Peterson Standard Mixture

(3.20)
A balanced blend of Virginia, latakia and Turkish tobaccos, fine rich flavour.
Notes: Descriptions from old Dunhill store catalogs: A blend of the choicest matured Virginia and selected Turkish tobaccos, each specially imported by Alfred Dunhill, the Virginia gives a rich flavour and touch of natural sweetness while the presence of the Turkish leaf imparts a grand aroma, this mixture possess a soft mellow flavour difficult to define but recognized at once by every pipe smoker: probably best described as ‘nutty’. [Latakia and Oriental tobaccos blended with flue-cured grades from east Carolina and Georgia, lightly toasted in our drying drum-1985]. Formerly known as Dunhill Standard Mixture, STG has changed the brand name from "Dunhill" to "Peterson".

I notice that the word "balance" appears in many, many of the reviews of this blend. I see it also appears in the description. I couldn't possibly agree more with that sentiment. This is about as well balanced as an English gets. This is one fine smoke. All three components contribute very nearly equally. The Oriental lags a little at first, but doesn't take long to begin pulling it's weight. Overall I get near equal notes of smoke, wood, sweetness, hay, and spice with slightly lesser notes of butter and salt. It's very smooth and the burn is cool and near perfect. I can't find a single criticism to level against this fine tobacco.

Medium in body and taste. No added flavorings and the sweetness seems to be all natural. Hits all the right buttons for me.

The Dunhill Standard Mixture is a nicely blended mixture of orientals, latakia, and Virginias in that order. Standard is well behaved in loading and burning, a very amicable weed to handle. Tin note and flavor give you orientals up front with latakia very close behind with Virginia bringing up a not too distant rear. Medium bodied with a mild/medium nicotine punch. A little too strong for enjoying during much activity but slightly lacking on neurochemistry for fueling solutions to the problems of the world. A very good tobacco, but for me, it's at an awkward place between the thinking pipe and the doing pipe.

Appearance: A slighly broad ribbon cut, about equal parts medium and dark colors. Ribbons are quite uniform, typical Dunhill attention to detail

Aroma: Lots of Virginia base, with Latakia and Turkish in the background. The aroma leads you to believe that the balance is the star.

Packing: Packs easily in most pipes, group 3 and up.

Lighting: Typical lighting procedure, not too quick or too slow.

Initial flavor: The Va comes across first, with authority and some strength. The Turkish and Latakia add their flavors soon after, and the balance I expected is there..

Mid-bowl: A classic English/Oriental blend with good layering of the components, but nothing too dramatic. Actually somewhat plain tasting, and unassuming, but very likeable This is what I started smoking English tobaccos for.. No gurgles noted.

Finish: Well behaved right to the end, leaves a gray ash and nothing else.

Summary: Not as complex as some of the newer blends, but not as challenging to get into the zone with. A real classic with unique charm, probably one of Dunhill?s oldest.

The deliciously smoky taste of the finest Syrian Latakia pervades this fine blend, another of Dunhill's great age-old classics. (Yes! Latakia blends taste like Latakia, ie: smoky. Outrageous, isn't it?)

This is slightly less robust than the LONDON mixture, but still an official Dunhill example of what an English mixture with Latakia ought to be. It occupies the middle ground between NIGHTCAP and LONDON at the heavier end of the English spectrum and, in declining order of strength, STANDARD MIXTURE MILD and EARLY MORNING PIPE at the lighter end.

965, which has Cavendish leaf in it and is therefore a so-called "Scottish" blend, or the clearly Balkanic DURBAR and APPERITIF, cannot be logically compared to this line of "London"-type, Latakia-dominated English blends.

STANDARD is precisely that. People who do not care for English-style blends need not apply.

Another interesting blend from Dunhill.when you open the tin you get a balanced flavour between virginias and oriental/latakia.the smell is between citruses ,fruits ,spices woods and coals.has a little moisture but needs no drying time.packs ok lights easy and burns nicelly, slow and cool.the flavours are mostly from the orientals then virginias and latakias in the backround.spices ,woods camp fire in combination with grass, citruses, sourness and some sweet notes from the latakia.some puffs reminded me cigar taste.the nicotine level is almost medium without any chance of biting.burns till the end to perfect ash and leaves a clear bowl.not an all day smoke.ideal for for evening smoking experience.definitelly a must try! In comparison with standar mixture mellow the tastes are deeper with more compoments from orientals and latakias.the virginia tastes are less than the mellow one.

