Peretti Original Mixture
(2.86)
Here is one of our real old favorites once again available. A rich full-flavored aromatic blend, medium strength, slow burning and cool smoking.
Notes: The name of this tobacco is not entirely accurate. The original “Original” is no longer produced due to the loss of an English blending component. This burley based blend has a distinct blend of two aromatics in the subtlest proportions. The combination produces an enchanting room note and a deep taste profile. No Cavendish, no casings, just flavor.

This is indeed a full flavored aromatic Burley blend. It comes in Peretti's typical cube cut. It burns very slow and cool and is an absolute cinch to pack: Dip pipe into tobacco and fill, press gently, light.
The flavoring comes on very strong at first. It is cool, floral, herbal and sweet. I have no idea what it is, but it tastes good and smells beautiful. The first time I tried this it was just too intensely flavored for me. However I find myself craving it from time to time, so I'll try to pick up some more.
There is no black Cavendish in this blend. It is simply top notch Burley, a hint of Virginia, and some natural essence. It is not sticky, nor is it wet. A really nice old fashioned full aromatic. The flavoring tones way down about half way into it, but never dies out completely. Then the tobacco comes to the fore. It is toasty, nutty, and all in all, superb.
A very pleasant surprise for me. However, I am sure there are many who would hate it. It is very different from the typical candy smokes passed off as aromatics. This is actually surprisingly complex. Highly recommended as a change of pace for the aromatically inclined.

This brings back memories from my first experience with pipes. That would be back in the late sixties. Even by then the quality drugstore burleys were gone but you could find some from years before. This is actually what 1930s pipe smoking tasted like in the US. Its burley with old school flavorings (im guessing tonka bean, maybe some deer tongue, anise and likely something else or two.. lavender maybe, or lilac. ) If you have ever tried real snuf...almost nobody makes it now....this is how much of it is flavored. Its actually very good, not sweet really, but rich and the burley is top notch as it always is with Peretti. Nicotine level is medium....a touch more perhaps. Its not a beginning blend. Some may hate it, but I suggest its worth a try just for the sake of pipe history. 3 and a half stars. (as a footnote, one might swear there is a very tiny pinch of latakia in this....i could be wrong....but i think there is).

An old school burley blend that reminds me a bit of their Thanksgiving blend, though heavier in that floral, perfumey flavoring. (Original is likely the foundation blend for Thanksgiving Day.) The tin note is ripe with it. Presentation is a cube cut of uniform brown. That distinct flavor wears down a bit by mid bowl giving the quality burley a chance to shine with some nut, a hint of molasses, and even a faint vanilla note (deer tongue?). The burn is slow and remarkably cool. The finish is crisp and dry. Very smooth with absolutely no bite. Miss Perique says the room note smells of "old lady's house, and draperies". Do with that what you will.
There is simply nothing about this aroma or flavor to suggest I would like this blend. Yet I do. I like it a lot. So if you enjoy quality burley, don't let that perfumey floral flavoring scare you away. Give it a try and take yourself back to turn of the nineteenth century quality American tobacco. Original burley aromatics.
Warning: will ghost a pipe, at least temporarily.

This is exceptionally good burley, just like the rest of L.J. Peretti’s burley blends. The cut is chopped ribbon, and cube cut. Now….on to the aromatic part. This smells like elderly people’s homes I visited when I was a boy in the late 1960’s and early 1970’s. What in the name of Pete, is that aromatic? The aromatic isn’t bad, but it’s odd. I smoked four large bowl fulls today….and I enjoyed each and every one. Smooth, a little fruity, and bright. If you keep smoking a pipe long enough, you’ll be smoking burley.
