Cornell & Diehl Vieux Carré
(3.00)
Whether you're visiting Jackson Square or walking down colorful Bourbon Street, the charm of old New Orleans is all around you, in Vieux Carre.
Commonly known as the French Quarter, it is the oldest district in New Orleans, as well as the inspiration behind this Cellar Series blend, first introduced in July, 2016 — a traditional English tobacco with a flavor every bit as complex as the Quarter's own diverse atmosphere.

The brown Virginia provides a bit of ripe dark fruit and earth with a touch of citrus and a couple blades of grass. The lighter Virginia is citrusy with a hint of tartness and grass in a minor position. They form the base of the blend. The dry, woody, mildly floral and spicy, lightly buttery sweet and sour Izmir is an ever present supporting player. The smoky, woody sweet Cyprian latakia is a moderate presence that mostly underscores the experience, though there are times it does just a little tad more than that. It never competes with the other varietals as it tends to be a complimentary addition. The deeply rich whiskey does tone down the tobaccos a little with a sweet smoothness without overwhelming the tobaccos, making this lean toward being an aromatic English. No chance of bite or harshness even when pushed. The nic-hit is mild. The strength is slightly past the mild to medium level while the taste borders on medium. Well blended, it burns at a reasonable pace for a broken flake, cool and clean with a very smoothly consistent flavor from start to finish. Leaves very little dampness in the bowl, and requires an average number of relights for a cut of this kind. Burns to ash with little trouble. Has a very pleasant, slightly lingering after taste and room note. Can be an all day smoke.

The Lat is mild and soft allowing the other components to come through nicely. I don't mean to say that it takes a backseat, rather that it's soft nature doesn't hide the other components as some Lats do. It's a bit unique in that regard. It's mildly smoky and woody. The Orientals are mildly woody with a touch of sour butter. The Virginias are sweet hay with just a hint of fruit. I really can't taste the whiskey, perhaps because I dry mine very well. It's a pretty nice smoke that goes well any time of day, maybe even all day.
Mild to medium in body and taste. No added flavoring. Burns very well.

Broken flake with a boozy tin note. The flake breaks apart easily and burns cool. Tried this blend when I first purchased it and found it to be a very grassy Virginia forward blend. After almost two years I opened another tin and still taste the Virginia up front but it has blended nicely with the Latakia and oriental leaf. The top note does not really translate into the smoke, both taste and room note , but I think it helped harmonize the components. Not a ton of lat but a fair amount. The orientals open up mid bowl. Good stuff.

This blend as with many others the company releases these days is made with young tobacco. The marketing scheme of cellar series with a age of 10 to 15 years is actually brilliant but the reason for it is not . the reviews of boring or flat are simply due to the age of the leaf. I can actually smoke all of the cellar series and enjoy them as they are but they do occasionally show the youth the leaf has .
