Picked up a tin of this a few months back, a brick and mortar smoke shop was having a pipe sale and I picked up an L?antra Canadian, feeling expansive I picked up a few tins of expensive tobacco. I forgot I had picked up a tin of Dunhill Light flakes. Easy to do for me, I mean I thought Nightcap was a real fine smoke and 965 is sort of the standard of an English blend, but when I think of an exceptional smoke Dunhill doesn?t spring to mind, especially the non English blends. I was not expecting as sublime and complex fine Virginian flake as this. With the exception of what must be a very mild light and non aggressive casing, this flake is almost as good as Reiner?s long golden flake minus the touch of perique. Beautiful light to mahogany flecked flakes neatly packed into the tin, the fine fig and prune scent of aged Virginian, and a delicate yet persevering complex taste. I?m afraid it?s my fault it?s off the market. That?s my luck see, I find something I could stick with for a while and it?s gone. The few month wait wasn?t a lame attempt at getting some aging in, just a mistake, just long enough for them to quit making it. Forgive me. Maybe I should say it wasn?t that good to keep everyone from feeling bad. If I had known I would have stocked up. I?m getting some Davidoff medallions in the mail, stocking up before the feds tax what?s left of my testicles; I?m hoping it will be similar to this late great flake. I?m guessing my tin was done by orlik instead of murrays though, reminded me of a more refined golden slice.

First let me say I love my Virginians and I employ a slower smoking cadence to derive the best results. Last weekend I had the time to line up three straight Virginians for comparison: Dunhill Light Flake (Murray?s), McC Xmas Cheer 05 & McBaren Virginian #1. Light Flake narrowly finished first to Xmas Cheer 05, with McB rounding out a quite respectful third. I feel all three are of supreme quality, so the smoking and flavor characteristics are my guide to preference. First I like to state my opinion that all tobaccos are cased and topped. Were genius is observed is when a blender?s craft is so subtle that tobacco and treatment marry into a sublime sum. Lt Flake, for me, is that Virginian tobacco. A delicious sweet tobacco taste, and if there is a floral/herbal note it is done with such a deft hand I couldn?t identify a specific note. The tobacco flavor strengthens when advancing down the bowl. When finished I feel satisfied, whereas Xmas Cheer has snuck up on me, at times. The perfect powdery ash confirms the absence of unwanted agents. I also prepared each tobacco by drying or airing the tobacco prior to fire. I find I virtually avoid all Virginian sting this way. Try all three yourself and let us know which is the best.

Dunhill Light Flake is a very high quality blend that undeniably provides for the transcendent enjoyment of pure Virginia leaf. The subtle caramel sweetness that lights upon one?s palate can be elusive if not smoked with thoughtfulness.
I get the impression that my tin, similar to some wines, may have been enjoyed ?before it?s time?...I have cellared some other tins with the hopes that they will improve with age.
Highly recommended.
A companion infusion: one part Drambuie with two parts Forty Creek Barrel Select Canadian Whisky...taken neat.
NOTE: (if I may...) I believe that Virginia tobacco?s are not ?air cured?, they are predominantly ?flue cured?...and only small amounts of lesser grade Virginias are ?fire cured? to be used in snuff, twist and plugs. A number of Virginia based tobaccos on this website state that they are ?air cured?...this is a curing method that is reserved for Burley leaf. (see: ?All About Tobacco? ? Milton M. Sherman ? 1970).

I had the pleasure of trying an unopened tin from 2003, and wow, some age did make a nice difference. This is a good flake, if you can still get it, and if smoked correctly is sweet and flavorful.

This was my first straight Virginia, many years ago, and it made me fell in love with this kind of tobacco. Later I found other blends more to my liking but I remember Light Flake as a very good tobacco. The last time I smoked it was about 4 years ago and it was very good. It was still a Murray Sons tin, so I know nothing about the new version.

First let me start by saying that this stuff is good!! I just finished my 6th bowl in the last few days and it has proven to be a nice VA flake.
I could not detect any casing upon smelling the lovely medium brown flakes, rippled with fine light stripes; nor did I notice any during the light up, or at any other time during my smoke.
The flakes rubbed out very easily and I found that breaking the strips into thirds and separating them into peices that fit well into the bowl did the job (Oh, plus I had dried the flakes for a few hours and this got the moisture level right where I like it).
Two charring lights and a true light were needed and then this fine smoke lit up well. It was a little hot initially and stung my tongue slightly, but then the heat subsided and things cooled down to a nice creamy smoke
I tasted sweet Virginia and not any casing, soapiness or any other unpleasant flavor....truly a nice gustatory/olfactory experience.
The flavor reminded me of freshly baked bread...as other reviewers had noticed...and thanks for this description...I couldnt really pin it down until I read that...on the nose! The flavor deepened as time elapsed and it took on a toasty, caramelized like flavor.
This is a nice blend, though it may not be as good as it once was...I still like it.

After reading the reviews of the learned gentlemen (and I presume, Ladies) of tobacco reviews, I went and purchased a tin, fell in love with it straight away, I had found my new passion, (again) the perfect morning smoke, a gentle dream to while away the hours, I would have to tear myself away from this to smoke something else in the evening. By now, I was realising that this was a tobacco of such fine quality and excellence, that I would stock up on this to some degree, in order never to be without. Imagine my horrror, nay, HORROR, that this imbibing nectar of the gods has been discontinued, it's like never to be seen again, it's recipe, taken from us, never again to be created under another name.
Blasphemy, BLASPHEMY I say!!!!! a decision, no doubt made by PHILISTINES of both dubious and doubtful parentage, woe betide them, and a plague be upon them and their house!!!!!
Yes I quite liked it and I'm sorry it's gone.

Wow! This flake is very good indeed! Buttery, creamy smoke, smooth and flavorful. If you have not yet tried this, do yourself a huge favor and do so. I give this four stars without hesitation. Yum!

This is one of the mildest flakes I've ever had the pleasure to try. The flavours are very subtle but have a good length. Flavours I encounterd are yeast, honey and I'm sure there's a slight tinge of caramel in there. The flakes rub out well straight from the tin and once alight smokes away slow and easy. I can't really fault this one has a refreshing change from all the full bodied cased tobacco I usually smoke and will always keep a tin on hand for those moments when nothing else but a viginian will do.
Excellent stuff.

This is high quality, mature, well cured Virginias that you can actually taste and enjoy by the end of the bowl, once the soapy flavor recedes.
The again, there are many quality Virginias that you can enjoy right from the start, without waiting for a nasty topping to fade away.
If you like Lakeland blends, this thing might be for you. To me, it's just soapy tobacco.
