As an aromatic, this seems to be made with good quality leaf: you can see that by the fact that it smokes pretty cool, not extremely wet (for an aromatic,at least)and you won't need to relight a hundred times. It keeps the flavour throughout the bowl, and that's another good point. A good tobacco, if you like aromatics, and it isn't expensive, which helps too!

I tried Gold after White and Blue, and I just don't think it stacks up. It has the typical Captain Black cut and feel - that is, lots of PG.

I like the other Captain Black offerings mentioned above, this one just didn't do much for me.

By the way - I have noticed questions about the Captain Black pipes. I bought all three (Yeoman, Sentinel, and Helmsman). They take 6-8 weeks to arrive. All three are what I would consider a good value for the money spent. In fact, since two of them are less than the going rate for a Grabow in the drugstore, I would say pass on the Doctor, and go with the Captain. Even the Helmsman at 25 bucks is a good deal.

I felt left out, as I had never smoked Captain Black before. After smoking and tasting this, I can say it is very similar to 1Q. It is good to know that any local liquor store or drug store that I am near carries this tobbaco and I can fix my Cavendish jones.

The pouch that I purchased was very very dry. That was fine because it burned pleasantly, without a lot of need for relights nor goop at the finish. If it were more moist, I can see how the other reviewers could call it overly sweet.

To be honest, the flavor was quite mild, almost like smoking air. I don't think of myself as a presumptious pipe smoker, nor do I worry about where I purchased the tobacco or the cost. I would smoke this again. The room note was quite pleasant. I am sure this is quite the crowd pleaser.

Haha, I also ordered the pipe from the Captain Black Pipe offer for $21.95.

Update for Scotpipe - I will let you know how the pipe smokes when I receive it, I am not expecting much, but thought it would be fun to have as a collector's item.

I just bought a bag of this myself not too long ago, hearing so many people saying my Tinderbox Midnight blend smelled alot like Captain Black. I had seen it in the drugstores and shied away from it after my tastes had developed. But, I thought I would give it a try. It definitely is pleasing, giving off a mild vanilla scent that is very pleasing to others around you. Reminds me of the blends the older men used to smoke in the pubs in Winchester.

I found this to be a mild, straightforward aromatic blend. It has a soft vanilla aroma in the pouch and maintains this vanilla taste throughout the bowl. The room aroma is very pleasing. I doubt that I could make this my everyday smoke as I would like something a little more complex and I would grow weary of the vanilla after awhile. On occasion when I want a simple Cavendish smoke, however, I will smoke this.

Update: I've downgraded my review because I doubt that I will buy this again unless desperate. There is just too much good tobacco out there to waste money on this unless you can't get to your tobacconist.

I tried thi as an initial tobacco. I didn't much like it, bu I really don't know why. I much prefer Drury Lane from Edward's (not yet in database). Maybe it was that vanilla casing- the "bag aroma" can make one nauseous if you smell it long enough- too much casing? I'll try it again after I've tied a few more blends. It's cheap.

This blend was a surprise for it had what looked like a decent ribbon cut burley Cavendish. Not the shag cuts of some other Grocery Store blends.

The smell from the pouch is of a sweet vanilla. It is obvious this is a heavily cased Aromatic blend. Personally, the smell is very pleasing and sweet, and it doesn't even describe the smoke.

As this is smoked, it goes from a vanilla, to a pastry, and then finally has a little fruity aroma. The flavor also transforms in a similar manner.

One problem with this blend is that the quality of the blend tends to be questionable. One time it was purchased and the cut was heavenly, with little to no stems. Another time it had a bit more shag to it and stems were everywhere. This is not typical of the Lane blends that have been purchased in bulk. If this weren?t the case, this would be a real regular in the rotation.

Of course, if you do not enjoy burley and/or Aromatics you will not like this blend, it has a slight re-light factor, when re-lit it has a sometimes-nasty aftertaste if it has been sitting in the bowl. It clears quickly, but sometimes it may put you off.

This is a perfect tobacco for the beginning smoker; it's sweet but it's forgiving, not biting the tongue of the too-rapid smoker as hard as some. Also, it's readily available in drug and discount stores, so it's convenient.

The golden Cavendish has a strong vanilla casing, giving an immediate pleasant aroma and flavor. This tobacco doesn't require much relighting and the long ribbons pack springily. The flavor gets a little overwhelming and almost boring if Cavendishes aren't your preference, but mostly it's a soft, pleasant smoke. It's also good for a new pipe in that it quickly cakes the bowl.

Coming in a pouch, the tobacco is apt to be on the moist side and may require some airing until it's dry to the touch. It's not a complex tobacco, but it travels well in your fishing-tackle box or glove compartment.
