At first, I wrote this one off as another copy of Lane BCA, or perhaps even a pouched version of it with a Captain Black label on it. I bought it purely out of curiosity since I have been a fan of some of the other Captain blends (white, predominately). I opened the pouch to a very dark cavendish tobacco, which was to be expected. I also noticed the sugary sweet aroma of vanilla, which I also expected. What I DIDN'T expect was the hint of spiciness that it had as well - almost cinnamon like, or perhaps nutmeg. Anyway, I dried it properly and put it in a cob to try it out. This is where I was blown away: This seemingly run-of-the-mill aromatic was bursting with flavor. It was sweet, but not too sweet. The spices came through as well as the full flavor of the tobacco. It even burned cool. I've since tried it in many different pipes and went through 2 more bags. It's a great smoke any time of day, and it is by far the best Captain Black blend on the market currently. Please allow yourself to enjoy this awesome addition to the lineup - even if it isn't your everyday smoke.

Not a bad tobacco, but not spectacular. A run-of-the-mill black Cavendish. No bite, burns slowly. If you are in an pinch and nothing better is available, this would be ok.

Not exactly BCA in a pouch but very close. I think the Captain Black Dark has a bit more humectant than does BCA. The flavor is singular and rich. The room note is excellent. Benefits from a little drying time.

Not (yet) readily available in Canada, but I saw it online & couldn't resist, as I love Black Cavendish.

In the bag smells mostly of vanilla and liquour(?). An excellent tobacco overall, burns evenly (may require a little drying), minimal tongue bite, good taste & aroma. Too mild (in nicotine) for me, but it blends surprisingly well with Perique.

By comparison with CB original (White), all black cavendish, lighter on tongue, milder both in nic. & flavouring but still the characteristic & pleasant CB room aroma less overwhelming than CB Orig.

In my opinion this is the base tobacco for the original-white pouch version. It’s all black Cavendish, heavily steamed, with that very strong vanilla flavour typical of Captain Black. It is very smooth, easy to light, and very pleasant to smell. But that’s about it. Honestly, no thrill (even for an aromatic), no “zest”, no interplay with bright leaf.

Not a bad choice if you like a simple, rather monochromatic, straight forward vanilla tasting Cavendish. It won’t bite at all, and for a beginner, or for a veteran who has smoked it all and just wishes to settle down for a quiet afternoon with a simple smoke, this will do.

I'm relatively new to pipe smoking, and I still don't understand how so many people can like this tobacco. First of all, when you open the bag, you get somewhat of a good smell, but it is immediatly followed by a short of chemicaly, almost alcohol-like type of smell. In my case, the tobacco was pretty much at the perfect humidity level, however, even if it was respecting the rule of "sticks together when you pinch it but falls apart when you let it go", it still felt kind of weirdly moist in my hand. It didn't affect the smoke overall (didn't cause gurgle). How to say it... The smoke wasn't bad, but it wasn't the best either. It felt kind of flat in the mouth, with almost no taste if not a bready like taste & aftertaste. It is a conpletely a different story when you retrohale ; you get a lot of flavors going on as you retrohale. You only get flavours when you retrohale, which is a pain in the ass if you ask me. This tobacco feels more like an incense than anything.

P.s I've had greater pipe smoking experiences with cheaper blends.

I recently picked up a pouch of Captain black dark by mistake. I was going for Captain black royal. It wasn't bad, but kind of bland. Didn't detect too much flavor. However a very plesant room note. I bought a pouch of Captain black gold and mixed them together. (Witch is more or less CB Royal). It's best as a blending tobacco.

Given the limited choices of pipe tobaccos here in Tehran (Iran), amongst about 20 brands or so, such as Borkum Riff, Colts, Mac Baren, Planta, etc., and having tried some of these aromatics, it was a delight to discover this Captain Black Dark blend as a non-inhaler, and a cigar puffer looking for a change of pace. And recommended it to my brother-in-law who has been smoking (inhaler) Captain Black Round Taste for many years. I believe this CB Dark is the most refined of all CBs. With almost no tongue bite, and a nice and round aroma. And milder in strength than maybe all other CB blends. I had smoked pipes for a few years before and inhaling at the time. My favorite then and the mildest one that I could smoke was Borkum Riff ultra-light. Nowadays after I was told how to smoke cigars and even cigar leaf pipe tobaccos, and getting used to it by not inhaling and getting the same nicotine effects, my preference being mild-medium, by puffing this CB Dark blend, I came to the conclusion that it is definitely mild or light. Very suitable for those looking for a light smoke.

* For non-inhalers, a simple way of making a cigar leaf blend, using Colts American Mixture pipe tobacco, is listed with all the details under Scandinavian Tobacco Group (STG), Colts American Mixture reviews, if someone wished to know.

The taste I get is licorice. It's very pleasant. As with many aromatics, the bite depends on how you puff and how long you let it dry before you smoke it. Good burn qualities, lights easy and stays lit a good while. It causes my mouth to water, which may contribute to some slight gurgling. The room note is inoffensive. Is it as good as CB Regular? I think it will be fair to say after I've smoked as many pouches of this as the Regular. But it's a contender. For me it's definitely better than the Premium Editions.

This is the same stuff that "Captain Black Dark", now produced by Skandinavian. This is the same as these:

http://www.tobaccoreviews.com/blend/5506/lane-limited-captain-black-dark http://www.tobaccoreviews.com/blend/9356/captain-black-dark http://www.tobaccoreviews.com/blend/5505/scandinavian-tobacco-group-stg-captain-black-dark

It is no more produced by Lane. This is a mixture composed mainly by Black Cavendish tobacco. For me,this is good, but no surpasses The Captain Black Royal Blend. the best Lane-Skandinavian Blend
Pipe Used: some, brazilian and imported.