Dunhill Standard is great full bodied English blend. I read lot's of people talk about the varying iterations of Dunhill tobacco's over time and I get the sense that people think that when you buy a brand, even if you buy the recipe that you can and should replicate it exactly. I have always found this a pointless reference. If you smoke cigars you will notice that with a natural product that relies on nature there is always variance even with the same stick from the same brand, size and even the same roller (yes I have access to some cigars that year in and year out I can get from the same old gentleman that has been rolling at the store location for 20 years). In addition I like to read reviews and provide reviews that reflect the quality of what I am smoking, not what I did or what someone else did. Now let me get off my soap box and review... I love the Dunhill ribbon cut, it looks great and consistently packs well; 'ol reliable. The tin note is latakia forward, not as pungent as Lat bombs or even other current Dunhill blends like MM 965. There is also a sour woody note and a hint of grassy Virginia. This came perfect out of the tin, no dry time needed. I have to admit that I got caught up in all the hype of some of the popular English blends and chased many of them and smoked them with vigor, although I had purchased 2 tins of Standard mixture, one was included in my first pipe tobacco purchase. I have been through a tin and a half and this stuff is really quite good. I apologize to Dunhill for underestimating this blend. The sweet smoky Cyprian Latakia is evident throughout the bowl however it is very well balanced with the orientals which are also ever present. The Virginia's were tough for me to tease out in the flavor profile. I get mostly toasty smoky flavors with nutty, woody orientals. The orientals are a bit spicy and provide a slightly sour note almost citrus (maybe that is the Virginia, dunno). Burns to a fine gray ash. I have noticed (at least to me) this is a great English for a cob. In corn cob pipes it seems to sweeten the blend noticably, I have not experience that with other blends to a meaningful degree. It seems to "beef" up the Latakia and amplifies the nuttiness of the Orientals. This may be unique to my palate but I would encourage people to try this in a cob if you have one.

An extremely short and fine Ribbon Cut, much more a Shag Cut. Too fine for a pipe tobacco, anyway. Moisture in tin is rather high, which is unusual for a Dunhill. Stuffing and smoking mechanics are not ideal. It is a mellow, tasty, harmonious mixture, but somewhat one-dimensional. Nothing particular that would call for your attention. The nicotine level is about medium. I should call this a typical, classical, balanced English Mixture. It is a satisfying all-day smoke.

I was not impressed by this mixture when I opened the tin, but it was significantly better after breathing for about a month.

I was able to get a nice sweetness, and the Latakia is nice, but not overpowering. I got best results with a very slow smoke. I thought it became a little flat during the last 1/3 of the bowl, but the sweetness was there the whole time. Nicotine level was medium/high. Burn was clean with no BS.

This is not my favorite Dunhill blend, but it's a solid smoke if aged a bit and smoked slowly.

Is one of my Favorite Tobaccos in the World.

. A well blended, well combined, mixture of Virginia, Turkish and Latakia Tobaccos.

very Complex, only the Latakia flavour overcomes the other flavours.

One of the best English Mixtures, suitable for smokers that feel strong Latakia ammounts.

In my oppinion,is even better than other Dunhill's Legends as Early Morning, 965, NightCap and RoyalYacht.

Note: The new version, prepared by Orlik, and in the Can is wrote only "Virginia and Turkish" and "Dunhil Standard Mixture" is this stuff. Is que equivalent of the old "Dunhill Standard Medium Mixture".

What can I write about Dunhill Standard Mixture that hasn't been written? Nothing really. I can only vouch that it is, in my opinion, one of the best English tobaccos on the market.

The tobacco comes in the familiar Dunhill tin manner which makes it easy to pack and has the perfect moisture content. I only wish they made this blend in bulk.

Once you have your pipe going, smell your bowl -- the latakia provides an enriching aroma. That smell alone is a wonderful fragrance and I find myself constantly sniffing at the bowl throughout.

The overall experience is well balanced and medium all around. Nicotine level - perfect, strength - perfect, aroma - perfect.

The only other blend, to me, that edges out Standard Mixture is Squadron Leader, but for different reasons. For those that love traditional English blends, Standard Mixture should be in your regular rotation, as it is in mine.

Now, for those who love Nightcap, and I'm one of them, you may be asking how I would compare Nightcap to Standard Mixture. Nightcap, to me, is like a fine whiskey that you enjoy once in a while. I could not smoke Nightcap everyday due to its high nicotine content. I could smoke Standard Mixture everyday.
