Peterson Elizabethan Mixture

(3.04)
Notes: Elizabethan Mixture was launched by Dunhill and made in London until production was transferred to sister company Murray and Sons in 1981. It was made in Belfast until new owners BAT closed the Murray factory in 2005. Dunhill's Elizabethan combines pressed, darkened Virginias with a dose of perique (all ribbon-cut) to create an easy-to-enjoy blend with a tangy character and a bit of pepper spice. Elizabethan has been made since its 2013 reintroduction by STG after being unavailable since 2005, firstly under the Dunhill brand and now as a Peterson product after Dunhill withdrew their brand from the pipe tobacco market.

I had a tin of this so long ago that I think I am having false memories. I expected the tin note to be more fragrant and for it to smoke a little bit spicier. I think a lot though may have to do with my age, lack of sense of smell and taste rather than the tobacco itself. None the less, for me this one had a mild sweet hay scent from the tin and smoked exceptionally mild and smooth. Too mild and smooth I may add. I have almost finished a tin of this and I just do not get any ‘wow’ factor whatsoever. I think I will need to revisit this one but for now I can only give it a 2 star. Update: 9-4-21. I finally opened my one tin of this that I bought back in December of 1998. Almost 23 years ago I bought this when I was 39, tomorrow I will be 62. This tobacco was near perfect out of the tin with the fabled plume and tasted excellent. I shared this with some friends of mine at the pipe club and all enjoyed it.

I'll say the same thing here that I said about Nightcap - Dunhill knows how to make a great BLEND in the literal sense of the word. The taste of the smoke has a certain uniformity to it, rather than tasting individual components of the blend - and this is a good thing in my book. This also means that the flavor is more consistent from one bowl to the next.

Good in a cob or in a briar, in my experience it has been ready to smoke right from the tin - no drying time required. Packs easy, lights easy. It burns a little on the fast side of things though, so I prefer to smoke this in a larger chambered pipe, like my Bones fat author, a Peterson 68, or a MM Country Gentleman.

In my opinion, Elizabethan has the perfect amount of perique - here it is a condiment rather than the star of the show. There's a certain pepperiness to the smoke, but thankfully it's never overpowering.

I'm not a VaPer lover, but I am an Elizabethan lover. If Dunhill blends ever go away for good, this is probably the blend that I will miss the most.

This will be one I will miss once it gone. Want to get one or two more sleeves before it gone for good. A English friend taught me how to reall6 enjoy this blend. First pop a tin and jar it for several weeks. Because of the cut pack a little tighter than usual. Then light and smoke very slow. Slower the better. Be careful because the nicotine can sneak up on you. Wonderful taste of hay, sweet, spicy. Enjoy!

Dunhill - Elizabethan Mixture.

I posted a review on this years back when it was still a relatively new smoke to me, so thought this was one I had to re-do!

The blend is very unfluctuating with its sizes of ribbon, they're all quite delicate. The colour is also fairly steady: medium brown. Even though the contents of the tin are quite heavily compacted, once fluffed apart there isn't too much moisture in there.

Lighting? Easy. Burn? Once lit an issue with it can be the speed, because of the slight build; so I tend to be gentle with my puffing. Apart from the speed there's no problem with the burn, going clean to a white ash. The flavour? A quality VaPer one: the Virginia gives the mix some backbone, by bringing hay and citrus, with the Perique livening it, by giving a deep fruity note; I get more in the way of flavour from the Per side than just spice alone. Elizabethan doesn't really bite, unless it's pressured to do so.

I find the room-note quite nice, and the nicotine medium.

A good quality VaPer.

Recommended.

I find quite a few Vapers to be overwhelmingly strong or spicy or both. Elizabethan on the other hand, to its merit, is smooth and flavorful with measured spiciness and strength.

It lights easily and behaves perfectly as all Dunhill blends. Produces a voluminous smoke which combines the Virginia straw/hay-like flavours with Perique induced dried/stewed fruit (fig/plum) juiciness and as the bowl progresses it becomes mildly peppery. It's not as juicy as other Vapers (Scottish Cake, Ascanian, Tudor Castle) as here Virginias are quite hay-like, nor does the Perique add a "black" element which I find in St. James' flake or Davidoff's Flake Medallions. I find it a very well balanced blend with some sweetness and a cigarretty character as well.

Strength is medium and it is nicely delivered by the creamy/smooth texture of the smoke. Nicotine is probably medium or a little higher, so although not a strong blend it is satiating. It can be an all-day smoke if one likes the flavour. One drawback I could mention is that it burns a little quick.

There are a few of the new crop of Dunhill blends that I like as much as I always have. This isn't one of them. Leaving aside the question of new vs. old, the present day Elizabethan I find flat, uninspired, and uninspiring. There are far too many VaPers that are leagues better than this for me bother with it any more.

Too bad...

I loaded the pipe straight from the tin, it may have been a bit moist. It lit and burned well, although I had to relight about every 1/3 bowl. It probably would have burned better if I had dried it some before packing the pipe. The tin note was mild, slightly fruity plum? It was a very mild smoke. A bit of the Perique spice peeked out at about the half way point. Overall, nothing overwhelming, just a solid tobacco smoke.

Tried this again in a vintage "Flying Disc" briar pipe. The tobacco was a bit drier and smoked all the way to the bottom with no relights. The experience was similar, muted creamy vanilla/fruit sweetness with a touch of Perique spice. Still not a favorite for me. Peter Stokkeby Luxury Flake was similar although a bit more harsh. I would smoke Elizabethan Mixture before the Luxury Flake, but would prefer a more aromatic tobacco myself.

Brand new tin ordered a ill while ago, i have been stuck on Dunhill's EMP for a while so I figured it was time to branch out. The tin is obviously awesome, no question about class there. The aroma in the tin was much milder than anticipated. It was a tad moist so I let it breathe. After a couple days I haven't detected much complexity, it's a good and honest blend that delivers a very cool smoke. I had no tounge bit, my pipe didn't even get that hot. I started tasting the... "spicy" kinda smokey flavor of the Perique consistently towards mid bowl during each smoke. In sum, it's a mellow smoke, it's not as sharp as EMP, but I have found that this mixture is a very good morning mixture as well. Highly recommend!

There are a number of excellent VaPers on the market and I have a half-dozen in my rotation. I find myself coming back to Elizabethan most often. It sits at the top because it is consistently good and delivers a low maintenance, satisfying experience. That’s important when averaging only 3-5 bowls per week. Elizabethan has the prized “aged” Virginia characteristic, which is enhanced to perfection with the deep fruit and figgy Perique. It is so well balanced and delivers the aged, slightly sweet, deep fruit and bread flavors and aromas. All of that is wrapped nicely in a pure tobacco flavor. Many tobaccos hit the palate and the initial impression is good but then they progressively get offsides because they’re usually too sweet or too earthy. Elizabethan sits in the sweet spot. If you are trying Elizabethan for the first time, crack the tin, smell the tobacco, smoke a bowl and make mental notes. Then immediately jar it up and don’t revisit for 6-9 months. The difference in the tin note and the smoke will be markedly different, in my experience.
