Samuel Gawith Finest Kendal Twist Black XX
(2.18)
For over two centuries, the blenders and spinners of Samuel Gawith, Kendal, have been producing the famous Kendal Twists. Coal miners, both underground and on the ground, have been chewing our Pigtails, whilst pipe smokers have savoured the rich flavours and slow burning characteristics of the thick Brown No.4 and Black XX. All of our twist tobaccos can be smoked either flavoured or un-flavoured. Some of our popular flavours are black cherry, rum, whiskey and apple. All twists are available pre-packed or on the roll. Because the process is almost entirely by hand, quality control ensures consistency of excellence.
Notes: Pigtail - thin, Bogie - medium, Irish - thick.

Samuel Gawith - Finest Kendal Twist Black XX.
As many reviewers have said, this is a strong tobacco: I CAN'T inhale it.
At the start of the smoke I quite like it, the flavour's full but it seems okay: if I sip my pipe gently I get a mild smokiness with a pleasing sharpness. The problem arises if I puff harder: the amenable flavour becomes bitter, with a mild taste of liquorice in the background. It's fair to say, this takes the shine off it.
On the plus side, the smoke doesn't bite! That doesn't increase the rating though:
Not recommended.

This one is way too much stronger than anything else that I have smoked. I cannot have 2 consecutive pipes of it or the world starts to spin around me.

Once this settles in, it is an excellent smoking, sweet, pure tobacco. Much less sharp or edgy than Cockstrong or Picayune. Smokes clean and dry through the bowl. Floral essences wind their way through the smoke, along with an anise or licorice note. Very tasty. 4*.

Hello
is there anybdoy out there? My head is spinning and I feel faint. My pants are half off, and on backwards. I have a tattoo I don't remember getting. Boy I have a bruise on my head. What has happened to me? Yes, you too can feel this way when you smoke this really strong tobacco. Stay away from this stuff if you have a heart problem. The nicotene is powerful enough to knock the steam off a mule fart.

I smoke this only in the winter months. I find when ever I have a cold or one coming on a few pipes of this with some fine single malt seems to cure or drive th cold away. Albeit , I have to open the windows because even with the door closed my other half says the smell is overpowering. So I smoke in in Jan/feb with the windows wide open so the smoke will vanish into the ice cold air. But to me it is worthy of a "Winters Tale". If the Romans had had tobacco, this is what they would have smoked, when they pulled guard duty on the Scottish border on Hadrians Wall, while freezing their butts off in a wollen toga.

Strong..yes. But I like it. Nothing better than a Jack Daniels on the rocks and a bowl of "black death" as its sometimes called. But then again I've smoked straight perique and enjoyed it. Not for the timid.

Let me start with the apparent confusion over the name, there are a number of tobaccos with similar names emanating from SG and G & H, albeit they have reunited, and operate under the one roof now. This review is for Kendal Black Twist XXX, the X's denoting the diameter of the 'rope'. Purchased somewhat capriciously, and with a hint of obdurate willfullness, not to mention devil-take-the-hindmost, and now tried. The verdict; I will let the cut slice dry out next time. Cut slice (about 3mm thick) was pulled apart, the leaves teased out and torn, and gently rubbed, despite only softly packing the, now smaller fragments of leaves managed to obstruct the draw hole, and so were repacked with a spike protruding from the draw hole at the base of the chamber. As reported by others in that it did not readily take a light, I found this to be no problem, and whilst the twist is moist, it isn't overly so. That said I shall permit the tobacco to breathe, after rubbing out, for about half an hour before packing my pipe.
Strong, yes it most definitely is. It also leaves a taste on your tongue, again others have found this unpleasant, I can only say it is marginally distracting. It is however not a tobacco that will be in my daily rotation, two or three times a week will suffice. It does not bite, always a plus where I am concerned. Will it ghost the pipe I have used, this I suspect is possible. An update on this aspect will follow, dotage permitting.
Satisfaction; not entirely sure, however I have only smoked it the once so far, and will await the smoking of a few more bowls before judgement is passed. It is only my second foray into twists, the first being many years ago, the memories long lost to the fog of time.
I recommend pipe smokers to try this twist with the caveat that if you have a low tolerance of nicotine, then perhaps it is one best for laying down and avoiding.
With regard to ghosting I can unequivocally state this is a BIG YES. Note to self; purchase some cobs for trying new tobaccos.

Obviously very similar to the (in)famous regular Black XX, it's just as strong, just as dark. Only not being quite as harsh made me think it might be (slightly) different and have me tip the rating a bit higher. Strong, straightforward, be prepared for a ride!

I chewed Kodiak, Skoal and Gizzly for over 20 years.
This makes a much better chewing tobacco than pipe tobacco.
Smoking, 1 star. Chewing 3 stars. Huge nicotine hit either way.
