapsed.

Now:

Tin note of peat, reminds me of Joie de Vivre. Over time (days of being opened) becomes lighter, more fruity.

The taste is earthy, woody. I don't detect flavoring at this age, really. I got a chocolate note late in the bowl, occasionally. Not complex, but shines in its simplicity.

You can watch my video review of this blend unaged here:

Aged:

Stay tuned.
