Peterson My Mixture 965

(3.18)
Peterson's My Mixture 965 is for the connoisseurs of full bodied tobacco. Choicest small latakia imparts a rich nutty flavor and coolness. Macedonia bright is added for sweetness. Brown cavendish completes this blend beloved by English mixture aficionados.
Notes: From its inception and until 1981, it was produced by Dunhill of London.Production was then transferred to Murrays in Belfast who like Dunhill were owned by Carreras Rothmans. Murrays produced it until late 2004 when BAT, who by that time had taken over Rothmans International, closed the Belfast factory. Since then it has been produced by Orlik, Denmark, part of the Scandinavian Tobacco Group. Pipe Tobacco Hall of Fame Inductee. Formerly known as Dunhill My Mixture 965, STG bought the rights to some Dunhill blends and changed the brand name from "Dunhill" to "Peterson".

Sound "Taps", swear out a warrant on the blender and unleash the dogs of war. Somebody peed in my wheaties.

Tin purchased January 2008. Something has gone terribly wrong with this blend, once upon a time the premier Scottish/English. I've seen drunks with better coordination. None of the elements come together with any harmony until the bowl says "Uncle", and by then it's a bit late. The quality of the leaf selection isn't up to standards expected from the house that Alfred built. This one must be from the shed that Albert Duhill built out of old cardboard boxes.

Thank God I still have a few pounds of the eighties mixture stockpiled in case of emergency.

I hereby declare a state of emergency.

Surely, this is not the Dunhill 965 of old that I remember with such affection. I know it is no longer made by Dunhill, which is perhaps the problem. It has more of a slightly aromatic Danish taste (too much cavendish and not enough latakia, I suspect), not the medium-strong, sturdy, classic English blend I used to smoke. It's a quite pleasant tobacco, but it's not Dunhill 965. It's something else.

This reminds me a great deal of DH's EMP and seems to my palate to be just a notch above EMP in fullness, a small notch. DH's Nightcap is still the flagship in this line. I just like more latakia than this offers. No tongue bite at all and I was puffing pretty vigorously.

I think this is a fine offering and will suit many quite well. For me, I will smoke the rest mixed in with a stronger blend and probably not purchase any more...though I do think this is quality smoke. My sample is based on the bulk offering and not the tin.

This is a great tobacco. It tasted wonderfull and smells super. Indoors the aroma is a bit strong for non-smokers, but they do enjoy getting a 'wiff' of it outside. 965 has no bite, DGT's well, stays lit, and burns at a medium rate. Not much moisture produced either. A very pleasent change of pace from full virginia tobaccs. Well worth including in your tobacc rotation.

This new 965 is a waste of time & money. Toooo bad the new blender had to screw it up this way. A very good tobacco has been lost to the world. I won't be purchasing any more of this new 965 !!!

YUCK!! Crash and Burn! Nothing like the Dunhill of old. I couldnot believe this is the 965 I had smoked on a regular basis years ago. No richness in taste I onced remembered from this ol favorite. I give it 2 stars only for what it used to be. Sorry, but its a prop airplane wanting to be a JET.

A memorable blend, but not for good reason- I wonder what variety of Cavendish it is that Dunhill?s successors use for this blend, American or English. It would surprise me none were I to learn that it is American, in which case, Blaaahhh!

This blend has a following- indeed some of my friends- but I for one can do without it ever again. I recommend this blend to the pipe smoker who enjoys English Aromatics that produce copious amounts of thick black perfumey smoke, but it is not a blend for me.

While it's far too dull to earn a spot in my rotation, I would recommended 965 to others looking for a smooth and very smokable English blend that pleases without being even remotely overwhelming.

This blend is something of an enigma for myself. Upon opening the tin my nose is overwhelmed by a full peat-like aroma intermixed with what seems to be like burning charcoal (I assume this is the latakia I have read so much about here)-The tin smell reminds me of an autumn evening with coal fires burning in the distance, unfortunately this is where the romanticism ends. Three lights are required to get this lit and the start is a bit labour intensive although it burns better as the bowl progresses.

Thick clouds of strong bluish smoke arise from the tobacco, but strong should not be read pejoratively as it is rather pleasant and enjoyed by nonsmokers I have been around. I do not know why but whilst smoking this the back of my throat develops a 'tickle' early on that becomes more aggravted as the bowl progresses and it can also be a touch hot if puffed too rigourously.

I really wanted to like this blend but it just does not agree with my mouth which becomes irritated by 965, even more so upon a relight. I find the smoke to be really quite harsh and unrefined. Moreover this leaves an unpleasnat aftertaste in the mouth as if one had been sucking on a piece of coal for half an hour.

Undoubtedly this is a fine mix but I wish the tin aroma translated into the smoke produced. To be sure this packs a nicotine wallop as I felt slightly dizzy and sedated afterward, as if I had had a little too much to drink-a rather pleasant feeling! I will probably finish the tin but will be unlikely to buy it again-while not for me this may be ideal for a cigarette smoker who wants to gravitate towards a pipe. About 5.5/10

I just don't "get" this blend. Despite excellent reviews this tobacco seems very flat and one dimensional. I can't seem to acquire a taste for it and having tried multiple times with several pipes, I am giving up on it.

I give it 2 stars out of respect for the many other, more experienced smokers who love it. Just goes to prove that not everyone's palate is created equal.

This was the second English mixture I ever tried, the first being McClelland?s Frog Morton. Needless to say, it was a bit of a shock. The two have little in common, in terms of taste. 965 packs a big nicotine punch, and I found it to be too strong for my tastes. About a year later, having tried a couple dozen other English mixtures, I gave 965 another try. I assumed that my initial reaction was the result of being a newbie to the world of Latakia blends. I enjoyed it more than I had initially. However, I still find it to be stronger in the nicotine department than most other English blends I had tried (except for other Dunhill blends). It has a certain ?peppery? quality that I don?t really care for. It is a fine blend, but far from my first choice in an English blend. If I am going to smoke a Dunhill blend, I much prefer the smoothness of London Mixture or the richness of Durbar, or the unique taste of Nightcap.

I have to respectfully disagree with those who proclaim 965 to be the definitive English blend by which all others must be judged. 965 may well be the best-selling English blend, and in many smokers? opinion the best-tasting English blend, but that doesn?t make it the definitive English blend. Call me a purist, but in my opinion the use of cavendish in this blend disqualifies it from meeting the classic definition of an English blend (i.e. a blend that epitomizes the definition of classic English smoking mixture?a Virginia base with Latakia and perhaps other orientals added). If you want to taste a truly definitive English mixture, try Gawith?s Squadron Leader, Robert Lewis? Tree Mixture, Pease?s Renaissance, Esoterica?s Margate, or perhaps even Dunhill?s London Mixture; if you want to taste one of the most popular and best-selling English mixtures around today, then give 965 a spin.
