If the new Fed. Regs. were not to take this one away soon, I would say this one I could survive on alone. It is the best predominately burly blend I have ever experienced. I like CH also, but if CH were a Toyota, then CM would be a Lexus. I believe there is a bit more VA in CM, but for me the biggest difference is how smooth, refined & reliable it is. Always very enjoyable, and the easiest I have ever experienced to qualify as an all-day smoke. Even though I indulge only a couple of bowls weekly. It stays cool and bitless, even when drawing at your hardest. Although it is delicious all the way down the bowl, it does seem to pick-up on the flavor delivery after the half-way point. If Russ' intentions were to make this a Carter Hall match, then he really screwed-up by going way to far. This is my favorite baccy, even surpassing Uhlie's Blend 00. Creamy hints of cocoa & nuttiness may dominate, but every once in a while late in the smoke a very slight mintiness shows up for me. What a shame this one is going in soon. If I were Hearth & Home I would pay-up for this one! Hint, hint!

I was dubious about this blend when I first heard of it. Even with Russ' magic touch, I wasn't sure he would be able to replicate my favorite OTC.

I was right, but that's not a bad thing. This blend takes what I like about Carter Hall and improves it just a little. The smell and appearance are dead on, and the flavor is very similar. If you told me this was Carter Hall I might believe you, just thinking I got a particularly good batch.

Well done Russ!

Love this. Close to CH in many ways but it has a unique character all its own. Pouch note is mildly sweet with some cocoa and molasses. Lights well and burns effortlessly to the bottom of the bowl. Hints of chocolate and nuts and a brown sugar sweetness are evident throughout the medium bodied smoke. Cool and smooth with no bite. It's a classic Burley blend at an excellent price. Well done Russ.

Solid blend but not as good as advertised. It tastes like what it is burley and red Virginia. The red Virginia and burley are very well balanced and the addition of the flavoring is very lightly done and adds a chocolatey, nondescript sweetness. It’s good but not my favorite. If you like red Virginia then you’ll probably like this. It does burn very well and I had few relights. For me it’s so well balanced to a fault because it lacks any sort of character. I enjoy the sweet cask more because even though the flavors are lighter and more subtle it has more character in my opinion. Next stop for me is chestnut in the mid town series, I’m very excited about that one!

First tried this several years back, when it first came out and didn't really care for it probably because I smoked so much Carter Hall and felt it did not compare. Fast forward to now and I smoke it quite a bit. This is an enjoyable mild all day smoke that burns well, smell nice and tastes great. Maybe my tastes for burleys has changed or I just like different things now but I do recommend giving it a try.

I agree with most of the other reviews. Chatham Manor isn't remotely similar to Carter Hall but it stands ok on its own merits. I could taste nothing but chocolate and, in that respect, it would be a good match to Sir Walter Raleigh Aromatic except it doesn't bite as readily as SWRA. It smokes cool and dry down to light gray ash with no chemical taste. It is monochromatic compared to Carter Hall's complex taste but, at $24 per tub it is a much better value than the plastic bags of chemical soaked cigarette tobacco sold as pipe tobacco.

At first, I did not like it. For some reason, I was expecting an aromatic. So, naturally, I was disappointed.

After I was educated as to what it really was, it was very nice. It’s funny how your brain can play tricks on you.

There was a slight cocoa flavor with a mix of Burley and Virginia. It burned very well, and had no bite whatsoever. I also used it to mix into other blends. It went very well by itself as well as mixing. Of course, I haven’t had Carter Hall myself, so I can’t compare the two. But this on its own is very nice

The most American burley aromatic I've had so far. Once again scoop and go. More aromatic on the first half of bowl. Just medium strength on second have. Flavorful taste and aroma. Also received a pouch of Carter Hall which I will try later.

So I tried this tobacco a while back and found it agreeable. It is a very mild blend that has a nice vanilla note to it. It lit easily and took minimal relights. In addition to the vanilla, I tasted some grasses. No nicotine was detected, and there was no bite or harshness. Everything considered, a great blend.

Bulk purchase. Arrives a bit more moist than I had expected. I've dried it out a little, a lot and not at all before smoking. I like it a bit more dry but it is smokeable straight from the bag. The cut is ribbon with some long shreds and short pieces.

Aromas of bourbon, vanilla, cocoa and some vinegar. The cocoa is more chocolate than raw cocoa. Lots of sweetness in the pouch note. The bourbon is in the background.

Packs well and takes the flame well. First flavors are chocolate and bourbon. The vanilla waves in and out. The chocolate loses the sweetness in the first half and is more cocoa. The Burley is somewhat nutty and a tad earthy. The toppings are the main flavor players.

The room note is sweet chocolatey and is quite nice. The body is thin. The strength is mild. The nicotine is very low in my opinion. I feel like this can bite if smoked like a freight train.

Overall this is a very simple blend and is easy to smoke. Probably a 2.5 star blend but I'll round up to 3 stars
