Peterson Irish Whiskey
(2.74)
A traditional Irish ready rubbed blend renowned for its smooth smoking quality. This blend incorporates various selected Virginias to provide roundness of taste. Kentucky fired, Indian cured and aromatic Thai Burley are also added. Finally, a light spray of Irish Whiskey essence gives this tobacco its unique aroma.
Notes: Due to regulations this is now called "Irish Mixture" in the EU.

The funny thing about this tobacco is that, although I'm not a burley man, I quite like IW. It's been in my rotation now for at least 12 months and I still did not get tired of it. It's quality tobacco, it's a pure and honest tobacco and it tastes like TOBACCO should. Although I believe it's flavoured with whisky, I can't taste it. There is a bit of sweetness, which as a virginia fan, I like. No tongue bite, easy to light and burns evenly right through to the bottom of the bowl. All in all it's the kind of tobacco any piper should have in his/her collection.
Edit 27/05/2014: I've spiced IW with about 30% granulated perique and now I have one lovely tobacco!

Now, I'm somewhat new to pipe, 10 months, but this blend seams a little...rough? I was expecting a little more flavor and a more pleasant room note.
When I opened the tin it smelled delicious and had a heavy nutty smell. My wife loves that smell so that's great but the smells changes so very much when smoking. It however dose not burn too hot at all if smoked leisurely.
As I said the taste is not really a whiskey taste which is disappointing. I love Irish whiskey so much but it, to me, had no taste of whiskey at all but it's not way too bad.
All and all, I may get it again and mix it with my Irish cream blend.

I really enjoyed this one. I am not really sure if I even picked up any taste of whiskey at all, but I am sure it was there. If you are looking for a lot of whiskey flavor I think this could leave you disappointed. This, to my tastes was sort of like an Irish Flake Light. Although I didn't enjoy it as much as IF, I did prefer it to University Flake.
To me it is just a fine tasting burley blend. If I had any complaints it would be that my pipe tended to get a little hot and gurgly, but that could just be the pipe I smoked it in. I usually reserve it for mild aros. Definitely recommended to the burley lover.

Some of the reviewers warn beginners about the strength and spiciness of this mixture a, but if you’re looking for a step up to a bolder blend, this might be a good start. STG does a good job on this one with the burley and Kentucky giving the smokey almost Oriental balance to a very good Virginia’s that always seems to come from a tobacco with Peterson’s name on it. If I didn’t know better, I would have guessed a little Perique in the blend, but it isn’t there. Smokes cool , doesn’t bite and a veteran could smoke this all day as this is a darn good blend. I have a few blends with the Peterson’s name from a few different makers and this will be on my regular rotation when I can get it. I’m glad the whiskey flavor is almost nonexistent and adds just the right amount of maltiness to raise up the natural sweetness of the Virginia. I give this tobacco a solid 3+.

Excellent mixture! The Virginia, Burley and Ky play well together. Probably not a blend for those who don’t like too much Vitamin N. I find it a little past medium in this smokers pallet. Whisky is a very minor player but is there. Some sweetness I think from the Va. Pairs well with a strong Irish tea with a wee drop of whisky. This is one of my go to blends on a cold winter afternoon!

Oh no. Ooooh nonono.
Irish Whiskey (Or Irish Mixture, as it's called here) is currently my least favourite tobacco blend out there.
Now i like some strong tobaccoes. I enjoy Irish Flake, for instance. I also quite like Samuel Gawith's Black XX Rope cut or Mac Baren's Acadian Perique. I enjoy a number of latakia-laden english blends as well. My point is, i do appreciate proper tobacco connoiseur's blends.
What i don't like is cigarettes. I used to smoke those, then i discovered the wonders and joys of pipe smoking, and i've not looked back since.
Some may think less of me, but i'm also not a big fan of alcohol. I just can't seem to enjoy it. It makes me feel ill and it all tastes of paint thinner to me. The only way i can appreciate the stuff is in eggnog or mulled wine or such.
Now, when i first sampled this blend, and recoiled in horror.
I'm going by memory here, as there's no force in the universe that could make me smoke more than the couple of bowls i had of this stuff, but i do recall the flavour quite vividly. It tasted exactly like someone took a cigarette and sprinkled it with alcohol. Presumably whisky.
A high quality cigarette, i'll grant you, but a cigarette nonetheless. That's absolutely not what i want to see (or indeed, taste) from my pipe blends.
If that does somehow sound appealing to you, i will say that i remember it burning quite well and very cleanly indeed. It did get rather harsh, but that's hardly a suprise considering the flavour. I don't remember it biting, however.
So yeah, bottom line, i despise this blend. Granted, i'm probably the last person who should have tried it, but hey, there's value in having reviews from different perspectives, no?
I feel a bit guilty about doing this to a Peterson blend, but well, no point in a review if it's not my honest opinion. Besides, i'll make up for it when i get around to reviewing the vastly superior Irish Flake and University Flake.

Quite good compisition to give some body (I appreciate the amount of Kentucky). The most intense aromatizant is whisky, obviously, with a little of honey or something like this - at the end, whisky disappears. It's a good quality tobacco, but I like other types of Burley-based (surely, Rattray's Stirling Flake, or other more natural).

Bought a tin of Irish Whiskey on a whim, thinking it would be a flavorful aromatic... Well, I should have looked it up first, because it is definitely not what I expected! The tin note was pungent and plum-cakey, not unpleasant, but I couldn't detect a trace of whiskey. This is a strong burley blend with a big vitamin N hit. Not for the faint of heart. All in all, I enjoyed the blend, but it was not particularly memorable. I look forward to trying more Peterson blends, but I don't think I will be acquiring any more of this particular mix.

I'm gonna keep it short.Got a 6 months ago a tin of IW.Opened the tin Nice nutty aroma from the Burley, but no whiskey. When I reached half bowl the whiskey flavor came in,lingering adding a nice sweetness.Kentucky is giving strenght and body. Not for the beginners.Good vitamin N level.I would say it's not a aromatic just straight juicy Burley based blend with suble whiskey casing.Bought today a another tin.Nice change after longer period with heavy English latakia blends. This blend is good with morning coffee or at the evening with a glass of malt.Recomended
