The Captain -- he's easy to find, but you can always do better. Syrupy, flat, invites gurgling, and burns the tongue. The only positive is that it smells nice.

Ugh, double ugh, triple ugh, one million times ugh. Why do people like this? It's awful. It has no discernible taste other than cigarettes, and it leaves a nasty cloying smell in the pipe. "Captain Black White" is the Big Mac of the pipe tobacco world, but just because it's a best-seller it doesn't mean that it's a gem. There's nothing subtle, nuanced, enjoyable or anything interesting going on in this tobacco. It's a flat and dull smoke. We may as well smoke cardboard or inject nicotine into our jugular veins.

Probably most known and famous pipe tobacco for everyone and probably most known and famous worst pipe tobacco for experienced pipe smokers.

this stuff is vanilla air freshener and like as other air fresheners, this chemical product must not smoke.Pay attention to your health and not smoking this stuff certainly extend your life.

Note: this stuff is helpful by two ways. One is you can unpack it and put in the car, smells so good and secondly if you go to picnic burn it with some kindling and smell,it may dominate also barbecue fume

I had to try it at least once, and I'm glad I did. I had very low expectations, but the blend exceeded them (not by much).

This is a very mild smoke with a very strong pouch aroma, and a very pleasant room note. I detect vanilla and rum, which is also perhaps producing a false cocoa scent. Very low in nicotine.

The aftertaste is strong, and rather artificial unfortunately. But the first half of the bowl is OK. It has bitten me, so be careful.

The price is somewhat absurd -- I could get an SPC blend for two more dollars. But you can't beat its availability. I encourage you to try it. It may work for you.

It doubles as a great car air freshener - just leave the pouch open.

Save you time and money. Very negative towards this. Chemical taste. No flavor. I smoked half a pipe of this. Tossed on compost pile to help break it down. So many other brands that cost the same with much more value and pleasure. Why should anyone start off with this? Get a good blend so you won't be discouraged. PASS!

barely decent tobacco too expensive and also not very impressive. Has very little flavor but also tends to bite quite easily even on a slow pull. I would recommend you only buy the smallest package to start to make sure you like it because to me this tobacco does not seem to have a universal likability so play it safe. Not to mention that although not the most expensive it is still way too much money to chance on something that you may hate.

I guess this blend is great for first-timers. It's a great way to show beginners what casings can do to tobacco, and a way to get cigarette smokers to like pipe smoking. The first bowl I had was average, and left me wishing I had some Navy Cavendish to make up for it. After that, I couldn't stand having a full bowl the second time, and had to quit half way through. Since then, I left it in a corner as a potpourri that actually gives off a great vanilla scent to the room, but never had it again. Seriously, the vanilla is overpowering. Besides that, after those two bowl, when I got a good Virginia in it, my briar was already tainted with the vanilla! I had to have some other four full bowls to get it to a pleasant level. If you're gonna try it out, please do it in a cheap corncob.

I know I have a bias, since I found out that I'm not that into aromatics, but thought I could help someone choose a more suited blend for their tastes. I apologize to those who enjoy it.

Unfortunately this is not really good. It tastes of chemicals more than vanilla or tobacco. Evil, wicked bite lurks in the second half of a bowl of this.

I smoked this and borkum riff whiskey (very putrid also) when I was first picking up the pipe years ago because it was easy to find. So I guess you know I don't reccomend it to anyone who likes a good tasting chemical free smoke. If you like to smoke only because others think it smells good you might find it useful.

I'll stick to my Mcclelland's. I'll pass on this one.

When I tryed this tobacco back in the early 80's I quite liked it. It was mild, full of flavor, very zesty, and didn't bite. The aroma was to die for. It smelled like chocolate chip cookies baking in the oven. This is when they packed it in a thick tin with a pry up lever built into the lid. Inside the can you found a very black fire cured cavendish and bright ribbon cut {although it looked almost shag} burley. Well Iv'e tryed this blend recently and I thought it was terrible. The taste and the zestyness have dissapeared! The black tobbaco has faded to a burnt sienna almost. The aroma has changed too. This isn't the Captain Black I remember ! It also ruins your pipe and you can't get the taste of this tobacco out of your pipe unless you clean it with alcohol, brandy, or whisky. I will not keep this blend on hand. I wish you could still get Black Clipper. That was the best of the drugstore type black aromatics Don't waste your money, pipe cleaners, or your brandy on Captain Black.
