Dunhill Ready Rubbed (re-release)

(2.94)
Dunhill Ready Rubbed pipe tobacco is a mixture of mature, flue-cured leaves from the USA, Brazil and Africa are blended with sun-cured and smoky fired tobaccos from Indonesia and India. These are then pressed into cavendish and topped with a subtle flavour.
Notes: In addition to BB1938 and Three Year Mature, Dunhill Ready Rubbed is the third vintage Dunhill blend re-introduced to the U.S. market in 2015. Based on Virginia and Oriental, it's run through a light cavendish process, cased with a subtle fruity topping, and steam pressed before it's broken up into the beautiful ready rubbed cut.

Dunhill - Ready Rubbed (re-release).

I have no idea what the original Ready Rubbed was like so can draw no comparison; this is a review on this tin for what it is.

The initial opening reveals some quite rugged ribbons; I wouldn't suggest they're chunky enough to be classed as being 'broken flakes' but there's one or two that are chunkier than your simple ribbon or ready rubbed. The colour of the mixture is a very steady, medium brown; there isn't really any fluctuation in colour, lighter nor darker, it's very consistent. There's nothing spectacular to be reported about the aroma; it's a basic Virginia one. My tins moisture's good so I can smoke some right away.

The lighting's easy enough; no jet flame's required here! Then, once lit it gives a good burn that delivers quite a cool smoke that stays nearly bite free; it has to be chugged like a steam engine to get a very slight nip.

There are lots of good things about Ready Rubbed that jump out to me quite quickly: as I said, it burns well, gives a moderately cool smoke, has a fairly low nicotine amount (that suits me), and gives a decent enough room note. It's the flavour of the smoke that could be looked at in both a positive and negative light; it doesn't have much in the way of things that 'stand out' about it; it's not offensive, just a touch simple, thus making it a probable decent all day smoke when you don't want something to sit down and over-evaluate.

This sums up, for me, the word 'boring'. I'd prefer to have more going on in the smoke. This is why I can only somewhat recommend it.

Two stars.

Tin note is of medium intensity grassy and mildly tangy with some sweet and creamy fruity notes as well which dissipated until the tin finished. Quite nice. It comes in well broken flakes which can be smoked as they are without further rubbing but a little drying could help.

Needs to be sipped otherwise it will get hot and a little harsh. But when sipped it offers a nice sweet mildly tangy and floral (probably from the Orientals) tobaccoey smoke with notes of the rather green citrusy flavoring. Before seeing the ingredients I would have thought this was a straight Virginia with a mild flavouring. But after reading about the Cavendish - the unflavoured English type - I think I can sense it as it imparts a smoky tone. Though the tobacco is not a cornucopia of flavors it’s not monochromatic either. Flavour intensity is medium as is nicotine content. And it behaves quite well without need of many relights.

Yet I find that the flavouring somehow distracts from the tobacco taste. It tastes a little bitter or acrid and a little chemical - this is my main problem with Ready Rubbed. And this is more evident when smoked after a straight tobacco. Otherwise it could be an all day tobacco. When no fresh comparison is made I find Ready Rubbed more agreeable. 2.5 stars from me.

During the last couple of weeks, I have smoked one tin each of these three blends. At the end, I’m pretty torn about which is the correct rating they deserve. And will go for the two stars.

All of them have a beautiful cut and the most correct dampness. All of them smoke cool and I’ve not experienced any biting. All of them need a dose of attention, just because the rushed smoke cause some undistinct or even bitter flavour.

These three virginias form a sort of scale, where Ready Rubbed is the mild-to-medium step, TYMV the medium, YOS the medium-to-strong. RR shows a well behaved fruity character. TYMV shows a milder fruit counterbalanced by a spicy tone. YOS shows a drier and mildly woody/cigarish tone. This latter is the one I prefer over the other couple.

I have never smoked their predecessors, and don’t want to sing the same old song of how Dunhill’s were in the days of yore. In my opinion, today the basic elements are just average quality, sure no boutique baccy. If they were sold at average prices, I would for sure smoke them often, because they are easy and pleasant. But that is not, therefore my choice goes elsewhere (Gawiths, just to make one name).

Will the production of Dunhill’s tobaccos cease ? I don’t see what’s to mourn about, but the memory of my smoker’s youth.

