I know this tobacco only now. It is an excellent pure Black Cavendish. Notes of Cocoa, Coffee. Sweat, Mild and slow burning. 3.5 Stars for thei high quality, therefore, i prefer the Captain Black Royal, one of my favorite tobaccos. Attention: This was recently branded by Lane, but now is produced by the Scandinavian Group. This Blend is the same that is described in these links:

I guess I want my tobacco to taste like tobacco, not saturated with coatings & chemicals. Very pleasant room note-very mild. For me - a nasty after taste with a little tongue bite. I guess I'll keep plenty of ole reliable PA around.

I was shocked! Bought a pouch of Dark on a whim simply because I like to try drug store blends occasionally and got one Hell of a good smoke. This is one of the best aromatics I've ever had. The toppings are a hodgepodge of flavors but they amazingly come together to create a delicious smoke. No bite, just a smooth, gentle, soft experience. Not overly sweet but right on head for my personal taste. I won't try to describe the flavor as I think every smoker going to find it a bit different. Highly recommended.

This is by far my favorite Captain Black to smoke thus far, I have tried royal and white and found this one most appealing. The sweetness of the tobacco was slight, with a wonderful marshmallow and vanilla taste that was mild and enjoyable. This was a great smoke while attempting to lure some trout out of the streams in Pennsylvania.

Smoked great out of the bag and right into a Missouri Meerschaum second. I packed it a little looser and let it really take its time in heating up.

My father in law commented when I lit the pipe he could smell it downstream and was looked forward to each time the wind carried it down to him.

The flakes are dark and coarse out of the bag, making it look strong and intimidating. But the pouch note is just as sweet as any typical Captain blend. Packing your pipe it feels oddly and unnaturally spongy, unlike any other tobacco I've tried. And the smoking experience? Well, make sure you dry it out for a while. The taste is very subdued (a good thing!) Topping is not overpowering but at the end of the day I'm kinda just getting the taste of a sweet smoke out of the bowl, maybe a toasted marshmallow kind of flavor. Not offensive but not interesting either. Kinda seems to be a deeper, less sweet version of CB Original, and I said I'd smoke that in a pinch, same goes for the Dark. In fact, I'll take the Dark over the original any time.

An oldie but goody as they say, the dearly beloved or harshly slandered, Lane Limited blend of Captain Black Dark throws an anchor into the pipe and what a rocking impact it makes! This midnight hued granola of roughly coarse-cut Cavendish (not ribbon IMO) packs a smorgasbord of gusto that will keep you guessing as to what old Ahab has up his twisted sleeve. The tobacco-laden frigate sways within a sea seeped of assorted flavorings, so hang on to the sideboard as CB Dark expulses you into an ocean of moving turbulence.

With a tart and darkly sugared pouch note, undulating sprays of deep heady coffee, rich molasses, cocoa, caramel-vanilla, dark fruitiness, splendid licorice, and suggestive maple sends waves of flavor crashing and bounding spiritly over a submissive earthly Cavendish zest. An immersed texture rolls boldly forward in a buttery, thick and densely darkened sweetness, as the ambience of its complexity makes an impressive aromatic statement overall.

Riding upon this course, one delights along in a highly seasoned charter of delightful taste as CB Dark bow casts a pleasurable swell for an extended sailing. This blend has lots of flavorful character bottom-line if that is unclear at this point, ha ha. And yes, it is Captain Black for those who might be put off by just that thought alone.

With quality mechanical attributes, CB Dark burns cool, slowly, and even thereby invoking a satisfying journey. Given that this is a 100% Cavendish blend, the volume of smoky pillows produced are decidedly thick and graciously stoked in constitution. As it expires, the mixture imparts a lovely dark sugared and sweetly zest that hangs upon the air in a comforting manner. An “ahoy” in my book any day. I’m quite happy I signed onboard once again. I do suggest you given the Captain quarters and join me among the crew of improbable converts. 3.0 pipes.

GREAT room note but I just wished it would taste as well. Another vanilla offering from the good Capt. The tin smell is not natural and the tobacco is very sticky. First-round I did not let it air out and received a healthy tongue bite. Lesson learned but it's still not my favorite. I will enjoy what I have but will move on to other brands as I am still exploring this wonderful world.

This is far and away the best pipe tobacco I have ever tasted. I cannot find anything negative to report on, not that I wish to. This, in my opinion, is simply superb, it smells good in the container, it produces a thick, fragrant smoke that is especially delightful for those, like myself, who like to play with blowing smoke rings. Unlike most I've tried, this burns equally well in all my pipes and that's unusual. The taste is good, neither too weak nor too strong its a complex yet smooth flavour that rewards mouth rolling, retro inhaling from mouth to nose and is equally pleasant to either. It entices you to play with it, its the best way I can describe it ...and yet...its especially rewarding for a long, slow, reflective smoke just sipping it enough to stay alight. I think I may not bother trying any more tobaccos and as the final seal of approval I just bought 1lb of it and will make sure to get more before it all gone.

Captain Black,IMHO, is the best of a good line of blends. It does need a bit of drying time, but once dried a little, it loads and lights easily. The toppings are there but do not sublimate the tobaccos. Burns to a gray, fluffy ash with little moisture in the bowl. This could easily replace CB White as their best seller. A very good beginner blend. Also, a good blend as a relief from heavier aromatics and a nice change of pace from English blends.

This is a mild, good tasting, straightforward Cavendish. Burns cool and very satisfying. Simple and clean-tasting, nothing artificial tasting.

This could be an everyday cavendish or a nice break for those regularly smoking more complex tobaccos.

Sometimes less is more.
