Peterson Elizabethan Mixture

(3.04)
Notes: Elizabethan Mixture was launched by Dunhill and made in London until production was transferred to sister company Murray and Sons in 1981. It was made in Belfast until new owners BAT closed the Murray factory in 2005. Dunhill's Elizabethan combines pressed, darkened Virginias with a dose of perique (all ribbon-cut) to create an easy-to-enjoy blend with a tangy character and a bit of pepper spice. Elizabethan has been made since its 2013 reintroduction by STG after being unavailable since 2005, firstly under the Dunhill brand and now as a Peterson product after Dunhill withdrew their brand from the pipe tobacco market.

A blast from the past!

First time I smoked it was back in 2017-2018, and what I remember was that it had enough vitamin N and that it was quite spicy for me, but nonetheless, pleasant. Other than that I don’t remember much, so right now I’m going to make a review for a tin from 2016.

The tin note wasn’t very strong when I opened the tin. It was quite sweet actually, smelled very good. After I placed the tobacco from the tin to the jar, it bloomed. There are some fruity notes, sweet notes but also some spicy notes but not very pronounced. Very pleasant and natural smell.

The tobacco presents itself with some dark yellow, brown and few black leaves. Mine also happens to have some sugar crystals, which is great. 🙂 Quality tobacco, and the cut is of course, the Dunhill cut! Perfect ribbon.

The tobacco is just a little moist. Since I’m not the type who leaves the tin open for the tobacco to dry, I just pick the amount I need to fill my pipe and leave it to dry. In Elizabethan’s case, I had to leave it about 5 to 10 minutes to dry.

Lights up super easy and burns excellent.

The room note is that of a good, natural virginia. Very pleasant smell. Wonderful, actually!

When I smoked the first two bowls the perique wasn’t very present, only after half of the bowl. But after the first two bowls, for some reason, the perique could be detected right from the first match (or from the false light).

Good, well balanced between the sweetness of the virginia and the spiciness of the perique. For me, it’s the perfect level of spiciness I think I can handle from perique (not a great fan of VaPers). Quality tobacco for sure! The virginia is sweet enough to compete with the spiciness of the perique (it could be different with a fresh tin though. since this one is 4 years old, the sweetness of the virginia could’ve developed in time). However, there are hay and grass notes in there and even some fruity notes. So the virginia and the perique dance together beautifully in this blend. Doesn’t change its taste, very easy to smoke, very pleasant. Retrohaling is very pleasant, you can feel the spiciness of the perique, but it’s not like you just sniffed black pepper. 🙂

Delivers a thick smoke, doesn’t bite, doesn’t get too hot, and I really recommend you smoke this one easily, because it gives much better taste and pleasure. This is a tobacco that should be sipped like a good wine. Puff gently and you’ll be rewarded. 🙂

Leaves a perfect white ash. Might be too strong in nicotine for some. The nicotine part is perfect for me. Also leaves a good aftertaste in your mouth, natural tobacco taste with some peppery notes.

Goes great with a cold beer, but I like to drink it in the summer with an icecream frappe. But I think that any cold drink would go great with this blend.

It’s an amazing experience, finding the same taste that I’ve first experienced back in 2017-2018 when I first smoked Elizabethan. It was a jump back in time. It’s the same, wonderful tobacco.

A much loved VaPer blend by many, and for good reason. In short, this EM is rich, more complex, and smoother than many other VaPers on the market. Though the darker Virginias seem to drive the bus, the brighter ribbons are evident, with a citrusy note always in the background. With that said, the flavor does fluctuate throughout the bowl. Sometimes its primarily dark fruit notes, at other times, it is a fairly even mix.

This isnt a heavy Perique blend either. It's certainly evident but it stays in the backseat. As with the other Dunhill/Peterson blends, the quality is there. If I had to compare this with another blend, Rattray's Marlin Flake comes to mind. Both have similar component percentages. 8/10

The first time I smoked this blend was right after I came off of a strong latakia binge for about a year and I thought it tasted like cigarettes, so I jarred it up to be re-visited at a later time. Eventually on I realized that strong latakia binge had compromised my taste buds and it took a little while to get my taste back for something that wasn't latakia based. I finally got back around to this about a year later. I popped open the jar and a fruity, figgy, slightly hay-like smell hit me. To be honest, it smelled delicious and I could hardly wait to pack a bowl and get to smoking. It took a few lights initially, but after a good light and tamp it practically smoked itself. It turned out to be a beautiful, cool smoke, tasty with that delicious figgy, slightly peppery and hay-like taste all the way to the end. This is a regular smoke for me now. It's a nice hearty, uncomplicated, easily smokeable tobacco... no it doesn't have a lot of complexity and its not multi-faceted, but it is dependable. I get the same great smoke every time, regardless of the pipe. I also enjoy the relaxing, medium nic-hit that I get from it, the key to enjoying this tobacco is to not overthink it. I give this blend 4 stars.

