Peterson My Mixture 965
(3.18)
Peterson's My Mixture 965 is for the connoisseurs of full bodied tobacco. Choicest small latakia imparts a rich nutty flavor and coolness. Macedonia bright is added for sweetness. Brown cavendish completes this blend beloved by English mixture aficionados.
Notes: From its inception and until 1981, it was produced by Dunhill of London.Production was then transferred to Murrays in Belfast who like Dunhill were owned by Carreras Rothmans. Murrays produced it until late 2004 when BAT, who by that time had taken over Rothmans International, closed the Belfast factory.
Since then it has been produced by Orlik, Denmark, part of the Scandinavian Tobacco Group.
Pipe Tobacco Hall of Fame Inductee.
Formerly known as Dunhill My Mixture 965, STG bought the rights to some Dunhill blends and changed the brand name from "Dunhill" to "Peterson".

I purchased this from a bulk bag from a local (OTC) "Tinder Box". It lights and burns well. I?m just not a fan of the burnt black licorice flavor.

As a beginning pipe smoker this is one of the first tobaccos I purchased. There were so many reviews on this site I figured it must be something worth trying.
Halfway through my 2 oz bulk bag, I dislike this tobacco intensely.
First, it is too strong. Not as unpleasant as Nightcap, but when I go running for four double whiskies after a smoke, I'm sorry but it's too strong.
Second, the flavoring is very dry. Not even a hint of sweetness to round out the taste. It's not a bad taste, and if it were a weaker tobacco I could see myself smoking it on a rare, rare occasion.
As it is now I am flicking through some cheap aromatic blends to mix with this to get it down the hatch. I'm too poor to just throw it away, so I'll have to use up some perfectly good berry or vanilla flavored aromatic to get rid of this unpleasant smoke.

Update December, 2010
The much anticipated new 965 is finally here. It is a good tasting, flavorful blend. Cut a little finer than the original, it smokes cool and burns well leaving only a white ash.
Tin aroma is non existant. I was hoping for at least a semblance of what I enjoyed years ago. No such luck. The taste, while good, is nothing to write home about. I'm sure this blend will appeal to many, but I will go to one of the many English/Scotch blends in my rotation. If you happen to buy a tin of 965, adding something like Penzance, will get you a bit closer to the original. It's really unfortunate that Dunhill couldn't produce (or license) this tobacco to be manufactured in Great Britain as it was in the past. C'est la vie.
ORIGINAL REVIEW Putting a decent but unremarkable wine into a vintage bottle doesn't change the wine. Putting a decent but unremarkable tobacco into a tin and calling it 965 doesn't make it the classic 965. The new blend is a tobacco that I can tolerate and even moderately enjoy as I did when I needed to purchase a tin while out of town recently. My choices were limited to 965 and several pouches of Danish aromatics which I wouldn't smoke under any circumstances.
Unless you're in a bind, try one of the many fine English blends on these pages if looking for something new.

I got this and it seemed dry out of the can. the first bowl I smoked was alright, but everyone after that just seemed too hot with no taste. I don't recommend this.

The famous My Mixture 965 from Dunhill. Definitely, this is outstanding tobacco in terms of quality. I will give it that. But.
Upon opening, I am welcomed by a beautiful long cut tobacco with occasional little flakes of dark brown leaf. Despite the fact that the amount of Latakia is rather small, acoording to the description, it smells pretty smoky.
I can smoke 965 until half way, than things become nasty for me. I tried, and retried about a dozen times to finish the bowl; then I just forgot about 965. It's a marvelous tobacco, but its richness and strength is just overwhelming for me. I can't see how it's a cool smoke. Not really recommended, despite its high quality.

I once put all my Dunhills in a ziplock bag together loose and mixed, As I was tired of 'English'. I'll be damned if I really couldnt tell the difference. Dunhills are way too similar to fool with.

Whoa! Gents! I'm still dog-paddling my way through my very first tin of #965 but already know it will likely be my last. Whew! This blend is not at all for your typical sane piper, Lads. This is for the guy who eats live bearmeat and makes his Manhattens with bourbon & gasoline. Aiii Carumba! Am sure the Dunhill quality is there and that there are several of you Jedi around who dote on this hyper-warp weed but that doesn't make it a national heartthrob by any means. Will give it 1 star but only because I'm afraid to anger it. Lawd ha' Mercy!
