Erik Stokkebye 4th Generation 1897

(3.00)
Erik Paul, his Grandfather, was an entrepreneur and collector who loved to travel and experience many things. The 1897 blend is a colorful combination of light, golden Virginias, bronze Burley and a touch of black cavendish. The base of rich vanilla combines with notes of mild, sweet honey for a gentle aromatic sweetness. The 1897 has more black cavendish in it and has more sweetness in terms of the vanilla flavors, and it is a little bit milder.

In short: a Danish blend that makes a quality aromatic tobacco - and as such a treat for lover of aromatics, but not for those who prefer non-aromatics. I rate it 2/4 with some sense of dissatisfaction, as it neither accurately displays my lack of appreciation of the blend, nor how someone into aromatics would enjoy it.

The smell from the tin is great. It is soft, not mellow but also not overwhelmingly sweet. The burleys, virginias and the clearly presents black cavendish make for a nice brown and black palette.

The smoke is soft, steady, burning fast but not too hot given that it is not rushed. There is silky sugar, vanilla and some honey. Not high on strenght but that is probably not what you want when you smoke this. Will leave the mouth dry more than usual when smoked all day,

The room note will actually be enjoyed by non-smokers.

The tin note reminds me of very buttery Danish cookies with an added floral touch from the vanilla. The black Cavendish, Burleys and Virginias are all there. They ribbons feel a tad on the humid end but that's readily fixed with a few minutes of open air. The bits are pliable and the cuts consistent in size, all making it easy to sort and pack.

The pre-draw mirrors the tin note. The initial char may challenge you by requiring a few attempts but the bowl will burn nicely thru with proper attention. There's a touch of spiciness from the Burleys over the roof the mouth and upon retrohale. The black cavendish ensures a gratifying weight on the palate. The honey is there as you stoke it but, surprisingly, rather understated. The room note mixes the Burleys and vanilla with a hint of honey, giving of a muffin-like aroma. The overall mouth taste remains slightly sweet with the burleys' oakiness mixing in with the buttery and even fruity flavors. The bouquet from the tin note mixes nicely over the tongue. It's balanced in its flavors, remaining dense in umami through the bowl.

I really enjoy this blend. It gets better the slower you pace yourself. It's an aromatic that I could smoke all day: pleasing, rich and uncomplicated.

Of the aromatics I have had, which honestly is a quite extensive list of varying price ranges, this is by far the best. Tin note rivals W.O. Larsen, which always have heavenly notes out of the tin. It is very moist, and I thought about drying it, but I am glad I did not. It still lit and smoked well, and the flavor was wonderful. Heavy vanilla, slight honey at first, but lost the honey the deeper I got into the bowl. Overall wonderful smoke.

I put 4 stars for their 1957 mixture which is fascinating. Their 1897 is less inspiring. Small honey flavour (which might be a bonus compared to the brands people who do not smoke think about when speaking about pipe tobacco...) in the tin and not really noticeable when smoking. That said it is worth a try.

Got this one a couple of years in a tobacco club selection. Being a curious smoker I popped the tin open, dumped in in my bacco plate and gave it a good mix up to let it breath. Tin note of Vanilla bean with faint honey essence, very pleasing to the nose. A bit wet but I loaded an old clean briar up and gave it a go. Found it to be weak and monotone but I pushed through none the less. Upon finishing the bowl I put the remainder of the tin in a mason jar, labeled it up and screwed the lid tight. No other contact with it besides the usual monthly shake up and moisture check of my cellar. A few days ago I decide that 2 plus of quite time was enough penal time for this lad so I loaded up a pipe and let the fire roll. Reading my previous notes I felt this blend had changed, it had become a good balanced smoke with both tobacco and dressing coming through in harmony. With that being said, it is not my favorite aro but it is a blend that merits a good word. If one likes vanilla Aros this tobacco is worth a try, aging may or may not be required. This blend as others I have rated stand on their own with no comparison to others. They are what they are, attempts to blend something that has taste appeal.

This is my kind of aromatic. it burns very well after drying for 1.5-2 hours and actually tastes-and doesnt just smell-like vanilla. has a nic-kick that other aros ive tried completely lacked. Tin note smells strongly of vanilla and a bit of honey. can burn hot, so take your time.

Like a few others, I quite liked this tobacco. There is a medium amount of vanilla and fruit flavors. It almost tastes a bit like fruit cake without all the spices. Its a nice quality tobacco and a great everyday sweet smoke that doesn't overpower you. I can't speak to people having wet tins, all of the tins I bought were as moist as they were supposed to be and all around it has been a good experience. I recommend this tobacco to anyone who enjoys lightly fruity aromatics.

This is by far my favorite aromatic tobacco. All of the components are top quality, and are perfectly complimented by the sweet vanilla flavor. It burns without a problem, and the room note is sure to please even the most discriminating noses. No bite, no burn, just a great relaxing smoke. It is a bit pricey, but you get what you pay for and it is well worth it.
