McClelland No. 5125 Coyote Classic Full

(3.04)
A rich, full Oriental mixture made for the American taste. This is a classic outdoor smoke for the woodsman or cowpoke. It is stout with lots of smoked Latakia and fragrant Turkish, with just enough natural sweet matured Virginia for interest and balance. Then, we age it under pressure for several months to develop a tobacco that will bring the smoker so much pleasure he'll howl like a coyote.

This tobacco has an interesting flavor- the sweetness of the Virginias starts off - and ends! as the predominate flavor. It is heartily supported by the latakia and is topped off with a citrusy oriental.

While it is novel and has a full spectrum of flavor I prefer Two Friends' Bed & Breakfast when I'm in the mood for a VA/Or.

Smoking this reminds me of an undead zombie band of fiddlers with irreflective hollow eyes whittling away at the devil's instruments in the moonlight.

Upon opening the bulk I was impressed by the darkness and the smoked smell of this tobacco. The cut is varied, with mostly ribbons and some chunky pieces that I decided to rub in order to obtain a more homogeneus blend and make the packing easier. The burning is even, cool, dry...This blend really helps you so you are free to taste it without bothering about the smoke dynamics. Despite a poor-to-medium nicotine content this mixture delivers plenty of flavour, it's really smoky and stout as it appears, with latakia dominating from the beginning to the end. The orientals are tasty too and add some deepness to an otherwise monodimensional blend, since Virginias here are a mere support (at least I couldn't taste them). All in all it isn't a very complex blend but is a wonderful value for the latakiaheads.

Looking for a rock-solid, all day english blend? This is the stuff. I love this blend and, now keep at least a pound at all times. This is a very American English blend, due to the sweet textures that are emitted from the VA's. A great all day smoke that is a value to boot!

McC's Coyote Classic, I have to admit, is fairly described in the posts above. But as a member of the Full English Proletariat, I have to come to Coyote's defense. There isn't a thing wrong with a Full English that can be smoked all day. This is a Fun smoke. If there is an "auto-pilot" Full English, Coyote is probably it. And "Coyote" is not a reference to the coarseness of the cut, it's simply an apt reference to the response of indoor bystanders... and that can be useful when certain bystanders come to visit. Fact is; Coyote is a tasty, easy English that is fun to smoke. My rating it as "occasional" is only because of my habit of smoking one blend exclusively for a few days, then on to another blend for a few days and etc. so it takes me about a month to cycle around to Coyote or any other specific blend on my shelf. Four stars to Coyote! Have been smoking Coyote more lately and liking it better and better.

This is extraordinarily good tobacco, full of flavor. The Latakia is forward, it's the first taste that I detect, the Turkish is spicey, and right behind the Latakia and the Virginia tobacco provides a base that is not subdued by either the Turkish or the Latakia. At times, it is reminiscent of one of Drew Estate's good cigars but the experience is fine pipe tobacco all the way. The nic is mild to medium, or that is how I perceive it. It is a luxurious experience but I could smoke it all day. I can't imagine ever tiring of it.

Having finished up my first 4 ounce purchase of 5125, it is now firmly established in my rotation. The subtle sweet sourness of the Orientals pulls the Latakia and Virginia components into sharp, contrasting focus, the net result being a sublimely satisfying, moderately complex, reverie-inducing smoke. The pressed aging of the blend, I surmise, yields a slight, smoky tree-nuttiness that, in my mouth, is unique to this mixture. It's difficult for me to concentrate on anything other than the fragrant clouds of billowing smoke and the full, luscious flavor of each puff. My book sits open, unread, on my lap. I could smoke this all day, but it would distract me from anything else I hoped to accomplish. I greatly look forward to sampling the effects of aging on this delightful blend.

McClelland - No. 5125 Coyote Classic Full.

Because it's loosely pouched and there isn't a tin description I couldn't remember whether it was flavoured or straight. The smell from the pouch, however, suggests a casing of some kind. Quite a vague smell, but indicative of a flavouring. The majority of the blend has been rubbed into ribbons, I can only see a few pieces which warrant the name Broken Flake. The moisture of this pouch was good the moment I opened it.

I'd expected a smokier flavour; the Lat's notable, but it isn't bolshie. The Turkish gives a lighter/aromatic flavour, and accounts for a lot of the taste. It's a little difficult to pinpoint exactly what the topping is, but for the initial part of a bowl it gives the smoke a slightly toasty embellishment, and the flavour's only delicately floral. It falls out of favour with me, a bit, after a quarter: this is when it takes on a more of a bitter/perfumey quality. 5125 gives a good burn, and a cool smoke.

The room-note isn't the most auspicious, and the nicotine's medium.

If the flavour didn't fluctuate, but kept the slight toastiness for the whole bowl I'd highly recommend this, but as it stands I'll stick with a recommendation.

Three stars.

This blend does not match up well to my taste buds. Something is missing in this blend. Not enough Latakia taste nor enough sweet Virginia taste nor even enough in the way of orientals. This blend seems to lack any specific identity. Yes it is a nice blend of smoke but nothing to really make you want to write home about. I am not sure what the blender was shooting for but in my opinion he missed it. A 3 star smoke at the very best.

One for latakia junkies like myself. needs to dry a tad but THEN its a hefty smoke for the evening to wind down the day. Not a srong as some latakia backys but enough to know its there. lights well and and a rather pleasant room note If you like Latakia. Try a tad and if you don't think its everything I say its well , Uh, ah, yeah just send it to me , thats the ticket and I will burn the dadgone thing! hoo-boy

This blend smells great in the jar, I had high hopes, granted mine had some major age on it, but still it smelled good. Smoking it though, it had some good oriental notes, but kind of a dull note that I get from many drugstore blends. Would be a good all day smoke for some I would think, but overall not my favorite. It just didn't speak to me as anything that I would want to consistently experience.
