Peterson My Mixture 965
(3.18)
Peterson's My Mixture 965 is for the connoisseurs of full bodied tobacco. Choicest small latakia imparts a rich nutty flavor and coolness. Macedonia bright is added for sweetness. Brown cavendish completes this blend beloved by English mixture aficionados.
Notes: From its inception and until 1981, it was produced by Dunhill of London.Production was then transferred to Murrays in Belfast who like Dunhill were owned by Carreras Rothmans. Murrays produced it until late 2004 when BAT, who by that time had taken over Rothmans International, closed the Belfast factory.
Since then it has been produced by Orlik, Denmark, part of the Scandinavian Tobacco Group.
Pipe Tobacco Hall of Fame Inductee.
Formerly known as Dunhill My Mixture 965, STG bought the rights to some Dunhill blends and changed the brand name from "Dunhill" to "Peterson".

Pretty straight forward English. Fairly complex with a nice bit of spice as the bowl burns down. Similar to Margate and Sutliff Eng #1 with more sweetness and less mustiness. The nic hit can sneak up on you. Nose note is in and out of sweet spice and toasted wood. Not amazing, but damn sure not bad. ☆☆☆12

To me, Petersons MM 965 and Standard Mixture are basically the same blend but with some minor differences.
Standard Mixture is more floral from the Orientals while 965 comes across as a wee bit stronger - with slightly more Latakia and some sweetness from the Cavendish.
Although 965 has a tad more Latakia than Standard Mixture, both are pretty mild blends and with both blends the Latakia plays second fiddle to the Virginias and Orientals. 965 can be a bit sharper in the mouth than Standard Mixture but the mouth finish is also sweeter which is a nice touch.
(965 does remotely resemble Peterson's Old Dublin but in a "Latakia lite" way.)
965 or Standard Mixture? Its a toss up, really. Both blends lack the intensity of additional Latakia that I prefer but both blends also satisfy an itch when I'm in the rare mood for less Latakia.
I do wish STG would/could bring back London Mixture. That would provide a little better contrast to the current versions of MM 965 and Standard Mixture because as it stands, the differences between the two are pretty subtle.

Growing on me At first I was unsure if it was for me, Tin note was different ( olives ). But it doesn’t taste like that, it’s sweet and smoky. It was my first Latakia blend, going to cellar it for awhile and see if it changes. But I can’t fault it, it’s decent.

I had my first bowls of this after months of smoking cigar blends exclusively. I'm sure that plays a hand in my experience. My review of 965 starts by pointing out the Cavendish impacts the smoke for me personally by smoothing and sweetening the blend. That's not my cup of tea regrettably. It results in a balanced yet boring flavor profile. I struggle to taste the other tobacco varietals. I'm a big big fan of EMP and Nightcap. I smoke outside in the wind and weather. 965 seemed too smooth and subtle for those conditions. I'll have to try another tin indoors and see if I can boost my rating.

MM 965 is one of the first english blends I tasted, after Frog Morton and Uhle's Bishop's Move. Between then and now I have smoked over 200 different blends. This is a much more refined and less latakia forward blend the Uhle' s and was my first experience with how blending style can really change similar tobacco blends. MM965 had a nice balance between the orientals and the latakia. I had a hard time discerning which was the main flavor, something I really enjoyed. At the end of the day I think the oriental spice comes through a bit more than the latakia. It is really so well rounded it is hard to commit, that is what makes this blend so great, in my opinion. The cavendish may be the star in this blend as it seems to provide a slight sweetness to the smoke but I would guess is the secret to the harmonizing of the orientals and the latakia. Dunhill blends are among my favorite ribbon cut tobacco's, easy to pack and easy to light. The tin note was latakia forward and extremely pleasing. MM 965 is the "quintessential" English in my book and one that should be used to indoctrinate new pipe smokers into what an English should be. That doesn't' make it the "best English" but it is to me, what an English should be and all should posses in some manner.

This is noted as one of those legend blends. It is really quite a good blend. Now I'm a big fan of Frog Morton and Frog Morton's Cellar, and that is exactly what My Mixture 965 reminds me of. Smokey-sweet would be how I'd describe it. You get some of the latakia and the natural sweetness of the Virginia in it. Really a very smooth smoke.
I'd find this a really nice smoke for a mild summer or fall evening especially -- though it could be easily an all year and all day type of blend.
Quite tasty and a deserved reputation I think.
If you like Frog Morton or Frog Morton's Cellar, you'll like My Mixture 965, that's my take on it. (Which raises an interesting point. Many call the Frog Morton's "intro" blends, but I really do not buy that. Intro to what? Who is to say you -must- go on to heavier Latakia blends? No one, that is who. These are good blends, period.)
If the Frog Morton's ever disappear, they will be easily replaced by this blend for me. Quite happy with this one.

Looks like Dunhill is making some efforts to destroy the reputation of 965, offering a extremely green, unripe tobacco. The protective paper in my tin was so white that I almost need sunglasses... The cut and moisture level are perfect as always, so I packed, lighted and... "Where´s that wonderful tobacco that I (and everybody else) used to love?". Well, it´s hidden in several layers of time.
Yes! Close the tin and let it rest, and wait... Wait very patiently indeed, like some months. Your patience will be rewarded and that harsh mixture will develop in the well-known, excellent, top notch quality of this almost perfect, flavorful, balanced mixture.
But then again, Dunhill must watch out for and standardize the right point to put this in market. This makes me reccomend it, but not highly recommend.

Very good balanced English blend. It starts out pretty much how it finishes. No bite, no gurgle, right ammount of moisture in the can....there is not much more that can be said about it than already has been said. A solid choice for an English blend. If you wander into a tobbaco shop and can't decide, this is a good pick. Not thought provoking but just a very fine blend thats not too strong to be enjoyed all day.
* 5/09/2015- one year of age and it really improved. Much more complex and rates a half star more than just three. Wish they would age it before turning loose on the market.

To me, this has always tasted like NIGHTCAP-Light. Not too light, mind you; the basic idea is the same as Nightcap, with some cavendish thrown in to make things a little creamier and smoother.
The result is a great blend, memorable in fact: less ecstasy-enducing than Nightcap perhaps, a little easier on the palate, especially in the beginning, where Nightcap can seem bitter, but a wonderful, full-flavoured English-style mélange, touchingly autumnal and true.

Dunhill 965 is probably the standard for full bodied English blends. 965 has nice full smoky, nutty smell to it. It is cut into very fine, long ribbons, which makes for easy packing and lighting. 965 is very full and can be unpleasant to some around you. 965 is almost too well balanced, as nothing really stands out about the blend, but that doesn't leave you thinking that it is anything but an excellent tobacco. If you are not used to it, 965 will make the room spin. Very nice tobacco.
