What makes it Light? Not the color since this is a mixture of yellow to darker brown VAs and certainly not the overall strength. I'd guess that the tin aroma is from added flavoring although it might be a unique VA tobacco or processing technique. This disappears upon lighting and an exceptionally cool, mild, natural smoke results. Easily packed, it burns evenly without the need for relights. I don't rub out my flakes and this one has a tendency to feather on the edges when removing the slices from the tin. This left many small bits and pieces towards the end of the tin which smoked rather harshly. Overall, an enjoyable smoke that could be used all day.

I hate to disagree with the foregoing reviewers, especially the esteemed Eulenberg, but in my estimation Light Flake is a fatally flawed tobacco. Why? That damned soapy taste, which persists through at least the second relight. Like Peterson's Sherlock Holmes, DLF is a beautifully made, beautifully cut flake ruined by that weird lathering of sudsy taste that British tobaccos sometimes have. (Whose idea was this, anyway?) DLF smokes beautifully, too. A crime! Sigh... back to Marlin Flake, which I can count on to taste like tobacco, not Ivory.

I heartily agree with the great Eulenburg on this one. This is a wonderful flake, one of the best I've ever tasted. The flavor of this is very reminsicent of Peterson's Sherlock Holmes blend. I don't know if it's the Brazilian or Mysore tobacco which gives these two blends their distinctive tang, but whatever it is, i love it! This has a full tobacco flavor and punch with absolutely no bite. One could easily smoke it all day.
The name is perhaps a little unfortunate because "light" sounds a little wimpy and there is nothing wimpy about this stuff. This is a hearty, full flavored tobacco which every virginia lover should try. Many thanks to Murray's for yet another outstanding tobacco.
