(3.06)
A mellow and delightful Virginia-Perique blend, Sutliff's 1849 (a nod to the founding date of the original Sutliff tobacco shop) provides tang, citrus, sweetness, and spice via a blend of choice Red Virginia, Bright flue-cured Virginia, and two different Perique varietals.

The tangy dark fruity, woody, earthy, slightly bready red Virginia short ribbon is complemented by the tart and tangy citrusy, midly grassy, slightly floral bright flue cured Virginia thin flake. The red Va. is the more obvious of the two Virginias The earthy, woody perique is both granulated and ribbon cut, offering some plum, fig and raisins with a burst of pepper, and is 25% of the blend. Has no topping. The strength is just past the center of mild to medium. The taste is a step past that mark. The nic-hit is a slot behind the strength level. Won't bite, and has no harsh spots. Has a few small rough edges. Burns cool and clean at a reasonable pace with a mostly consistent, mildly sweet and spicy flavor from top to bottom. Has a mildly lingering, pleasant after taste and room note. Requires an average number of relights. Barely leaves any dampness in the bowl. Can be an all day smoke. Three and a half stars out of four.

...a bit different kind of VaPer...really quite a fine tobacco I think...

There are only a few Sutliff tobaccos that I enjoy and this one certainly got my attention. This is not "dark & brooding" like other VaPers, yet maintains its character from first light to finish.

The taste is light and "airy" providing a pure tobacco taste along with the two cuts of Perique playing back and forth nicely.

3 stars for the time being, but will update my assessment as I smoke a few more tins.

I was comped a tin at the final CORPS show in Richmond, now opened with some age on it. The tin note is a very mild natural fruity one. The cuts are perfectly described in the review by JimInks and make this a pleasantly slow smoke. This blend has a good amount of perique and it provides more a dominant than a condimental note. The Virginias, mainly red, do not have much sugar, are somewhat bland, and stay in the background for flavor. A fairly interesting smoke for those who really like perique. Two and a half stars.

Sutliff Tobacco - Sutliff 1849.

The blend is made up of quite coarse ribbons, and is mostly medium brown. The moisture of my tin was perfect when I first opened it, so I could get to smoking it straight away.

I'm a bit perplexed, as the flavour I get is a lot heavier with Perique than I was led to expect: it's sharp, spicy, a little musty, and for the initial part is the leading taste. When the Virginias join in, after about a quarter, they do so in a 'busy' fashion: grass, citrus, hay, and wood; there's quite a lot of flavour that comes from them, and towards the end of a bowl they're about equal with the Perique. I get no form of artificial taste from 1849, it's just a nice and natural flavour for the whole journey! It burns cool, and at a medium pace.

The room-note, I'll mark Pleasant to Tolerable for as I'm indifferent towards it, and I'm going to have to mark Medium for nicotine.

If the Perique had no mustiness I'd highly recommend 1849, but from where I stand I'll give it three stars.

Recommended.

This is without question the best Sutliff offering I have come across to date, and has significantly altered my opinion of the company. This is a nice VapPer! I won't say great tobacco, but it is a very good, well-proportioned blend solidly worthy of 3 stars. With time I may go higher, but right now I have a proven roster of 4 star VaPers in my rotation, and this one has not brought the artillery to unseat those favorites.

Tin note is a pleasant mixture of raisin bread with underlying sour note typical of this style. Perfect moisture right out of the tin. I've never needed to dry this before smoking, and it has never failed to produce a dry, bite-free smoke...bonus points in my book. Taste is mildly, deliciously sweet with a balanced dark note and nasal pinch brought by the perique. Occasionally I catch whiffs of something like salted caramel. Flavor profile is about what I would expect of this sort of blend, but the reason it didn't make the 4 star cut straight away is that the flavors of both the VAs and perique come off as rather subdued. Meaning there are loads of thick, creamy smoke, but a disproportionate amount of flavor in that substance. I think with some age this may alleviate the issue, and it's too bad this one isn't in bulk availability.

All in all, a worthy offering for fans of darker VaPers. Don't let the Sutliff name keep you from trying this...they've done a terrific job with this blend.

A nice VaPer, one that could be an all day blend and one that would do well with age.

It's a quality leaf that burns nicely and is at an ideal moisture level. Burns a bit fast, so you have to sip on it a bit more to keep the heat down.

Flavor wise for me it starts off with the more hay/grass flavors from the VAs with the Perique in the background not so noticeable. The second half of the bowl the sweet citrus and fruity VA flavors come out and a bit of the plum and pepper from the Perique come out as well.

It's not an outstanding complex VaPer, but it is a very enjoyable smoke.

If you like VaPers give this one a try!