I'll say the same thing here that I said about Nightcap - Dunhill knows how to make a great BLEND in the literal sense of the word. The taste of the smoke has a certain uniformity to it, rather than tasting individual components of the blend - and this is a good thing in my book. This also means that the flavor is more consistent from one bowl to the next.

Good in a cob or in a briar, in my experience it has been ready to smoke right from the tin - no drying time required. Packs easy, lights easy. It burns a little on the fast side of things though, so I prefer to smoke this in a larger chambered pipe, like my Bones fat author, a Peterson 68, or a MM Country Gentleman.

In my opinion, Elizabethan has the perfect amount of perique - here it is a condiment rather than the star of the show. There's a certain pepperiness to the smoke, but thankfully it's never overpowering.

I'm not a VaPer lover, but I am an Elizabethan lover. If Dunhill blends ever go away for good, this is probably the blend that I will miss the most.

This will be one I will miss once it gone. Want to get one or two more sleeves before it gone for good. A English friend taught me how to reall6 enjoy this blend. First pop a tin and jar it for several weeks. Because of the cut pack a little tighter than usual. Then light and smoke very slow. Slower the better. Be careful because the nicotine can sneak up on you. Wonderful taste of hay, sweet, spicy. Enjoy!

Brand new tin ordered a ill while ago, i have been stuck on Dunhill's EMP for a while so I figured it was time to branch out. The tin is obviously awesome, no question about class there. The aroma in the tin was much milder than anticipated. It was a tad moist so I let it breathe. After a couple days I haven't detected much complexity, it's a good and honest blend that delivers a very cool smoke. I had no tounge bit, my pipe didn't even get that hot. I started tasting the... "spicy" kinda smokey flavor of the Perique consistently towards mid bowl during each smoke. In sum, it's a mellow smoke, it's not as sharp as EMP, but I have found that this mixture is a very good morning mixture as well. Highly recommend!

There are a number of excellent VaPers on the market and I have a half-dozen in my rotation. I find myself coming back to Elizabethan most often. It sits at the top because it is consistently good and delivers a low maintenance, satisfying experience. That’s important when averaging only 3-5 bowls per week. Elizabethan has the prized “aged” Virginia characteristic, which is enhanced to perfection with the deep fruit and figgy Perique. It is so well balanced and delivers the aged, slightly sweet, deep fruit and bread flavors and aromas. All of that is wrapped nicely in a pure tobacco flavor. Many tobaccos hit the palate and the initial impression is good but then they progressively get offsides because they’re usually too sweet or too earthy. Elizabethan sits in the sweet spot. If you are trying Elizabethan for the first time, crack the tin, smell the tobacco, smoke a bowl and make mental notes. Then immediately jar it up and don’t revisit for 6-9 months. The difference in the tin note and the smoke will be markedly different, in my experience.

Revised 7/3/23: Since my original review of Elizabethan I've chosen two other tobaccos as my top favorites: Peterson 965 and Nightcap. I still consider Elizabethan excellent, though it is not the one I prefer most days.

Original review...

My favorite pipe tobacco overall. Very pleasant Virginia-Perique (VaPer) with spiciness and overall good smoking qualities. The flavor is a bit strong, so I need to enjoy it regularly among several other tobaccos in a rotation, but when I'm in the mood for it, it's great. If I could only have one tobacco blend, it would be Peterson's Elizabethan.

The strong element is mostly its spiciness, which I initially interpreted as tongue bite, but it's really just part of the flavor.

Technique notes: My smoking technique is to focus only on smoking. No reading or work or other distractions. Just enjoying the smoke. Outdoors only. A few bowls per week of pipe smoking. Lightly charring the tobacco initially and with relights. Sipping. Occasional retrohale. Peterson pipe lighter with smallest practical flame. Sometimes a BIC EZ Reach lighter.

Am using a variant of the Frank method to pack a 2/3 full pipe without first putting loose tobacco in the bowl. I just take a wad of tobacco and press it into place Frank-style. Tobacco is stored in OXO POP container with size 60 Boveda 72% pack.

Savinelli 207 smooth is my favorite pipe and favorite pipe design.

Peterson (ex Dunhill) Elizabethan Mixture is a very fine easy smoking Virginia tobacco with "Louisiana Perique" tang. "A rich flavored blend of fine and dark Virginia tobaccos with a touch of Louisiana Perique for added zest " appears to be an accurate tin description. I smoke it in a Charatan's Make "Special" 3 Pot ..thick walled not too deep. Try it in on a winters afternoon in the sun listening to Cate Bush and the birds in the trees , followed by a crisp cold Belgium beer .. you will be pleased. Good medium to strong nicotine hit.

This one took me a while to try. I finally got around to it when Peterson took over.

It's very well-balanced. The Perique brings dark dried fruit, pepper, and earth, with the Virginia’s adding some citrus, grass, and hay notes. The body is nice, and it burns great. Very consistent every visit.
