I was packing for my vacation and did not have the room to take a jar of tobacco with me so I went out a bought some capt. Black. I usually smoke a lot of the petersons tobaccos and I was unsure how good a drug store tobacco would be but I love my pipe so I packed a bowl and was very pleased with the smell and taste of this tobacco . It stayed lit and I really didn't have to tamp it too often. It has a nice cool smoke and little bite ( slow draws are the key) . It also has a very nice room note too. I totally recommend giving this a try at least . I think this found its way into my tobacco collection/horde

Captain Black is truly an aromatic tobacco blend. The pouch aroma is top notch with its vanilla whiskey smell. In my opinon, this tobacco sometimes gets a bad rap because it is an OVER THE COUNTER tobacco. Captain black burns clean and stays lit for most of the bowl, and the sweet smell of vanilla and whiskey comes through at once. It burns cool and has a sweet taste of vanilla and whiskey if smoked slowly (which is the key to really enjoying this blend). I have had nothing but great reviews on the room note. This blend is a must for ANYONE who enjoys a good aromatic tobacco.

Is is one of my favorites. The tobacco smells nice in the pouch. But the taste and smell of the smoke is just great. It burns evenly with a good temperature. It also bites my tongue a little.

4 stars because despite its cheap price, this tobacco is simply good. Milder than other expensive aromatics like Sweet Vanilla, but it also costs half the price! The White pouch has nothing to share with some danish or vanilla-flavoured blends: flavour is wonderful, and taste too. The only defect is : too mild. But hey, it makes it also an all day smoke for the same reason. It will not ruin your pipe, leaving no strange aromas in there. Well done, Captain.

Should have reviewed this a long time ago. Have been smoking it for about 2 years and it has become one of my go-to baccys when I can't decide what to smoke today.
CBW comes in about perfect moisture content for smoking which, combined with a nice cut, makes it easy to pack and light. Good quality tobacco with no sticks or too many 'fines'. No problem lighting or keeping lit, smokes cool, no bite, no surprises. Leaves a slightly grainy dark grey ash with no bad after odor or taste in the pipe or mouth. Only thing that keeps it from a perfect score is a strong taste that starts building up near the bottom of the bowl.
Although this has no outstanding uniqueness, it is very friendly. Can't really call it an aromatic, Balkan, Oriental or English. Somewhat reminiscent of Carter Hall which I have learned to like a lot.
Will always keep this on hand in quantity since it seems to mellow with age. Also highly recommend it for beginners

Update: 3/19/10 If you really want this stuff to taste good then buy it in the can. The pouches are not always consistant. One time it will be great and the next time it's all dried out and almost tasteless. Adding a little moisture to the dried out stuff helps a little but not nearly enough.
The pouches are a gamble. Roll the dice and see what you get. Upping my recommendation but only for the cans.

What can i say, this is a real bowl of happiness for me, i love this stuff and smoke it all day. The room note is terrific, the taste is velvet smooth and quite sweet. The perfect smoke all the time.If Lane LTD ever discontiues this like so many other of my favourites, i think id put down the pipe for good.

A drug store classic for sure. I like to keep away from saying "drug store blend", because you can buy it at most all local grocery stores, but a vintage tobacco I have saw in drug stores and corner stores tine and time again since the days of old. Most of the time around where i'm from (central PA), i'm pretty limited on what brands stores have to offer.Captain Black is always there a lot like my tried and true dear friend Skoal.
The first blend I tried after buying a corncob pipe. And even after investing a few more dollars ($3.59 for a knockoff Dr. Garbo), I wouldn't be afriad to smoke it in there to lightly taint my pipe for future smokings.
I found this pipe can be mixed with any flavor, and give it boost to maybe a duller flavor like sir Walter Riley, that almost needs to be used with CBW to keep it from clogging.
Being so moist, I face a lot of cloggings from this when I smoke it. I cleaned my cheap pipe a few months back and got what resembled road tar out of the mouth piece....(blame that on me if you will). This stuff if it was in a sealed tin could probably last until the second coming. I thought I got a fresh batch of chew spit when I first bought a pouche. Indeed it was ripe I don't know how old, but it didn't matter. A good smoke until the last pinch.
For Room Note: I've had nothing but great compliments from smoking Captain Black. Several weeks back, I was out on a date with my lady friend and I even got her to take a few hits from the pipe. So gentlemen, the ladies love this blend along with other aromatics. Being as young as I am, a lot of my friends don't expect to see someone like myself smoke a pipe. I got teased about looking like Sherlock Holmes and being the pipe guru of my city but they all support my habit and I talk to them about the fine blends of the world....Captain Black being the first one I always speak of
So for sure 4 stars.........hell 10/10

While often touted as a cheap, disgusting blend I have found this to be a cheap, quite pleasant blend. I have smoked a pipe for about a year or so and have only just recently tried it, while re-ordering another favorite aromatic (Middle Earth Blend) I simply couldn't resist adding a pouch just to try -- it being so cheap and "classic."
It lights easily & stays lit, has a sweet vanilla and mild but definitely present tobacco flavor that lasts from the beginning to the end of the bowl (it never goes sour, although it never develops any real complexity either) and has no bite whatsoever. It can smoke slightly wet, but I've seen far worse.
This has become one of my favorite aromatic smokes when I'm in the mood for something light and sweet. I could not smoke it exclusively, as it would bore me, but for what it is it's really quite good and you certainly can't beat the price (I've had far "classier" aromatics that I wasn't nearly as pleased with). A definite staple in the rotation.
