For the life of me, I have no idea why this tobacco is so popular, nor why it is often recommended to new pipe smokers. Dare I even call this chemical goop 'tobacco'? It's very wet. Totally drenched in PG preservative. No amount of drying will revive it. And there's no tobacco taste. Instead, you'll get an artificial burnt-cardboard-dipped-in-vanilla flavor. Blah. Also, it burns very hot, quickly roasting the mouth. Plus it has a horrible artificial/chemical aftertaste that took me hours to get rid of. Practically zero nicotine. The only positive point is that the room note is nice. But that alone is not enough to save this infernal concoction. So-called Captain Black 'tobaccos' have probably turned off and driven away more new pipe smokers than any other blends in the history of pipe smoking. I will admit CBG is slightly more tolerable than Captain Black Regular... but not by much. Stay far, far away from this one if you know what's good for you. I strongly recommend Mac Baren's natural, smooth and tasty Seven Seas Gold instead. You'll thank me later.

A popular blend, and like many, I cut my teeth on quite a few of the CB varieties. I'm not going to review the other 4 or 5 I tried since they are very much alike with mostly just different aromatic qualities. This cased burley is cool smoking, if handled properly, overly moist and very fragrant, smelling of cherry, vanilla, coconut of what have you depending on the pouch you buy. Smells great, taste like dung. Potpourri in a bowl.

It's been several years since I smoked a pipe. I've been exclusively smoking fine cigars fro the past several years. I decided to pick up my old pipe as a change of pace. To my great surprise, although I live 45 minutes outside of midtown Manhattan, the number of stores carrying descent pipe tobacco are far and few between. I decide to buy a pouch of Captain Black Gold, recommended to me by a friend. I felt like i was sucking on one of my wife's perfume bottles. I couldn't wait to dump it out. I'll be looking over the reviews here to see what's really good, and order online.

Very heavily vanilla cased shredded drugstore blend. Billowing clouds of sweetish smoke smell like Chai Tea. OK in a pinch for when you run out of the good stuff. Best mixed with XXX Black Rope to make up for its many deficiencies.

This was the first pipe tobacco I tried, and I won't be buying it again. This is a very bland tobacco; there is barely any taste there at all. There is a very slight sweetness to it at the end of a draw, but this tang of flavor is gone by the time you get halfway through the bowl. Any flavor that was there (and there isn't much) disappears, and from then on you are just blowing tasteless smoke. Also this stuff will bite you hard if you overwork it. Not recommended. Buy yourself a tin of some good tobacco.

Having tried others in the capt. Black line (white and Royal) and found them to be suitable available-anywhere blends (not my first choices, mind you), I gave the gold a try. Although I know other reviewers said it brings more tobacco flavor than the other capt. Black blends, it also brings much more bite for me. May work for some but it didn't share the acceptability of the original or Royal. The Cherry didn't work either but that's another review...

I'm not quite sure what it is about this one, but I particularly don't like it. Whereas the White and Royal initially grab my attention with their over-the-top casing, the Gold never even made a good first impression. The vanilla-ey-ness comes across as almost as chemical-fruity. Stick with the White blend if you insist on Captain Black.

Was feeling nostalgic and decided to pick up a pouch of this stuff.
The flavoring is something like vanilla?sugar cookie dough or (insert something sweet here). It was a wonder that it any pouch aroma at all, because like most (if not any) drug store tobaccos they have been sitting there for a long time, and in some cases a VERY long time. Wouldn't surprise me that a box of these pouches have been passed around store to store only selling a few each time through the years. May be possible that the last person to buy a pouch from that crate/shipment was your grandfather. SO take heed and be wary of 'pouched' tobaccos and instead reach for tinned/canned ones.
Despite this stuff being almost too dry to save, it came back well once put into a tobacco pouch with a button humidifier. With that said, maybe the flavor was destroyed from age and tobacco gone stale. I tried it anyway, and got through a couple pipe-fulls. The taste was fairly flat, not as bad as some (IRC THREE STAR BLUE) but the tongue bite would not let me enjoy this stuff no matter how hard I tried. Tongue bite is something to be expected from aromatics, Captain Black, and most drug store brands yet this didn't have anything going on that would make the bite bearable (such as Capt'n Black White's AMAZING room note and OK flavor)
How pipesmokers could possibly let loose a beginner on these aromatics is beyond me, its borderline sadistic.
(come to think, if I didn't like someone I'd tell them to smoke this stuff first and say something along the lines of: "this is the best beginner blend, if you cant deal then don't smoke a pipe".. Not sure if I've met someone that I hate that much and wants to start smoking a pipe)
Just stay away from this one, or any Captain Black's tobacco save for the white---and with the 'white' only smoke if you love aromatics, and are experienced enough to avoid the tongue bite and or tolerate it.

My grandmother used to say "if you can't say anything nice, don't say anything at all". Well, Captain Black Gold has a... sort of... nice room note. Maybe I should end my review there. Really though, aside from the sentimentality of remembering grandpa's pipe smell, there isn't much pleasant here. It has an unnaturally weird chemical scent and taste. It tends to burn pretty hot. And I'm not sure there is any nicotine in it at all. It's just not a good tobacco.
Bottom line: If I follow the definitions of the stars, with 2 stars being "somewhat recommended" and 1 star being "not recommended"... I have to give it one star. There are just so many better blends out there, even if you want a cheap vanilla aromatic.
