McClelland Frog Morton on the Town

(3.32)
A rather mellow smoke, McClelland's Frog Morton on the Town draws deep rich flavor from its base of golden and red Virginias and a pleasant smoky, earthy undertone from the latakia. A subtle flavoring from Basma (a Greek Oriental tobacco) gives the blend a unique, almost vanilla like flavor.
Notes: The name Frog Morton comes to us from the works of JRR Tolkien. Frogmorton: A village in the Eastfarthing of the Shire. It stood on the East Road, between the Three-farthing Stone (fourteen miles to the west) and the Brandywine Bridge (twenty-two miles to the east). Immediately to the north of the village, the stream known as the Water broke into two, creating a wide watery region - this feature seems to have given Frog Morton its name, which means "frog marsh".

Update: The more I go back to the FM blends the less I like them. They have a role and at times are phenomenal, but that is mood dependent. This is a very light, sweet English/Aromatic. What makes me down grade this is that it is unidimensional and, well, flat. The flavor hits the spot when in the mood but it is not overly complex and I tend to think most of the flavor comes from the topping and not the tobacco. Not that that is always bad, but if you are hankering for tobacco goodness the FM series tend to disappoint. OTT is no different and in fact seems to rely more on the topping.

Since the news of McClelland leaving the business just hit, I am committing to reviewing all of their blends that I have been smoking. FMOTT is one I have been enjoying for awhile and will miss. The tin note is vanilla and whiskey, while the blender says there is no topping and that the Basma is what gives the vanilla aroma, my nose says otherwise but I will take their word for it. The blend is a light English and the Basma is the star of this performance. While the Latakia is ever present the real flavor, or what makes the real flavor pop is the Basma. the light vanilla flavor balanced with the sweetness from the latakia and VA's is really uniuqe and delicious. Threre is also a buttery character that hits around mid bowl that adds to this wonderful blend. It is almost as if the smokiness from the Lat and the slight woody notes from other orientals barely are noticed but the blend would fall flat with out them. This is in tight contention with FMC in this series for number 1. I love them both and will miss them dearly.

Love this tobacco. One of my favorites. This is the first tobacco that I went, WOW for. All other tobacco's I had smoked before this were just OK and always left me with a slightly unpleasant after taste. Not this one, the taste in my mouth kept going on for at least 30 minutes after the smoke. Sweet, smokey, not harsh. Very nice smoke. Everybody that I've had try it, fell in love with it right away.

Just another solid entry from the frog. To me, I get a lot of floral, almost soapy taste from FMOTT. Not to say it's unpleasant, just a more pronounced oriental flavor. The Latakia is present but mild. The whole Frog Morton series is a must try. You really can't go wrong no matter which one you choose. Another great all day smoke.

Frog Morton on the Town is a nice, mild smoke with a sweet, nutty taste as you get further down the bowl. I like it as a break from the stronger, Dunhill blends that are also in my rotation, like Night Cap and Early Morning Pipe.

I bought this blend on a whim after absolutely loving Frog Morton's Cellar and having tried regular Frog Morton only once. The latter was excellent: straightforward, and overall just the right proportion of latakia to Virginia. I could tell from the tin note that On the Town would be complex and largely defined by the Orientals that are added on top of the VA/latakia base. I did not like the blend a lot the first time I lit up, but I chalk that up entirely to preference. I had not yet acquired the taste for the woodsy depth unique to a lot of Oriental tobaccos. After several smokes, however, I came around to the blend. It is mild, but deep, and has a very unique character. Still, I lack the experience of those who can better appreciate the nuances of various Balkan style blends. I recommend this as a blend that stood out over a lot of other blends with similar ingredients. It's less sweet than the other Frog Morton blends, and has a much fuller taste. If it burns too hot the flavors are completely obscured, but if it burns cool enough, the orientals in tandem with the latakia yield a distinct and robust flavor that I have to admit I am still trying to put my finger on.

I can't believe I forgot to review this; it's one of my favorites. A recently finished four year old tin just disappeared in record time. I am convinced that there is a chocolate aroma to the Frog series which I love. It is slightly sweet at the start, but the interplay of Orientals & Latakia keep turning around in different directions from sweet at the top, nutty at the bottom and almost floral in the rather long mid section. Best for me in a tall conical bowl of any kind.

Delicious! Top notch leaf; medium-bodied and very smooth.

Sweet tin-note suggests unammed topping but not obvious- melds well with the Virginias and provides welcomed sweetness.

Orientals nice and balanced.

Latakia butresses the blend but lightly.

Pretty masterful stuff- wherever in your pipe journey you may be.

My favourite of the fm series. It is a mild oriental with floral and smokey-wood notes. Balanced, smooth, very tasty.

A great cross-over between vapor and english.

This is a very mild smoke. If your palate is acclimated to more powerful English blends, this one may come off a bit underwhelming. There are moments when smoking this particular blend that I have to stop and actively think about the taste in order to form an opinion.

On the Town' does not jump out at you and assault the senses. It is subtle, perhaps even delicate in all aspects. As a previous reviewer noted, 'On the Town' may serve wonderfully as an entry point for aromatic smokers to enjoy a bit of the uncased world. As for me, I can recommend this blend, the flavor and nicotine will not bowl you over, but there are times when a quiet smoke is required to accompany rather than demand the attention of one's thoughts.

I'm still new-ish to pipe smoking, and this was my first blend with Latakia/orientals, so keep that in mind.

The smell in the tin is pretty mossy/swampy/something(?), but I can't quite put my finger on it. Being inexperienced in Latakias/orientals, I'm assuming it's one of the two (or a combination thereof).

Packed a full bowl, using the three step process. Found it a little tough to get a char light, but once I did, and gave a light tamp/relight, I was good to go.

I instantly knew I was smoking something I hadn't smoked before. I was getting something that tasted mossy/swampy with a hint of rubber or something equally odd. I wanted to give it a fair shake, so I smoked the whole bowl.

Not overly strong in either smoke, or vitamin N, but was definitely flavourful.

I'm not sure whether it is the Latakia or the orientals that my tastebuds didn't love, but there's something in here that I'm not a big fan of. I'll revisit it in a few weeks to try again, but for now, I'm rating this a two. It smoked nicely, just isn't my cup of tea.
