Rattray Accountant's Mixture
(2.79)
Dark and full-bodied without harshness. Great for outdoor smoking. Many strong mixtures are harsh and stringent; Accountants Mixture is truly an outstanding exception.

I've just finished my first tin of Accountants Mixture and found it to be a very pleasing smoke. I was surprised to find it contained Cavendish tobacco as I don't detect any of the sweetness you ususally get with all the Cavendish tobaccos I've tried so far. I particularly like the subtle use of Latakia, it's not so overwhelming as you get in some other blends. It reminds me of Dunhills' Early Morning Pipe tobacco as that blend uses a subtle amount of Latakia. I've really taken to this blend and will buy more. I fing Rattrays to be fine tobaccos and would recomend them all (at least the ones I've tried). I can't think of anything bad to say about this blend except the wife hates the smell and wont let me smoke it anywhere near her. This is now one of my favouites and I'd put it in my top three. I like strong tobacco and this has the flavour of a strong tobacco with out being too much. I could happily smoke this all day. Highly recommended.

Great smoke when you want to change things up some. I couldn't smoke this all day, just because I like to smoke in a rotation. But this is a great smoke if your going to sit outside and gaze up at the stars or have a really good conversation with a good friend or a lover. A little bit of tong bite if you get it too hot (but that's more an individual experience - what one person experiences another may not). Defiantly worth a try if you like Latakia. So far from my own experience my palate tends to like more Virginia and especially Latakia heavy blends. I used to smoke cigarettes for 20 years, then changed to cigars for about half year, and then to pipes. The latakia has a little bit of a spicy taste to wake up your palate yet it's sweet enough at the same time not to overpower the palate.

The description of this blend is rather ambiguous. It is, however, correct. It is dark and full-bodied. It does seem to lack harshness. It leans toward the darker, virginia flaavors. It has sweetness, zestiness, and richness. The latakia adds a leathery smokiness. Other orientals, if present, are not evident. I expected a powerful, dark, balkan type tobacco. I was surprised, but surprisingly so. This is an excellent tobacco. It achieves what McClelland's seems to strive for, but often fails to accomplish.

This is another one of the three Rattray's offerings in my regular rotation. I believe this to be similar to Professinal Mixture with more strength and a touch more Latakia and unsweetened Black Cavendish.
Again, this delivers a wonderful flavor and pleasant room note rather than the some of the other English styled blends that can be rather astringent. While it does do well outdoors, I confidently reach for Accountant's after a meal and reserve other more rustic coarsley cut blends for outdoor duty.
Accoutant's delivers subtle complexity in a narrower range and my experience is that 90% of the bowl hums a beautiful melody all its own, and for me ... that's the attraction. It's very reliable and consistently excellent quality. It always holds my attention.
This blend, Professinal Mixture and Jocks Blend are the Rattray's trilogy in my rotation. Excellent!
Cheers, VC
