Sutliff Red Mature VA in this Bari saddle pot thinking about what a rollercoaster the carver probably rode. You see this grain, on both sides, and then...

I don't consider this natural scar as something bad. I don't know how it is considered for experts but for me is the kind of thing that makes the piece even more unique.

Same. I also like it because it means I got a 90% straight grain great smoking pipe for next to nothing.

Busy day today, preparing the outside of the house for painting. It’ll be the end of a process that has taken 2 years so far. I had to knock old plaster off and re-do it, then, apply a base coat. I’ll post pics when I’ve finished (hopefully on Sunday).

So, anyway, I’ve only had time for one bowl. And that one bowl is Sansepolcro - in the running to qualify as my current favourite blend. In a BriarWorks bent apple. Yummy! 😊

I'm curious about how you go about the painting. I owned a small painting company in Florida for a number of years. Can't wait to see the pics. 🙂

I’m using a cement-based paint made by Skalflex. It comes in powder form and you mix water with it, as you would with cement. It’s absolutely fantastic to work with, once you’ve mixed it. The main reasons I chose it are for its durability and breathability.

The entire job wasn’t straightforward, hence the 2 years timespan. A few years after moving into the house, (we’ve lived here for 9 years,) I noticed some rising damp in the front and East-facing walls. I deduced this was caused by the fact we have a thatched roof, which doesn’t have gutters and, therefore, allows rain to drip off after a heavy downpour. The ground was becoming saturated and there was insufficient drainage. The problem was exacerbated by the fact the two walls spent most of the day in the shade - the other South and West-facing walls didn’t have this problem. After consulting with a professional, my suspicions were confirmed. So, I had a trench dug along the front of the two walls and a pipe laid at the bottom of it, which takes water in and carries it to the drain. Then, as I said earlier, I had to knock-off the old plaster and apply some new, before picking up any paint brushes or rollers.

I’m on the final stretch now and the end is in sight! Pics will follow, once it’s completed 😊

Sounds interesting. Put in more than a few French drains in my day. Lol

The paint sounds like something I used in Florida with a house that had a similar problem. Worked good just had to make sure I put it to the thickness required. They adviced 5 mils.  Basically 3 coats.  I loved painting. 😁

The back at mid-afternoon. I’ve still got to plant the flowers, but I’m nearly there.

So, finally, I’ve finished. Two years after I began! 😄

The whole of the front of the house has been landscaped, with 86 tonnes of earth being removed and a gentle slope made to carry water away from the house. Drains laid. Old plaster removed. Replastered and painted.

The photo could’ve been taken in better light, but you get the idea.

Cheers, nach0! 😊

It’s the house I always dreamed of occupying. I’ve enjoyed every moment of the 9 years we’ve lived here. The house still needs some work: a couple of new doors and windows, plus a new thatched roof on the original building, (the extension doesn’t need it as it was only built 15 years ago). But, houses always need something doing on them! 😄

I was feeling in the mood for a classic American Burley for a change. I’m smoking LJ Peretti DD in a cob.

Sticking with the Peretti DD. It’s actually been a while since I dug into the codger burley types, I’m enjoying it.

At the moment, a one-bowl day means: Sansepolcro. I love it!

In one of my favourite pipes, a Savinelli 2023 Collection Billiard.

Trying out  Cornell and Diehl Steamworks in my Boswell Volcano. It's pretty good. Honestly though I like Bijou better. But Steamworks is definitely worth trying out.

Oh I forgot. An update on my total leaf order of organic orange va and the red VA. The orange va is gone. I cased it, I steamed it, and nothing changed so in the garbage it went.

The red va isn't looking good either. The more I tested it out, the more I'm finding characteristics that I'm not liking. Because of its almost rum and molasses characteristics though, I cased it with rum and molasses. It's still harsh. I'm going to try steaming some, toasting some, and my press some. If nothing helps, then it will be gone too.

That being said, I put in an order from leafyonly.com for some samples to test. I've learned not to buy so much without trying a sample first.

That’s too bad. I’ve only gotten quality leaf from Whole Leaf, others I’ve tried were not good quality.

Thats who I've used before and had good luck with. I'm giving leafonly a shot but I'll most likely end up sticking with wholeleaftobacco.com.

I should have mentioned that I have some orientals from Leaf Only that are quite nice. I just realized that I unfairly disparaged them in my previous comment.

I’m smoking my own blend in a vintage Stanwell HCA. I checked on the baby Robins being raised on top of my back door light earlier, thought I would share a photo of them. They seem to be doing well.

My cat is so fat that if something doesn’t come to her, she doesn’t really pay attention to it. 🙂

Mine attacks anything that moves. It doesn´t matter if it is an insect, a small reptile, a bat or a bird. She is a relentless hunter and she always brings me her prey, many times alive, so I can free them.

I've had in my whole life something around 6 cats in different moments of my life. The black one with yellow eyes was the most savage/wild and smart one. I miss all of them. Maybe i'll get another pet in the near future.

She is very big to be a female. She´s by far the most affectionate and cuddly, but is a devil with the rest of animals, including cats.
