Well, this makes out Old Hornblower to be a toothless old geezer. Not the finest pipe-weed in the Shire, me thinks.
Nothing really bad here, just mild and boring as milk toast. So, without noticeable flaws I can't go lower than two stars. But nothing really great or distinctive either, so can't go higher than three stars. Kind of falls into that dreaded middle ground with so many other hum-drum generic blends.
Has a smooth nutty flavor that reminds me of a Nutty Buddy (waffle cone, vanilla ice cream, chocolate covering, chopped nuts). There is also something in it that reminds me of Butternut Burley (not a fan of that either). I didn't get much contribution from the Perique which could have spiced things up more.
If you like mild codger blends this may float your boat more than it did mine, but that's not what I expect from a specialty producer who has a portfolio with much more interesting blends to choose from.
I tried resuscitating poor Old Toby with some Five Brothers, some dark-fired, or more Perique, but in the end he just didn't have the will to go on. I've therefore rounded down my score to show my disappointment. But like I said, there aren't any real flaws or imbalances here. Just boredom and naptime in the Shire.
