Famous Pipe Smokers

Thought I'd kick off a thread of some notable pipe smokers (or perhaps notable people smoking a pipe).

I'll start with a personal favorite (and my profile picture), the great Leonard Cohen. Though we don't readily associate the poet and songsmith with the pipe, these pictures suggest he indulged through the years.

Will follow with another Leonard my pic is often mistaken for, Leonard Nimoy, or, Mr. Spock.

Obviously there are some icons inextricably tied to the pipe to get to, but just figured I'd get it rolling. I'll leave it for now with the whimsical Dr. Seuss.

Not often associated with pipes but still an avid smoker is Arnold Schwarzenegger.

As a Catholic myself, I would say it is Blessed Carl Lampert who was an Austrian Catholic priest! He was very devout, masculine, and magnanimous! He was a martyr and was killed via guillotine if I recall correctly.

(BTW, I am new here and have no idea how to include images)

Great topic idea! I’ll start with my profile pic, Basil Rathbone, a man whose acting has brought me countless hours of entertainment. If you’re not familiar with him beyond playing Sherlock Holmes, I recommend watching “The Comedy of Terrors” starring Vincent Price, Peter Lorre, Boris Karloff and of course, Basil Rathbone.

I am a huge Sherlock fan. Have been since childhood. Maybe an early influnce on my pipe smoking?

I feel the same way. I have no doubt that the Sherlock Holmes stories stoked my interest in smoking.

And Peterson IIRC has released a number of times a line of Sherlock Holmes pipes to commemorate Rathbone’s role as the pipe smoking deerstalker.

I will also add C. S. Lewis, along with his most famous quote on the subject.

We gotta mention J.R.R. Tolkien and his Capstan Blue, maybe William Faulkner with his Dunhill and Prince Albert, and perhaps Shelby Foote and his unique blend. Did all of the Inklings smoke?

Great reference! I was in a thrift store just today, where I bought another (I’ve had several) copy of Vol. 1 Fort Sumter to Perrysville. His wit and fascination are indispensable to American letters, I think, as well as his fresh and naturalistic analysis on the age old topic of the war. He was fond of billiards.

Okay I also bought a ‘73 Larry Csonka card for $2, and a bright blue and yellow fruit bowl from Spain. 😂 But Foote! Yes!

Mine as well. Cousteau embodied science and adventure combined in the spirit of the 18th and 19th century explorers but in modern times, well they were then at least.