Classic-elegant tin label. Tin nose is mainly bread and yeast. I cannot smell any Oriental. Neatly and evenly presented Ready Rubbed tobacco, almost like a medium-fine Ribbon Cut. Gorgeous golden colour. A feast for your eyes. All high Dunhill standard. The moisture out of the tin is ok for me. Since our American pipe friends usually prefer drier tobacco than Europeans, you may allow a short drying time.

Excellent smoking conditions. But mind you: neither draw to eagerly, nor smoke too hot, or the moment of revenge has come, in the form of harsh-acrid tastes and the well-known Virginia bite. Otherwise it is a mild, rather pleasurable and tasty smoke.

To me this new release of DUNHILL READY RUBBED is a straight Virginia Blend, not an Aromatic like the original one definitely was. Although I cannot single-out the Orientals, they may certainly be there and provide some hidden spice and enhance the mixture’s taste. As far as I am concerned it’s all about Virginias and some topping. The added flavours are gentle and marry up really well with the Virginias. It’s a kind of fruity casing, which I am not able to specify. They did a good job on this, because I am normally scared off by artificial flavourings.

I have never been a fan of straight Virginia blends, even less, when flavoured. I prefer heavy English, Balkan and Perique mixtures. But, DRR is somewhat recommendable as a light all-day smoke.

Never had original. Smoke a full tin here. Bright Virginia leaves. More body than straight Virginia. Can't taste Turkish, but that must be involved in the added strength. Orange and honey sweet but not near the top. Not wet or hot. Not as sweet to me as Capstan.

A Little too spicy for a quiet English-aromatic. Enjoyable on occasion for mild-medium sweet smoke with some extra body. Quality leaves and mix.

I’ll start by saying that if I had to base my rating on just one bowl I probably would have given this three stars. But over time, as the top note has faded, some issues with the underlying tobaccos have become apparent. So, firstly, the added flavoring. I’m fairly certain this is the same sauce used in the Three Year Matured, only here it is about three times as strong. Specifically, the apricot note, which jumps out right when you first pop the tin. No, I wouldn’t call this a full-blown aromatic, that is evident if you compare it directly against a true aromatic, like I did with East India Officer’s Club. So yeah, this is definitely more in the semi-aromatic category, where one can still discern natural tobacco.

Unfortunately, the natural tobacco tastes I discern, sourced from Africa, India, Indonesia, are not of the highest quality. This is probably why they went so heavy with the fruit topping, to hide what lies underneath. When fresh, these faults were not as apparent and I got flavors of light brown bread, and a suggestion that a liquefied concoction of anisette and toasted poppy seed may have be used in the tempering sauce (aside from the added apricot flavoring). At this point just a mildly boring blend suitable for a quiet Sunday morning. But this honeymoon, unexciting as it was, didn’t last long. Although the apricot never completely fades away, more of what lurks underneath comes to the surface: really strongly grassy chlorophyll and a faint vegetal bitterness that I finally pinned down to fennel seed and radish. As I said: substandard leaf.

I suppose RR would be an average All Day smoke. The cut combines partially rubbed - out flakes with Ribbon cut, which makes it ready to be packed in the pipe without much further rubbing out. The citrus casing was still present in the tin note and in the taste as well as a discernable spiciness offered by the Orientals. The tobacco had not darkened much over time. Overall, a rather pleasant tobacco but which lacks depth of taste which was a bit surprising considering the tin was 5 years old.

I do not taste the orentials as they are an afterthought. The Virginias seem to lack any age. This can be bitter if pushed. Nic hit is below medium. I think this would be better if cellared for a few years. Didn't ring any bells for me. Happy Smoking- Lager (formally budman)

A fruity smoke, due in large part to the topping. The Virginias dominate with some fruitiness of their own as well as later notes of bread and earth. The Orientals give an occasional sour note. The Burley can only be identified through a nondescript bass note. Has a slight harshness on the retrohale. The best feature is the persistence of the topping which lasts till the end. 2 stars.

Mild to medium in body and taste. Flavoring is mild. Burns very well.

Neutral and natural. In my opinion in this blend you can taste a real tobacco taste. No sugar, no flavoring no topping. However this mixture is lacking in taste, the virginia is poor, with a weak taste. Insufficient personality and no complexity. So, from the side of the purity, of the natural tobacco, this blend is ok and the score is three stars, but from the side of the taste in my opinion the score is only two stars (the average is two stars and a half).
