Sutliff Tobacco Company Kasimir

(3.56)
Kasimir denotes status as several Polish kings and prominent military leaders have borne the name. This extraordinary English mixture of smoky latakia, rich Orientals, golden Virginias, and burley could not be more aptly named.
Notes: No longer in production as of mid-late 2015. This same blend is however still available in bulk under the name “Count Pulaski” (who’s first name was, you guessed it, Kasamir! )

An English mixture with a slight aromatic feel. The variety of burleys provide a semi-molasses sweet, earthy nuttiness with a bare hint of spice. The Virginias offer citrus and grass as the base of the blend. The Cyprian latakia is a little sweet, smokey and woodsy as a supporting player. The dry, woody, buttery sweet Orientals are mildly spicy in the background. I detect a little anise, and a lightly sweet rum topping which mutes the latakia just a mite, though not enough to distract the smoker. The variety of flavors work well together, creating a well balanced mixture for the experienced English aficionado. Aromatic smokers looking for an entry level English with a little strength and some richness will find this a good place to start. Has a mild nic-hit. No chance of bite or harshness. Burns cool and clean at a reasonable rate with a mostly consistent flavor. Leaves little moisture in the bowl, and requires an average number of relights. Has a pleasant after taste. Can be an all day smoke.

This is a fine blend by Sutliff. Great cuts of tobacco with nice sized leaf presence. The myriad of flavors unite perfectly to create a nice, well balanced, smooth smoke that allows you to seek out all of its nuances and truly experience a great blend and all its offerings. The Latakia has its place and the Burleys provide balance with the Orientals. Added to it is a sweet subtle note to each which doesn't distract from the tobacco offerings. The flavor tone provides additional interests and is ever present as you seek each piece to this fine orchestra. My favorite Sutliff blend yet. This is a bridge offering. Its not squadron leader, night cap genre, yet it is not overly aro in nature. It captures a great place in bewtween and it fills that gap extremely well. A great smoke for anyone to enjoy, whether new or old to the piping community.

I received a free tin at the Chicago pipe show last year and truly forgot about it! The room note is a pleasant surprise given those around me aren't complaining! For a latakia blend it has a great balance of the tobaccos and while having that great latakia smokiness it doesn't overpower. To me all the tobaccos work together perfectly and while detecting a light casing which I believe lends to the room note, that too doesn't try to turn this into an aromatic.

This is an excellent blend. Currently out of production, I suspect Sutliff has re-marketed it under another name. It's simply too good to be out of three line up. I bought two tins of Kasimir on a close out deal and had very low expectations. But the price was right! However, man of man was I surprised how well it smoked. I love English blends, especially those with latakia so I was looking forward to this low cost experiment. Opening the tin, the high quality tabacky was moist, thick ribbon-like cut. I still had low expectations but that changed with the first bowl. Lighting up, this blend satisfied my latakia cravings from the first puff. I would rate this a a mid-level latakia blend. The Cyprian latakia is deliciously just-smoky -right: neither too light or too heavy. The burley gives a nice sweetness but I did not detect the typical burley nut flavor. The Virginias are smooth and provide nice level of nicotine. And the Orientals, provide some nice flavors other reviewers are better at teasing out! Kasimir is simply an excellent blend. Currently out of production, I can't believe Sutliff hasn't re-marketed it under another name. It's simply too good to be out of their line up. Enjoy if you can find some old tins! Or find it under it's new name! Good luck!

I would put this in the same category as Frog Morton. It's similar, except more complex due to more tobacco varieties in the mixture. From the tin, I get a sweet and smokey Latakia forward aroma, which carries onward in the flavor of the smoke. The oriental leaf plays very nicely with the savory topping, in which I faintly detect a hint of anise. The VA and burley provide a good base, but the top quality Latakia is the most detectable to me, without being overly smokey. Very well balanced, but plenty complex. Can easily be enjoyed by the beginner or experienced smoker. Smokes best in a larger, conical bowl. This blend is out of production, so if you get the chance, I highly recommend trying it. I'm down to my last tin.
