I was out driving this evening and realized I did not have my pouch with me. So I stopped at the drug store and picked up a pouch of Captain Black White.
I can remember many, many years ago years when my late father would drive over to the drugstore (with me and my little brother in tow) for a pouch of Captain Black as a change of pace from his regular Tinderbox blend. He would smoke it, but never stuck with it for long. Now I understand why. It was mild, slightly sweet, and smelled nice. It just did not have any umph.
So while I was not crazy about Captain Black; it reminded me of my dad. For that, it was wonderful.

This is a great tobacco if you are not the one smoking it. It smells great, especially to the non-smoker. However, it is so sickly sweet, it is unbearable to smoke.
New smokers may enjoy its mildness but I suspect this brand has turned off as many new smokers as people who stick with it.

They say the Captain Black we get here in Europe is not a faithful representation of the American original and I hope for all you guys stateside that's true! I smoked my sample in a corncob pipe to get that authentic all-American experience. It all started well, lit easily and tasted smooth and colourful. Enjoyed the first bowl and decided to go for another soon after - possibly a mistake, by the end of the second bowl I found the sweetness of the tobacco had become sickly in taste and I struggled to get through the remainder of my pipe. Got up to walk to the local village Inn and it was all I could do to avoid throwing up from the candy-sweet mixture. I prefer Latakia and English blends and perhaps these aromatic and drug-store varieties are not for me. Feel I should search out a pack of US imported 'Captain' before I finally lay my demons to rest but at $18 for a 50g pouch over here, I'm not sure it's really worth it.
