The very nutty, earthy, woody, molasses sweet, mildly sugary, sightly cocoa-ish burleys (which include Kentucky) have a very light vanilla topping. I get a little of an essence of buttery, bready baked goods from it all, and there’s a pinch of spice from the burleys. The strength is just past the mild threshold, and the taste is a step past that. Has a very mild nic-hit. No chance of bite or harshness. Burns cool and clean and slightly slow as the tobacco is a tad moist. The flavor is consistent from top to bottom. Leaves little moisture in the bowl, and requires a tad more than an average number of relights. Has a pleasant, short lived after taste and room note. An easy going all day smoke

Out of the bag: Perfect for smoking right out of the bag. Not too moist, a distinct sweet scent in bulk. Not quite sugary. It's subdued and balanced by the scent of the burley itself.

Lighting: Lights quickly, expands nicely in the bowl, and stays lit with no problem. My first light lasted a full five minutes before I had to tamp or consider a true light.

Note: I smelled buttery rolls off the top. My brothers said it smelled like white cake to them. Regardless, it's very light- an almost sweet bakery scent.

Taste: On the palette, the flavor is even milder. To me it was as simple as warm bread. Nothing intense, but pleasant. In the nose, it takes on a spiciness that may bring out a salty-buttery hint, or possibly even peppery depending on how you'd describe the reaction. For me, this was less pleasant, and I tended to keep it in the mouth.

Aftertaste/smell: Due to the mild nature of this blend, the aftertaste leaves only that of the burley tobacco.

Recommended for: Beginners and those who would enjoy a mild, balanced blend with equal parts bakery-fresh warmth and burley flavor. Could be great for those transitioning from cigarettes and want a wonderfully smooth blend that is relaxing to smoke.

Not recommended for: Experienced smokers who seek a strong flavor, those who are sensitive or opposed to the distinct tobacco scent afterward, or indoor smokers who must find aromatic blends to please the wife or other housemates.

This bulk-blend from Lane is perhaps their homage to the classic American over-the-counter-burley. The blend, advertised as 100% Burley, in the pouch is a solitary light brown color, with no hint of multiple tobaccos. It is a mix of cube-cut and long cut, with a slightly woody, sweet pouch aroma. The blend packs easily due to the consistent cut, and on first light, burned smoothly with a mild, natural-tobacco flavor. There is a smooth and mild natural sweetness here, but without the sweet added-in flavor of a cased tobacco. The blend has a rather one-dimensional character with a single note reminiscent of leather or wood, but not complex. The aroma and flavor are consistent through several relights, and the mildness continues till the moisture in the dottle makes relights more frequent, and eventually causes a harshness that signals the end of the session. This is a back-to-the-basics experience, without the complex overtones of English blends, and without the mouth-watering flavor of cased aromatics, sort of the table wine of the tobacco world. Good stuff though, and I will continue to smoke this and perhaps use it as a base for experimentation with some additional tobaccos to see if I can create something exciting from these humble beginnings. In short -Recommended for a change of pace.

Is it burley and is it mild?? Yup on both counts! It is tasty and burns without many relights at all. The top note is something (Vanilla maybe?)sweet but not too sweet where it becomes hot and annoying to smoke. I smoked it sitting outside on the last evening of above 25F weather while drinking a hot chocolate and that was bliss! A great smoke for watching the world go by and not having a care in the world.

This is a very nice burley blend. In fact, this is probably the best traditional burley only tobacco I have ever tried. Way more quality than Prince Albert or Carter Hall and more American tasting than London Blend Burley.

This blend has a nice woodsy aroma in the pouch. I bought an ounce to give it a try. I notice a 50/50 mix of cube cut and long cut. I don't detect a noticeable flavoring agent. This blend came moist and needs to be dried out considerably. However, once dried, this blend produces a cool, long-lasting smoke.

The smoke is smooth and enriched with the flavor of Burley tobaccos. I liken it to eating almonds in a cigar humidor. It is nutty, cedar-like, and alternates between becoming slightly sweet and then more cigar-like. It is mild and flavor, but tasty. It has a medium nip on the tongue which can be mitigated by slow smoking.

The aroma is nice and this can be smoked all-day without overwhelming the palate. I do not notice the casing in the pouch, the flavor, or the aroma.

I'm not a big Burley fan, so I don't know if Burley aficionados would find this to be worthy of any esteem. I do know that I find this to be a quality alternative to the drug store Burley blends (having just revisited Carter Hall, I assure you that this is superior in every way). This isn't quite worthy of four stars, but is a solid and worth-while adventure for those who enjoy a true Burley. Congratulations to Lane for once again producing a quality product that is readily available.

This is indeed Lane's homage to good old time burley. Best in a cob, there is a very mild topping on it, which serves to sweeten the room note. If you puff gently, it won't get too bitter...maybe some though! A nice change of pace, sipping iced tea on the front porch. A mild, cool smoke.
