Cornell & Diehl Vieux Carré

(3.00)
Whether you're visiting Jackson Square or walking down colorful Bourbon Street, the charm of old New Orleans is all around you, in Vieux Carre. Commonly known as the French Quarter, it is the oldest district in New Orleans, as well as the inspiration behind this Cellar Series blend, first introduced in July, 2016 — a traditional English tobacco with a flavor every bit as complex as the Quarter's own diverse atmosphere.

Cornell & Diehl - Vieux Carre (Cellar Series).

It's a broken flake that has a similar appearance to their Burley Flake #1, or Castello Fiammata: strips of flake. The moisture of it was bang on the money when I opened it, and as it's a decent seal on C+D tins I can't see it having done much breathing in the few months since the tin was dated.

The build makes loading a bowl simple, without the need to thoroughly rub: just pinch and stuff. And then igniting it's easy peasy. In the smoke I find the Latakia softer than is often the case. The Orientals share the flavour equally, until the last quarter where they overtake. The Virginia has the lesser weight of the three, giving a more subtle taste comparatively speaking. Although the whiskey isn't heavily added, it's presence is enough to lower the score: it lends a slight bitterness/causticity. The quality of the burn's good, and I get no bite.

Nicotine: medium. Room-note: I don't like it.

It isn't all bad, it's the whiskey that's responsible for two stars:

Somewhat recommended.

Meh. I was quite a bit underwhelmed by this to back. It seemed to be one that I would enjoy; a light English flake. However, much as I tried, I just couldn't get into it. Perhaps the latakia is actually too light (which wouldn't really make sense, as I enjoy GLP Piccadilly). Maybe the orientals are too light (this is definite). I'm not certain. I'm a Virginia fan, but the Virginia's in this mixture do nothing for me. I haven't figured it out after (begrudgingly) smoking the majority of the 2 oz tin. Topping? I know it's there, but can't figure out if it enhances or detracts.

I just can't wrap my head around it. All I can say is I don't like it. It's just so boring... It was hard not to give it a one star review, but I know the leaf to be quality tobacco. It's just not my bag, baby. So, two stars. I won't revisit this, though.
