Rattray Terry Red
(2.31)
A pleasant blend of light Carolina, Virginia and black cavendish. Rum, ginger and cherry gives a mild flavor for everyone will enjoy. This mixture burns very well and dry in the pipe.

I just could not get into this blend. It simply has no flavor to me! Tried it right after opening the tin, tried again a couple of days later, then a few weeks later. Never got any better or worse just sort of tasteless, smelled alright in the can and in the room. Rattray has some great tobacco, this just isn't one of them to me.

Unlike some of the other reviewers, I like this blend. It has a nice taste and tin aroma. I canned most of a tin to age.
I thought the cherry taste was subtle at best. It's not overwhelming, yet it gives a hint of sweetness to the taste buds. I would recommend this blend to the occasional aromatic smoker and the aromatic smoker looking for something a bit different.

An unremarkable blend from this otherwise fine blender.

Unsmokeable garbage !
This is as bad as the worst drugstore blends.
One can only hope that Charles Rattray is being properly chastised in the afterlife for inflicting this ignitable abomination on mankind.
Gee Nick, What do you really think of it? :^)

Say whatever you will about aromatics, or cherry flavored types of tobacco, but they have their place in society - when there are those around who deplore all types of smoke. Among the genre of this kind of an aromatic, this one is pretty good. Not great, certainly not bad. Just...pretty good. Like many aromatics, it burns hot and damp. It can bite you some if you oversmoke it, and will also get bitter. I compare this with Peterson's Sunset Breeze, another aromatic of good quality leaf. The aroma of this isn't quite as sweet, to me, but it's still extremely pleasant. This serves a role to me - and while it will rarely be enjoyed, during those times when people around you will need to be pacified, this blend will do it. Above all else that could be written about it, the room note is awesome.

I have never been a fan of "cherry" tobacco's. In fact I have always been surprised by the popularity of blends like Middleton's Cherry, etc., as the mixture of fruit/tobacco just does not appeal to me. Rattray's Terry Red not only changed my opinion but has been a stable of my regular rotation for several years. The flavor is excellent and is greatly complimented by the Ginger top notes. Furthermore, the aroma is very pleasant yet not overpowering. One of my complaints with "cherry" tobaccos has also been the overpowering aroma that accompanied them. Not so with Terry Red. I have received frequent compliments from others on the aroma. This is also a very good indoor smoke when around other non-smokers. In my opinion I suggest smoking it in a mid-sized bowl. This tobacco does not do well in small bowls as it burns too hot for my taste. If you stay away from cherry tobacco blends and prefer a good latakia blend like Dunhill's Early Morning Pipe or a strong burley flavored blend like Half & Half try this and you may see it fits surprisingly well amongst your other favorites.

Given the fine pedigree that the Rattray's tobacco family has, I found it "gutsy" to produce an aromatic blend. But when it was formulated, it was done so with intellegence and creativity. What called me to this blend was the merging of the toppings. How could a manufacturer do justice to Virginias,Carolinas and Black cavendish by giving it a topping of Cherry,Ginger and Rum? So being the tobacco adventurer that I am I jumped headlong into this tobacco with some reservations..So here goes....
Upon opening the tin I could detect a subdued cherry note and the snap of Ginger. The moisture level was a little high. So aready in my mind I was recalling the equation of Moisture + Aromatic Blend= Tongue bite. But not so... At initial lighting, the cherry and ginger fought for attention, but that was very short-lived.Things settled down nicely. The ginger gave the cherry a tart "dry martini" type of character, with the rum keeping down the subdued bass notes along with the natural sweetness of the Virginia and Black Cavendish tobaccos. No tongue burn. Packed nicely and lit fairly well even with the moisture content. Stayed lit and burned down to a fine mottled ash which poured out of the bowl cleanly at the end of the smoke. My only negative here is I could not smoke it as an all day smoke. However as a morning smoke, it would segue nicely into later day smoking of perhaps an English blend or a dark Virginia Flake mixture. Also no heavy after taste was noted. This was the maiden smoke in a new Butz Choquin calabash. So with a large gaged bowl and no previous adulterations to help it along, Terry Red was left on it's own island so to speak.. It was true to itself, and was pleasant..Good job Rattray's...

Terry Red - The can I cracked I think was dried out a bit...which catered to a little different smoking experience with this one that perhaps some of the others. I found that the Rum, Ginger and Cherry flavors were only found in the tin aroma but hardly detected by me in the smoke. It packs and smokes very well but is bland to me. A bowl of Terry Red is just a so so smoke from my sampling. First of the Rattray's to try, for me, I will continue to find something better in this family of tobacco...eventually...for now I have Terry Red and Charles Mixture here to sample...looking forward to Old Growrie and some others.

Very similar to some Amphoras and pouched Larsens: it's not very sticky for a cased aromatic, and in the tin it has an OK moisture level. It's OK stuff if you like the genre, but why spending so much when there are several cheaper aromatics with the same (lack of) taste? It's a bit nutty, a bit sweet, and turns slightly sour after mid-bowl, altogether unsatisfactory. It will bite your tongue, so beware.

I had a different experience with Terry Red than some of the others. I should point out though, that mine was very well dried. In addition to cutting down a lot on the tongue bite of blends of this type (aromatic), I find that it also reduces the degree to which the casing overpowers the tobacco.
Terry Red, to me, had a nice middle-of-the-road flavor. The toppings were toned down by drying to the point that the ginger was subtle, the rum was a trace, and the cherry was undetectable. The toppings seemed to compliment the flavor of the Black Cavendish, and while it was not apparent on its own, the Va seemed impart a bit of natural sweetness, reducing the ?dry wine? taste I get from Black Cavendish.
TR isn?t a complex blend, but rather a nice change of pace from my usual fare, which is heavy English and Va - Va/Perique. If you have tried it and didn?t like it, try drying it a bit and see if this doesn?t help a bit. It worked for me.
