I cannot see why many people find this tobacco bad. For me, this was a wonderful experience. It is a mild tobacco, the room has a wonderful smell and, if smoked properly, it will not bite the tongue. You will not even feel something on the tongue with this. Altough it is a very cheap tobacco, it is a good smoke, recommended for every smoker, whether it is a beginner or an advanced one. However, I gave it three stars because you cannot enjoy this very much: it burns really quick. But, in the end, it is a confortable tobacco: it is cheap, it is easily packed, it is easily lighted and smoked, it has a pleasant aroma, what can you ask more?

UPDATE:

Gets one more star. After a few months of aging, the aroma matures and the blend has almost a perfect balance between aromas and the tobaccos contained. I will definitely buy this again.

My first review on the site and I felt it should be appropriately on the first tobacco I smoked and my fathers favorite. The Captain white is in my opinion the best starter tobacco there is, it lets you know where the midpoint of tobacco resides. There are definitely better and worse when it comes to all aspects of selection. Captain Black White is the nexus of tobaccos it should be the beginning, and when your palate becomes muddled with too much euphoria, it should be the end. My experience is not too deep or too varied but knowing the base of your tobacco taste is priceless. Captain Black white is a must for beginners and experienced alike.

12-16-2007 - Much like other reviewers the Captain introduced me to pipe tobacco. I enjoy the pouch aroma (raisins and rum come to mind) and the room note is fantastic.

It packs well and smokes cool if you're patient. This is my everyday smoke. Though I am a fairly new pipe smoker, Captain Black-White is an enjoyable blend that is easy to find and hasn't disappointed.

weather If you like aromatics, or you don't, You probably have already tried this at some point. Either you love it or hate it. Personally, This or Lane RLP-6 is What I keep in my favarite Humidor and smoke most often.

I like trying different kinds of tobacco and like both traditional AND aromatics, depending on my mood. Cpt Black White is what I have liked for several years (close to 15) and I keep going back to it.

It DOES have a drawback. It does tend to get wet after a little way down the bowl. You also must clean your pipe after EVERY smoke and even go through it with some solution every once in a while or else it will taste like,,,, Well, You Know.

Maybe it's just me, but I like the sweet flavor and aroma. It goes great with my coffee. I also like the way my house and car smell after smoking it.

I have never had it bither my gums.

This is one of only a few drugstore blends I will smoke (although I will give any of them a fair chance).

If you are not an aromatic fan, Don't waste your time. But if you are, This is easily obtainable, but make sure that you get a fresh pouch.

The first pipe tobacco I ever smoked, Captain Black White Label. I still revisit it occasionally, and I still truly enjoy it. I have other aromatics now that I like better, but you cannot go wrong with The Captain. A tried and true blend that has stood the test of time, if you have not already tried this, I highly recommend it. I can still remember going to a Church festival with my Grandparents back in the late Eighties. I was 18 and had just started smoking a pipe. EVERYWHERE I went at that festival, I recieved compliments on The Captain's Aroma. I smoked it faithfully for more than a half a dozen years before moving to English Blends, VaPers, and Higher End Aromatics. But I pick up a pouch about once a year, and revisit many fond memories. My only complaint is the current COST for a pouch. When I started smoking The Captain back in 1989, it was $1.44 a pouch. NOW, it is $5.15 a pouch a the local Drugstore! My Premium Aromatics are in many cases, cheaper than this! But still, I buy it...you just can't keep from visiting tried and true old friends!

You know, I am a beginner. I mean, pipe smoking, actually... And all advisers, I asked about a blend to begin, told me "try this!" in one accord. Well, I've tried... Camille Corot said that the impression is everything... Yeah, my first impressoin was amazing! French painter was right... Of course, I've had nothing to compare, but that was beautiful combination of taste, scent, sensation of process as a whole. Even a little tongue bite, came through, has introduced a spicy note in the process. I've tried a lot of others after that, but I always return to CBW. Perhaps, it's kinda first love...

BTW, I feel thirst during smoking just this tobacco. It does not disturb me, but interesting.

While, admittedly, I am very new to pipe smoking, my friends have allowed me to try a number of the 'drug store' brands and this is by far the best, in my humble opinion. Admittedly, I'm an aromatic smoker, and I like a sweet, smooth, light smoke. This tobacco is all of the above.

My only complaint is that it's not very rich or complex, and it gets sort of repetetive about half-way through. Also, I wouldn't finish the last fifth or so. I didn't find the last fifth particularly unpleasant in and of itself, but it was a very jarring and rapid transition from the light, smooth vanilla to a somewhat more piquant tobacco flavor. If you like roller-coaster tobaccos, feel free to ignore my advice, but I just found it sort of ... I don't know, disturbing.

I hope to upgrade to a better tobacconist brand very soon, but this will surely hold me over for now.

*********

Well, I've been smoking for a few months now, I've had some changes in thought.

This tobacco is not quite the roller-coaster I thought it was. I can now smoke a full pipe of this stuff without problems. I was just smoking it too fast, so my recommendation is to take it easy with this stuff if you're new. I still think it's a great cheapo tobacco, and if it was all I had available I'd smoke it without complaint. But if you want something similar but not quite as wimpy and with a bit more complexity for about half the price look for Admiral's Choice Vanilla Cavendish at your local CVS.
